MeeGo 1.0 demoed on MSI netbook, looks shockingly stupendous (video)
You've already watched pre-release versions of MeeGo fly around on a number of netbooks, but if you're still wondering if it's worth your while to install v1.0 on your own machine, you owe it to yourself to have a look at the video posted after the break. The fine folks over at Liliputing have installed the fresh-out-of-the-lab operating system onto their MSI netbook in order to showcase some of the features, and frankly, we're duly impressed by what we're seeing. It's clearly light on its feet, with an Expose-like shifting of screens happening at speeds which we previously only dreamed of seeing on an Atom-based rig. We can't say the rest of the world is really ready to ditch Windows 7 for something as niche as this, but judging by this vid, you should probably give it a whirl. What's to lose, right?
P.S. - Phoronix was able to run the new OS through the benchmark gauntlet, and it certainly showed up Ubuntu.
[Thanks, Rafael]
See more video at our hub!

That was running of a flash drive?!? Amazing.
I want this on my phone!
@Commander Data
i know, i WANT!!!!
but i doubt it is supports a lot of software :(
any news on office?
does it work on this??
if so i might DB it...
@Commander Data You can pretty much any version of Linux from a flash drive, including Ubuntu, which is way better than MeeGo.
@HoldenMccrotch
mee go supports all linux software if its spun the right way. So open office all main browsers gimp video editors etc.
:) enjoy!
@Commander Data
Nah...Jolicloud is way better judging from what I've seen so far. The only problem I see is that this should improve fairly rapidly because it has a large development team behind it with loads of cash and Jolicloud doesn't.
@Mike Cerm
Why is Ubuntu better than MeeGo?
@JFH As an Ubuntu user thinking of installing Meego, I wondered about this myself. For now, I plan to dual boot both Meego and Ubuntu. But there seems to be a difference... Ubuntu is more community-oriented in that users and developers seem to be more influence over each other and you can get help on almost anything on Ubuntu's great forum (I mean any question can be answered). Meego seems to be lead by more corporate will. That's just my impression.
@Commander Data Moblin was always about a bajillion times faster than Ubuntu. It just had worse hardware support and that horrible integrated browser. Which has thankfully been replaced with the webkit based Chromium here. And they seem to have improved hardware support for netbooks somewhat and added a couple new visual effects.
@tekdemon
I think MeeGo can only survive in the niche since Android (eg 2.2) and Windows (eg 7) dominate the opposing fields of personal computers.
So in a sense, it is computing with Ubuntu. Ubuntu is much more mature, has many advantages and supports a range of devices (from your PS3 to your Touch Pro2).
And I think if Ubuntu actually joined the MeeGo bandwagon (Meetu?) they could have a really impressive OS. In addition, combining the economical power of MeeGo, with the already dominant (in the niche) user base of Ubuntu, such a move (Meetu?) would really attract many developers.
... ... you know the rest (when the supply is high, and you've got a brilliant invention, you can dominate the field like a tsunami).
@HoldenMccrotch
or office live and google docs.. cloud computing works since it comes with chrome.. access office live using the "internet explorer" extension..
i'm downloading this now
@JFH It's not. Ubuntu sucks, with that brown-orange user interface. The new black pink doesn't help too much either.
(just trolling a little bit).
Second
meego download this.
@Aggot
lol
@Aggot Hulk like puny operating system.
@Proverb Indeed, will be interesting to see how Chrome OS compares.
@Proverb I just got the joke lol...Hulk slow...
@Aggot I hope you like it aMeego!
@Aggot
have you tried jolicloud?
how do you think they'd compare?
I stuck in on a usb stick to try it out with my netbook (sammy n210) this morning. I couldn't get it to place nice with my university's wifi network (but worked fine on an unencrypted one) but other than that it was pretty slick and very fast. Its a shame about the one issue it has but as soon as I leave halls I will be duel booting. And yes, it does somewhat show up ubuntu.
@coley501 corrections: 'stuck it on' and 'play nice' not 'place nice'
@coley501
DUAL boot.....
COOL! I'm downloading this right now, but honestly, they are gunna have a hard time pulling me away from W7.
It runs all the WXP applications and networks easily w/ my other Windows boxes and Windows Home Server.
Hmm....
