Latest EVO 4G update is back online, presumably won't brick your phone this time
That didn't take too long, did it? That pulled EVO 4G update promising a handful of fixes for WiFi, Exchange, and battery life (no Froyo yet, sorry) is back online according to our contacts at Sprint -- and indeed, we're getting prompted on our own unit, so that's that. Go forth, readers; get your update on, now with less brick than ever before.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: To be clear, you don't need to apply this update if you already have done so successfully -- the only change that we're aware of here is that attempting to apply the update multiple times won't kill the phone.

Froyo plz
@cjheechul Good luck to all!
@Ninetysix Sprint rep said froyo by august 5 at the latest, crossing my fingers!
@psych2l
That would be cool - but if you asked 12 different sprint reps you'll get 12 different answers.
@cjheechul
Root and be happy
@cjheechul
Dont be mad iphonez peeps cause HTC is on top of shit!! HTC got thissss....its on lockdown!!
@cjheechul In for 2!
@cjheechul Doesn't need froyo. the user experience is iphone quality without all the lockdown :)
@Seven2k
Really? Google releases an update that bricks the phone and iPhone users are supposed to be jealous of that? Wow. Oh yeah, HTC is "on top of that". Sure.
@Jack First you say Google is responsible, then you say HTC is. Make up your mind, or do you even know who made this update at all?
@cjheechul I'm done with the EVO, I'm going to return mine today. I just found out that it is a 16 bit display with just 65536 color palette. In this day and age !!!!
Web pages with gradient background and images always looked bad on EVO and I thought it was a software issue.
I noticed this when I was comparing youtube-HQ on EVO and my friend's iPhone 4. The quality on EVO was crap compared to that on iPhone. I magnified and found that there was significant banding on all the images on EVO. Then I opened some color-pattern/palette images and found that they were horribly banded. I searched for specs online and was really disappointed the LCD on EVO is 16 bit. Motoroloa droid on the other hand has a 24 bit LCD.
No amount of software upgrades can solve this problem.
I have been defending and lauding the EVO on so many discussions but with this stunt HTC has really disappointed me.
@Jack lease google can actually fix the phones problems unlike apple.... this is their way of fixing it YOUR HOLD IT THE WRONG WAY..... and the phones arent bricked take out the battery and put it back in
The Qik app was updated as well. Apparently there are other apps that were updated also.
Now just bring froyo already!!!
@4u2nv
It just freaking came out! Many of us are still stuck at 1.5/1.6.
@dardub
Couldn't agree more. Even a 2.1 update would make my day at this point.
The number of bars on that thing is astounding.
@who said what Yeah the 1 bar is 1 more than an iPhone 4.
@Jordus
let's be real here. THe whole iphone signal thing is fun to make a jab at apple for all those who hate apple for whatever reason. But you don't see ACTUAL IPHONE owners complaining about it around here. Anybody bitching or complaining about it clearly does not and would not own one. The sales speak for themselves - this is a non-issue.
@Jordus
Stop dreaming/having nightmares (whichever is the case) about iPhone 24/7!
@TomSawyer
It's called shame. That's why.
@TomSawyer
the sales say people are apple zombies & apple has good marketing not that the phone doesn't have issues. Even apple is says it has issues. Don't try to deny it, just say the truth, that you will buy an iphone no matter the issue
@TomSawyer Swings and roundabouts.
@TomSawyer The sales speak for themselves? Are you on crack? iPhone sales are based almost solely on popularity! If Apple had reverted back to the specs of iPhone 1 but had redesigned it look like iPhone 4, you think they would have sold any less iPhones?! The sales don't justify its ridiculous antenna hardware design. It doesn't justify it's failing proximity sensor. Sales don't justify the report I heard this morning on CNN of activated, fully charged, iPhone that won't turn on anymore!
@TomSawyer
Hey man I just got rid of my iPhone to get the EVO and all my computers r mac ( so I luv apple) but the sales doesn't mean its not a issue. The sales means people just don't care. Apple could yell most iPhone user that u could only make 10 calls a day and they would still buy it.
Less be real no matter how shity the data plan keeps gettin people that luv apple will still by the phone (hence the sales) and when the iPhone view to another carrier 30% of these apple haters will get it. I left bcuz I really like the EVO BETTER. the new iPhone looks like a Samsung Instinct hardly revolutionary @ all. The only thing the new one does is very limited WiFi video calln that the 3gs won't do. I am a apple sheep just not for the iPhone. Apple and android both r great.
@Ecoteric
.... You're ridiculous. Not everyone is a lemming. As a matter of fact, most people aren't. And, I see a lot more Android fanboys than Apple fanboys, especially on this website.
@who said what
dont be jealous....we can still do out video chat with one bar then move one inch over to any direction and full bars. On top of that we can use either hand or the kickstand.
Dont hate cause your super duper marvelous iphone has issues. Like i said before Apples shit smells also.
@TomSawyer
TRUTH FOR THE WIN
@Seven2k
Your EVO-Zealotry is absolutely phenominal.
