iPhone OS 4 renamed iOS 4, launching June 21 with 1500 new features
We knew it had to happen eventually -- iPhone OS has been renamed to iOS with the bump to version 4. Some 1500 new features are coming along with the name change, including biggies like multitasking, a unified inbox, app folders, and data detectors. Although Apple is encouraging devs to tweak their apps for the iPhone 4's new Retina Display, iOS4 will also automatically redraw text and controls for existing apps to make them play nice with the new higher pixel density. Bing search integration has also been added to iOS 4 in addition to Google and Yahoo -- Google is still the default, though. The golden master is available to devs today, and Steve says the 100 millionth iOS device -- that's iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad -- will be sold sometime this month. That's a lot of devices! We found out about most of the features of iOS 4 at the SDK event, so check here for the full rundown.
Apple says iOS 4 will arrive for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and the iPod touch on June 21 -- and it'll be free to iPod touch owners for the first time, which is nice. Not all features will be supported across all devices: the first-gen touch is left out entirely, and the 3G won't do multitasking, as we heard at the SDK event. We'll see if there are any other limitations and let you know.
Amusingly, an iOS trademark is currently owned by Cisco -- just like the original iPhone trademark -- so we'll see if Apple's lawyers actually called ahead this time around or if they'll have to fake-tussle and make nice again.

Gotta say, it makes sense, its not just on the iPhone anymore.
Developing comment...
@iPhoneKiller21 wow nice man.
@iPhoneKiller21 +1 Internets for you.
Sounds stupid.
@Apple Google Microsoft Not as stupid as you
@Apple Google Microsoft
Almost sounds as stupid as Android and Froyo. ...almost but not quite.
awesomeeeee
@appleipad What the F* is so awesoooooomeeeee about the name change?! o_O
@loocas
i think its the fact that the iphone os is finally up to scratch with the competition :)
@HoldenMccrotch ... i dont know if id say all that but its getting there to say the least
They should've kept the name.
@patrickgs why? It's not just an OS for the iPhone anymore. This may even hint at future uses for the OS on even other products. The iPhone OS is growing up.
Knew it wouldn't be on the pole! Don't like the new name though.
where's Cisco's lawyers ?
@alext
Well, unless this will be put inside Cisco routers too. /s
@alext nonetheless, iOS is already taken, so apple fail.
@alext Damn, Apple keeps accidentally stepping on Cisco's names.
@N900 "Damn, Apple keeps accidentally stepping on Cisco's names."
Sorry, but that is not accidentally, that is oblivious to other's intellectual property... Hypocrisy thy name is Apple.
Heh, you guys did a great job of making yourselves look incredibly stupid.

Too quick to criticise, did not even bother to find out the truth before making stupid accusations.
Some of which aren't even already in other operating systems.
Yep, I think Cisco has something to say about....
@Kohai
Well not really the Cisco has IOS and Apple has the iOS. Although confusion is guaranteed !!
@Sor1
Confusion is not guaranteed, it's illegal. That's what "Trademark" means. You'd think one of these "geniuses" at apple would know how to do a trademark search, and actually buy the rights to something before announcing it to millions, and then have to scramble before they get slapped silly with lawsuits.
@Sor1
So in your opinion if I call an application APPle (something that could stand for APPlication for Loving Encounters) I will have no problem at all.....just because I use 3 upper case letters and two low ones...
Don´t think so.
Oh God, when will be the day that that i will be working with another network engineer and i will ask "What ios is running??"and he/she will reply "four". I predict an outbreak of violence in our field.
@Sor1 agreed. pretty sure somebody at work will get punched as soon as i walk in.
Eye Oh Ess... that's too bad.
1. Multi tasking
2. Folders
what are the other 1498 upgrades to the OS?
@Xing
background images!!!!!!
@Xing
All those features and still no flash.
Lolz.
@Xing No kidding. Can we finally customize the SMS/MMS tone without jailbreaking? There are many simple things like that the readers would love to know about.
@Xing
this so called "1500 new features" start with 1. Multi tasking 2. Folders and 3. ....wait...weren't these features included in many smartphone for years already? come on, apple!? give people something real.
when can we download this?
Wow, the new iPhone will be running an ancient version of Cisco's IOS???
It's not 1500 new features. It's 1500 API's for developers. VERY different things.
@Juggernaut408
I am a very happy with my 3GS and was waiting all week to see what Jobs INC had in store for me, and I agree with you on being not impressed. The leap from 3GS to Iphone4 is not enough for me to get excited. What a shame, well maybe I will go back to Sprint and give the EVO a look.
I'm waiting to see what Cisco says about this.
iPod...interestingly cool name.
iPhone...Rolls off the tongue and makes sense; good name.
iMac...sounds better than eMac.
iPad...we laughed when we heard it, but now we are over it.
iAd....Meh; could be worse.
iOS....Alright, come on, really? What really is the benefit of this? I know they are expanding it across more platforms than the phone, but this doesn't even sound good or look appealing when I read it. Why iApple, why??
Awesome, so now iOS is as feature-rich as WebOS was on June 6, 2009. Thanks for all your continued 'innovation', Apple!
@Zer0fluX
You mean WhatOS right?
So what will ipad os will called? iMaxi OS?
As a long time Cisco certified professional, I've been using cisco and their cisco IOS for over 15 years and I see this name change not only unnecessary but another useless attempt at rebranding industry's well known brands and risking going into another unnecessary ligitation. Steve Jobs, you don't own every brand that starts with "i", except the iAmAMoron brand, which belongs certainly exclusively to you. This name change plus the 1500 new 'features' like multitasking, unified mailbox which have been in the industry for years are examples of Apple's true talent for making a big fuss about small stuff. They would be great politicians.
It's 1500 new APIs and 100 new features, not 1500 new features.
I know Apple's insane, but not that much.
Yet.
@jupigare Where can i get a list of the full 100 new features? Everywhere seems to be just mentioning the biggies like multitasking.
I hope they spoke with Cisco before choosing the name iOS
@Locust Its Apple. They don't need to talk to anyone. They will just launch a fleet of lawyers at you to make you go blind with paperwork until you give them whatever they hell they want. APPLE BEEEECH!!
Yah I thought that was BS myself too.
Considering Cisco has owned and still uses IOS (It's the OS for all of their routers, application boxes, etc.) I think they might not give this one up quite so easily.

So presumably the smart scaling of text & UI elements will come to the iPad too, when it gets iOS4...nice
Not having watched the video yet...
Did he pronounce it "eye oh ess"? Or "eye-oss" as in the word "ion"?