@Ducman69
I don't see this as a debate between the two OS's. Rather, each has it's own purpose. For just browsing the web and performing basic tasks this looks really solid. For anything more than that you can always boot up into Windows.
@bjsguess
true, this seemed nice and smooth at what it does, and is probably great for mobile devices (laptops/netbooks)
i love the little logos though :)
@bjsguess Good point, could dual boot.
But then on my little SSD I have the space of two OSs, and W7 still start up damn fast on netbooks since it has so little hardware to detect.
@bjsguess For me, it's not a case of choosing between the two operating systems but having them both on a system. MeeGo is perfect for just a quick light boot when you want to do something simple quickly but if you want to jump into Windows quickly then you can switch to it. Ideally I'd love to see a button in each OS to switch between them; maybe hibernating and then change boot priority to other OS then reboot and vice versa.
@Ducman69
Not as fast as UNR... And, at the end of the day, Lubuntu is really the best choice over many of these, assuming it gets a stable build soon. In my experience, Lubuntu took no time at all for a working desktop from the login screen. That is what a user should expect. And, while eye-candy is extraordinarily low, that will change with the product's polish gains over time.
Very impressive.
@bjsguess impressive in a sense... but this is really wasting a x86 processor. Simple tasks like these ought to be done on smartbooks where RISC gets its name.
Would love to give this a whirl on my Nexus, virtualbox anyone? xD
@geniusdog254
setting it up in VB right now.
I've used Moblin since December on a flash drive. Not much different from this, especially the animations. Great quick booting and useful OS.
@pwnstr I highly suspect the netbook MeeGo is mostly based on Moblin, while the smartphone MeeGo is mostly based on Maemo.
Perfect for my eee 1101ha well done Intel and Nokia. I'd love to see how MeGo on devices turn out.
@Gutsy Gibbons
Yup. I look forward to high end Nokia phones with this on it. Possibly slates as well.
Good start, but UI definitely needs some tweaking.
Interested in seeing how this improves over time.
Might run this on my MacBook with a VM for a laugh.
Woah, I like this!!! It's crazy fast and fun-looking. I'm going to install it on my netbook this weekend. Good job Nokia-Intel
Can I use this on a Nettop?
I saw this announcement on the RSS feed and found the Meego home page (http://meego.com) However, when you read all the stuff on the homepage the authors seem to have forgotten to provide two vital pieces of information, that almost every visitor will ask:
- what is this meego thing?
- why would I want it?
From the first paragraph it sounds like it's some sort of application developers environment. Then later on, the text refers to "... the meego operating system ..." After reading the whole page, I'm still none the wiser - though whatever it is seems to run on mobile phones and netbook PCs.
PLEASE! When you develop a new product, or development environment or operating system - or anything else for that matter, PLEASE make the first paragraph on your website read:
"X is a Y which runs on Z and is meant for type of users, who can do A, B or C faster / better / cheaper than before."
We're not mind readers, and unless your website can tell normal people what a product is and why we should want to use it, you've pretty much wasted your time in developing it.
Front page, people. Those are the single most important attributes about a product and must be top, centre of page #1.
It totally showed up Ubuntu? What the &^%$ are you talking about, did you actually look at the tests? Anyways, it's cool that this (read linux) is getting press and it looks interesting, but you can load up any linux distribution on a usb stick, and they're all about that fast - and moblin looks like it has a pretty typical application set for a linux distribution too - banshee for music, google chromium ... This looks more interesting for the interface they've tacked on more than anything, and because if hardware makers optimize the distributions it will kick up the pace of innovation.
hm... it looks surprisingly similar to Chrome OS! Pronounce the lightweight OS war started!!!
This is so cool, So now MeeGo netbooks, MeeGo mobile devices & S^3 phones use Qt. I am guessing loads of apps.
@JFH
Yup. If they can pull this off quickly enough before the iPhone platform has a too wide lead, they can dominate. If you were a developer, wouldn't you want to reach 100x more devices with your app?
Just installed it on an EeePC 901. I'm quite impressed I must say. Even flash works nicely. =)
anyone noticed that "awesome" glare on the screen ?
Its almost a mirror when the screen is black, like when the youtube vid was loading lolz ...
just mentioning .. dont hate me ... peace
Well.. in ubuntu's defense, it comes with a lot more stuff if what he showed is any representation, but that was damn quick.
MeeGo will be the first "big" Linux.