That doesn't just go for him; this entire smartphone verbal warfare is all absolutely ludicrous. Sure; makes for a good joke or several but there are times where commenters just cross the line in a blazing dash for ultimate handheld supremacy only to either give up or realize that your moral high tower is in outer space and you don't have a rocket ship.
Before anyone thinks of saying anything about fanboyism, I've never owned a Mac product; nor have I ever owned anything from HTC.
But I do own a good deal of common sense.
@dswatson83
you people need to finally get over the delusion that anybody with an iPhone is a "fanboy" or "sheep" or "zombie." They're selling far too many macs, ipods, iPhones (and soon, iPads) for every buyer to be a fanboy. The fact is they make products PEOPLE want to buy, not just the die-hards. I exclude iPads because most early iPad adopters are die-hards, but not all. And it's becoming more mainstream every day.
Mine never bricked in the first place. Who is dumb enough to run an update twice?
@Jordus
yeah, i'm with you. Only people I heard of having issues are those who downloaded twice or pulled the battery out midway through the install cause they got impatient.
@dswatson83
Yep it's because people got impatient and pulled their battery or interrupted the process.
On more positive note have you noticed all the extra settings in the camera feature?
@rutter9
What new settings are you seeing? It looks the same to me.
@Jordus The original update was ~21MB, this one is ~30MB. What I wanna know is why did it take an extra 9MB of code to make sure people can't update their devices twice?
@dswatson83
Not all people who got through the update have no issues. I updated fine Monday morning, but I didn't get a pricked phone. Instead, I got a broken vibration for incoming texts (haptic feedback still works on the keyboard), and my Exchange support broke. I used to be able to sync perfectly with my work exchange account, but now I can't even login.
@Jordus @cjheechul I'm done with the EVO, I'm going to return mine today. I just found out that it is a 16 bit display with just 65536 color palette. In this day and age !!!!

no brick here, updated yesterday
If I updated previously without a hitch, then there is no reason to reupdate, correct?
At least its not HTC's fault froyo isn't here, google is still releasing builds and just put the code up a week ago. Even if htc was moving full blast on this and not adding any more features, it would still take them at least a couple weeks.
Engadget does a great job in deceiving its readers with its headlines. The update alone did not brick phones. It's the boneheaded users that tried to to apply the update twice that pricked phones. I agree that the update shouldnt have been able do that, but it's not as if they expected anyone to try to install it again after the first successful installation!
@Ecoteric
SOP for me is to check for updates twice to see if it took.
@Ecoteric
The problem wasn't just "bonehead users installing it twice," the problem was that some people were receiving a "do you want to update" notification even after already updating. A lot of reasonable people would assume that either (a) the first attempt didn't take or (b) the update is incremental (think windows updates having to reboot). 99% of users would have no idea how to check to see if an OTA installed correctly or not.
Luckily, I knew better than to hand over my root access by accepting this (or any) OTA. But if I didn't care about root access and just wanted to update no matter what, I may have fallen victim to this issue as well.
@Ecoteric
Exactly. Its like when that lady sued McDonalds for $1M after she spilt hot coffee in her lap because Mckey D's didn't have a label saying "caution- hot" at the time.
Not exactly the same, but if you are stupid enough to install and update, then go in and install another update without understanding why you deserve to have your phone bricked.
@Bandigolo
"A lot of reasonable people would assume that either (a) the first attempt didn't take or (b) the update is incremental (think windows updates having to reboot)."
Whaahhhh? First of all "ass"uming anything is bad. Also- (a) If it didn't take why do it again? Insanity is doing the same thing twice and expecting different results. (b) If they noticed the update ID, they would see it was the same one.
I think common sense would have worked wonders for these people. Again assuming something- particularly when you are not really knowledgeable about a product- is really not the way to go.
@aarontuyet
I'm going to have to disagree with your reasoning. Every company should know damn well by now that you need to be able to cater to the lowest common denominator of your user base. And offering up an OTA that even so much as has the ability to brick phones is just unacceptable. The only time I would ever blame the consumer for something like this is if the OTA came with a button that said, "Yes, I have read and understand that installing this twice might brick my phone. Please proceed to brick my phone."
@aarontuyet
That story about a woman suing McDonald's over hot coffee is part truth, part old wives tale. Anybody working in the public health/food sector will tell you what really happened... Liquids such as coffee are supposed to be kept within certain temp. ranges to avoid severe scalding, bacteria, etc.. Thus, when you spill correctly maintained McDonald's coffee on your lap, it stings a little, maybe even causes some redness, but overall, the damage is minor. In the case that you, and so many others, cite incorrectly as an example of stupidity, the coffee was not maintained at a reasonable temp. When the lady spilled it, she was severely burned, including permanent scarring. If this happened to you, are you saying you wouldn't take issue. It's no different than a chemical or fire burn.
If you are going to cite such things as argument, please know your facts.
Loving the increased battery life from this new update. Don't need to charge it each day anymore.
Remote installation, remote deletion, remote bricking. Android and its phones are full of shitty problems. Not to mention their looks…
@magadget
what does andriod have to do with this anyway. The update is by HTC dumbass. And the only people that have bricked phones are the ones who installed twice, that doesn't sound like a htc prob to me
