Mongoose Studio's dozen iPod cluster display is an expensive way to watch Tron (video)
Most of us would be happy to get a single video to play on our PMP without having to run it through some sort of transcoder first, but the folks at Mongoose Studio needed something more complex. They've released a video of a project that's been in the works for some time, clustering 12 iPod touches into a sort of bezel-riffic widescreen display. All are controlled by a master, 13th iPod that can cause them to display a clock in the interest of verifying synchronization (which is far from perfect, as you'll see in the embed below), or to trigger the playing of a movie. We're guessing that the footage must be manually split into appropriate files for each device, and we're also guessing that horrible things would happen should someone come along and re-shuffle them. But, if you have a lot of friends with iPhones and a lot of free time to prep the film, this could make for a rather interesting movie night -- until someone gets a call, that is.

Cool
@Cainhunpi
Ya now do that with 12 ipads!!
lol
@itsallnewstuff
The iMat!

Wow, the people that made GLiP should work on this!
(but preferably on an Android hehe)
more bezel than screen
/agreed
@BlackedOut lol :) they should have used an Evo or HD2.
@NextGen
Get out
On screen!
Pointless but kinda awesome.
Can I have one? And by one I mean 14
@That guy 2
Ummm...there's only 12 though.
@SEscobedo
13, if you count the controller
@Cpsheehan Yah I didn't have time to go back to the article to check the number, and yes it's 13, but I already have one, so it would be 12 :)
@ssgadget btw you're stupid
Didn't know ipod touch can receive phone calls
@kof2000
It says if you have a lot of friends with iphones.=)
I usually like these sorts of things, but this is seriously useless and thoroughly unimpressive.
Would be nicer if the iPod/iPhones didn't have so much black space on the front instead of screen. This would be way more watchable on an EVO 4G
Why not 12 pads ?
More Like... A Stupid Way
One of these days I am going to have to that movie preferably on a tv.
@ssgadget
Thats quite an impressive feat, but not impressive enough for it to have its own article. This a significant marker of poor journalism, the kind of thing Apple would pay you to do.
Unless... Engadget is part of something we all cannot quite confirm.
Another slow day at the office again, huh?
Would have looked better with Evos. Oh wait you can just plug that into a hdtv.
@papo81585 yeah :] Though technically it wouldn't look better on the Evo because it has a shitty screen. It would look better on the Samsung Galaxy S [maybe].
@WilliamNighthawk
Um shity screen? I have an ipod touch an iPhone 4 and a evo. The 4 has the best screen as far as resolution but is totally useless on 3.5 in. The evo is my choice bc bigger is always better. Before any one ask I had to get an evo bc I was blown away and an iPhone 4 bc I am a tech nerd always have to have the newest stuff.
@papo81585 3.5 inches is fine, I'm not being an ignorant fanboy and saying that 3.5 is BETTER than 4.3, but 3.5 is enough, theres also the iPad with ios @9.7 in. And the iPad 2 or whatever will be better all around (camera, faster processor, that's probably it, gyroscope? Oh an multitasking obviously coming this fall, so if you want a bigger screen on an iPod touch, you can't complain it has no camera or no multitasking
@papo81585 :] Never said the screen on the iPhone was anygood. I'm neither an Evo or Apple fanboy; I'm not even a Samsung fan.
I'm a super amoled fanboy!!
@WilliamNighthawk
The EVO doesnt have a bad screen. OBVIOUSLY it's not up to the quality of an HDTV, but for a phone it's definitely respectable.
Just... why?
@thisNthat Why not?
@Sp4rky Lots of reasons, but then there's just that one reason TO do it: "why not"
@furquanatique
oh come on, chill out, it's a fun gadget thingie (call it whatever you want), and actually it is pretty impressive.
So if you don't like it, just don't read.
And btw, who are you exactly to judge what deserves an article and what does not ?
Well it worked. Enjoy your .002 cents from my click engadget. I'll never get that 20 seconds back.
That would be really annoying to watch.
Notice how the first two (top left) go out of sync near the end of the video? Bummer... :)
@ssgadget
CHOICE A
12 ipod touches = $2400
CHOICE B
55 inch Sony Bravia LCD = $1500
Blu Ray Player = $300
Very large collection of pr0n movies = $600
Make your choice.... NOW
@ssgadget
Hey Tim, your first sentence seems to be drunk.
@FNG oh yeah, I didn't even realise!
"would be happy to get video to play on a single video to play"
Hey, babe, I like your bezel.
Why not just buy a Big screen tv? 13 iPods = at least $1300 if all were bought at $100 dollars imagine if the iPods cost double then $2600 wasted when you could have gotten a super B.A. TV
@2FR35H You could have an awesome tv for 2,000 yes, (plasma unless it's used or crappy will be at least 2,000 most likely, LCD suuuuuccckkksss) or you could have fun and call your friends and say "hey come over I'm gonna watch transformers on 12 iPod touches you wanna come" or if you got the tv it would just be "hey come over I'm gonna watch transformers you wanna come?" oh btw I meant to say itouches are at least $199, $299 for the good ones, but they will be $199 in September when the new one comes out, so 13x200=2600
@2FR35H And why not just buy a tv? I'm pretty sure no one has this except for these guys and a few rich nerd trillionaires, there isn't a reason to actually buy this instead of a tv that's not the point...the point is that it's cool
maybe engadget should write an article about how stupid and utterly pointless some of their articles are. and why anyone would waste their time money and brainpower (the seemimgly little brainpower mind you) is beyond me.
@scoobydooby11
Actually I find this article at least semi-amusing.
"Pointless" would be articles such as the one written about Apple providing a new box for the 3GS when iOS4 was launched. Earthshattering.
@scoobydooby11 maybe engadget should write an article about how stupid and utterly pointless some of the comments are. and why anyone would waste their time money and brainpower (the seemimgly little brainpower mind you) is beyond me.
@scoobydooby11
No offense, but you did take the time to comment on it.
@higherdestiny It's news, it's not supposed to be the coolest thing in the world, and plus, it's the first article in a few hours so probs not a big amount of news going around, they make these articles just so that you know about these things, not so you can look at them and say "oh I'm gonna buy that (12 iPod touches)" or "wow that is an amazing feature (the box) good job "
@loadoftoad
i choose C
The 12 ipod touches then load pr0n take pic of the ipods playing that "filthy" and educational video and email it to Steve Jobs, with email title "My ipods are getting too hot".
@month
Umm, okay? Care to elaborate?
