About Time, Chrome much better than Safari !
@techlord Agreed! MUCH BETTER!
Sent using my Chrome Browser.
@techlord
I can't believe IE still has 52% market share. People need to open their eyes.
@techlord Safari had the advantage of being preloaded on Macs. Once Chrome Os is released they may move even further in front of safari. I still prefer Opera and Firefox myself but chrome has it's benefits.
@oproski
This 52% figure comes from the gigantic number of PC's in companies, hospitals, offices, universities and businesses nationwide, whose users don't have administrator privileges to install new software.
Home users with IE most probably don't know what the word "browser" means, and freak out when they see a menu after hitting the right mouse button by mistake.
@techlord
Just wondering, why do you guys like Chrome over Safari?
On my PC, Safari seems very bloated and substantially more bloated than Chrome, but on my Mac both seem to run pretty much identically.
@Edobe I came to say the same thing about the preload with Apple, good point on what should happen when the Chrome OS starts getting put on comps
@oproski
Cause every windows has IE duh !
@Aaquibn I don't know about the PC, but Safari is faster on the Mac. Uses a lot less memory too.
Chrome has each tab as a separate process. That uses up a lot of memory and cpu time.
@oproski
I think IE is going to hit a comeback in IE9 though, as the multitouch input and what not has been greatly improved, and the java and html5 (I know, yuk) performance in benchmarks I read seemed to be really promising.
I think its all a matter of competition improving the breed.
MS drags ass until they see someone catching up, then they finally invest some R&D and put out a good product.
@techlord Safari Is great (and better than) chrome for Mac, buy chrome is great (and better than) safari on pc, chrome is quite literally pc version of safari except for the new HTML 5 improvements in safari
@techlord
i wonder what the press release is going to be like when apple decides to spin this news. maybe something like the press release about android market share jumping ahead of iphone market share in the US.
@oproski IE has market share because
It comes with windows, and is default, a lot of idiots don't know you can get others, and some business users might not be able to install anything on work computers, and there's a few people that actually believe it's better
@techlord If you look at the share. Safari's share is in line with Mac share I'm the US and internationally. Doubt anyone runs Safari on a PC. It has by far the most issues on PC
Chrome does.
@That guy 2
Same with osx both in desktop and mobile versions so whats your point? At least u can uninstall it with windows and windows mobile.
@techlord
Maybe on Windows. Ever since Safari 5, I haven't touched Chrome. The incessant crashing reminded me that Chrome is still in Beta.
Safari 5 is just awesome, everything's faster and the search is vastly improved from 4. The only thing I miss are Chromes very decent themes. Firefox themes are horrific, but the Chrome ones are curated.
Woah, curated content... what a concept, Google... *looks at the Android marketplace.
@techlord
Chrome is definitely FASTER than Safari but until they get the same UI like Safari I think I'll stick with Safari.
I love Top Sites. I like the presentation in Safari. And I like having a separate search bar in my browser.
But I won't deny that Chrome is really drop dead fast.
I hope the day comes when Firefox is faster than either 2 though. I'll switch back in a heartbeat....
@techlord safari is pretty weak in PC, whoever use safari in PC something is wrong with them. Apple put alot of effort in MAC safari but not in PC. So if you owned a PC, go chrome.. WAY WAY faster than firefox, IE, safari in PC. But beware it's very resource hogs. Price to pay for being too fast.
@That guy 2 I don't understand that comment? Are you saying that Safari makes better use of HTML5 than Chrome does?
@1mc Well, I have to be honest and say I don't have any browser preference whatsoever. My main operating system is OSX, but I also use Vista (don't shoot me for not upgrading to Win 7) plus Linux. You can say I use all types of browsers, because throughout my OS's, I'm regularly changing the default browser. I like reading about a new update/upgrade to a browser, then using that for a couple of months. Only on my Linux machine do I only have a single browser.
Right now I'm using Safari 5 on my Macs (my preferred OS), and have been since its release. Are there better/faster browsers? Maybe, but you can't fnck around with a browser for an hour and form a proper opinion. So, I'll use Safari for a couple of months, maybe less. Maybe Chrome will move back to my default browser after reading this article.
Most importantly, at the end of the day, I really don't give a crap which browser I use. I get used to the flavor of the moment.
@techlord
I LOVE Chrome, and how lazy it's made me! :o)
@techlord
Yeah, that's great. I hope this wakes up Mozilla since Firefox has been receiving quite average updates. They need to do something great, AGAIN.
@oproski These are probably the people still running IE6. They're not using it out of choice. It's out of laziness. Either they aren't comfortable enough with computers to install software by themselves (and just use what's there), or they're in a corporate environment where their ability to install or update software has been taken away and the IT department is too scared to do mass browser updates across the enterprise, so they just leave it alone.
@StareClipscom It's not laziness. There are a lot of companies out there that cannot upgrade IE6 because their enterprise software doesn't support IE7 or IE8. IT departments are stuck on IE6 because the software developer isn't providing an update, or the update is a cost that the beancounters won't spend money on, since it doesn't do anything to the bottom line. And even if they did update to IE8, they couldn't get tech support from the software developer because they said that it's not their problem. IT departments would love to move off IE6 because of security issues, but their hands are tied until the enterprise software is updated.
@jaffreywali I did to try it out.
What a piece of shit.
Then I had a chance to try it on my Brother's mac. Still a piece of shit. He uses Chrome.
@techlord
Engadget should do a poll I'd be interested in seeing what browsers engadget users are using u guys should attach a poll to this
@techlord
IE is only in first because lazy asses just use what was packaged with the system
firefox and chrome the only real browsers to me
@oproski For those of you bashing IE, some of us tech people still use IE because it is the battle-front. Experience has shown that none of your so-called safe browsers are safe afterall, they are all just as vulnerable with enough attention given to it by hackers. Security by obscurity is not some of us want. So yes, I intentionally use IE, and I can teach a lot you advanced computer tech, so don't call me stupid.
@Aaquibn
Extensions, Themes, Open-Source
A browser which has enlarging compatibilities is often liked by the public.
Also It's from Google and they advertise it so it has some unrealised effect on your choice.
@Greg7388
Each tab as a seperate process is a benefit...
Anyway, you can add a command line option to have it only use one process
@techlord
The speediness of Chrome is definitely noticeable on Windows (over IE, FF, & Safari) and Linux (over FF). On my wife's Macbook Pro though, she uses FF and I use Chrome...very little difference in speed.
Chrome is better because it's not an Apple product. Yeah, c'mon guys let's high five each other and show the fruits what we're made of. Of course both browsers run on the same rendering engine so the end user won't see much difference at all and Apple won't care much as it makes webkit more popular but still Chrome wins.
@techlord
I'd agree that Chrome is great for Windows (I use it at home but it's banned at work due to security fears - go figure) but Safari is the better browser for the Mac. Chrome seems a better browser on the Mac than Firefox but it's just not a Mac application. This is what I dislike about most cross platform applications - they just don't feel right.
@techlord
We haven't heard much on the browser war much lately, what with all the other Apple vs. Google news out there. I have Chrome, IE, Firefox, Opera, and Safari all downloaded on my computer just so I can show people what a browser is--the older generation is a bit slow on the uptake of tech (which will probably save them somehow)--anyway, out of all of them, I am hands down a Chrome user. It's clean, fast, functional, personalizable, and imo pretty. Not to mention the ongoing march of open source updates :)
@Greg7388
I have also found that safari runs slightly better on a mac than any other browser, but on PC I can't stand it
@oproski
Its because all of the businesses in america use the supposedly most secure browser and the on that comes with most of their computers.
Ya know, Chrome has gotten buggier since its initial release.. it doesn't load up Javascript as well at it used too.
@eddieexe I think it's gotten better with Flash content in the past week thanks to the inclusion of the plug-in (err...build-in?). I can't be sure because I made some other changes to my comp just the day before, but I don't think my 1.8ghz processor laptop with an x300(? forgive me, I hate the thing and didn't buy it, happened to be given it a year ago) should be able to render the 720p & 1080p youtubes, but it has.
@eddieexe
I agree.. The first couple releases were really nice and fast but the latest builds have dissapointed me. Still better than Safari though
@eddieexe
I have been getting a ton of errors in chrome for PC. Although the only time the errors occur is when I log into or out of logmein while video is playing. Strange but it just started happening.
Now bring chrome to android !
@techlord Chrome is almost there in Android. With Froyo (2.2), Google has used V8 JavaScript engine which they use in Chrome.
google FTW
Don't.Be.Evil.
stopped using chrome after it had trouble playing youtube videos
@tehslax They just included the flash plug-in within the browser last week, give her another shot.
How surprising.
The time of a Google dominated world creeps ever closer and I'm not sure whether to be terrified or happy . .
@GetInMyBelly
As long as Android doesnt become an actual android then I think we can avoid any skynet type things
