EVO 4G's Froyo features detailed in pictures, car dock coming in September?
We're not far from seeing this big update in the flesh, but in the meanwhile, EVO 4G owners (and fans) might be interested to take a closer look at the features they'll be getting once it arrives. HTC appears to have put surprising effort into rendering a lifelike torch for its Flashlight app, while app sharing (seen after the break) is a neat addition -- and don't worry, devs, it only works on items that aren't copy protected. We're also being told that the update has car dock-specific functionality, which will match up with a dock release somewhere around the second week of September. Has everyone decided what dark things they plan on illuminating with their EVO's LED once this thing goes live?

Flashlight app! Yay!
hey guys.. the E V O F T and W keys on my keyboard are wearing out. what shall i do?
@HerbieDerb
Go outside once in a while
@rutter9
You missed the joke.
@rutter9
i do a lot. the EVO's 4.3" TFT screen is usable in direct sunlight : )
still doesnt help my E V O F T W keys though.
@HerbieDerb
+1!
All the great ones in history have had a modesty about their greatness, so type accordingly in the future. (but it is damn hard not to rub it in).
I want my own EVO (jealous of wife). But it is great being a Sprint Premiere customer (new phone every 12 mo., suckers), as my Moment will be replace in January, and by then, even more greatness will have descended down from the Gods of Android.
@HerbieDerb
Really? My Vibrant's is too :)
Technology FTW!
Evo, Vibrant, Nexus One, they are all awesome phones :D
@Mori
HTC bundles a flashlight app? Does that mean Apple are the capitalists, championing the free market, and that android is a big-state communist?
@chaoscentral
im sure it does, but it wont be running Froyo in the sunlight later today : )
HTC EVO FTW!
@Mori
EVO!!! I WANT YOUR BABIES!!!!
@HerbieDerb
EVO!!!!! I WANT YOUR BABIES!!!!
@HerbieDerb I would imagine Isiah Mustafa would have an answer for your worn down keys which likely involves a live barracuda, gold nuggets the size of golf balls, and Scarlett Johansson.
@Dank Dillweed
You get a new phone every 12 months? Sucks to be you. I get a new phone free every year through work (had it all from WMs, BBs, Pre, iP3GS and my current Evo) and don't pay a dime for phone or monthly bill.
@Knarfl1
Some people, like myself, who actually have the fortitude, mind, and nads to do it, employ themselves. I don't have to worry about being laid off, or the perks being cut, etc.
So, it actually sucks to be you.
@Stratus41298
No I saw it, I also have an evo. Thanks.
@HerbieDerb You use Android's ability to type what you speak instead. Works really well. Great when you have to fire off a quick text while at a stop light.
@Mori
Teste
@donatom3
ahhh, yes. thank you for the solution. i will dictate all my responses from my EVO phone. and if i choose to use the awesome swype keyboard on the gorgeous 4.3" TFT display, the virtual keys shouldnt wear out, right?
EVP FRW!!.. oops.. i mean EVO FTW!... dang rubbed out keys!
In the market search LED light to contol your flash-led desire light does morse code flashes with the light, you can put in any words for it to flsh out..
Also on xda you can find a noob guide for full nand unlock root and flash cyanogen 6 which allows froyo hotspot....
@KarlW
You must not understand the free market and why Apple is more like Socialists and Google and HTC are more like Capitalists. A preloaded app has nothing to do with social economies anyway.
As far as the coming features go, I'm glad that HTC is making Android more user friendly like the extra icon options in messaging.
@Mori Welcome to something us iPhone people have already had.
@Dank Dillweed Sell your moment for $150-$175 and buy the EVO for 449.99 now. You are going to pay $199.99 for it in January so the price difference is only $75-$100 assuming you can get that price for your moment and the contract price of the EVO doesn't drop. That's the logic I went with and given the HUGE upgrade the EVO is over the moment I see no flaws to it. I got a Moment in March and an EVO in June.
@BallastatuzX
"I dont care."
@HerbieDerb Individual keys won't, but lines may be worn between the E, V, O, F, T and W keys, which would probably only make it faster and easier to type those keys in the future.
@Purlieu
i think i have a cheap keyboard. it funny how its only the E, V, O, F, T, and W keys though.
hey guys.. i just snuggle the phone with my face. just felt i need to share that with you.
@Dank Dillweed
What's the name of your company?
@donatom3 Don't test and drive.
EVO FTW!
@rhomaion you mean "Dont TEXT and drive"
@The Dark Knight
It was a purely tongue-in-cheek comment. We all know Linux is communism without my sayso.
@HerbieDerb
Hey guys all my friends were trying to put froyo on their evos, so I decided to put it on my Nokia E71. Check it out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/47299486@N07/4845392916
September sounds so far away
@JaZzo I can wait forever. While I have some interest in the EVO now that 2.2 is about ready - there is no way I'll pay twice as much per month to get the evo. I have a free an clear plan which was Sprint's way of rewarding customer loyalty - now they are pissing on "loyal" customers if you want a new phone you have to pay twice as much per month for the same items. I have WM phone that has 3 browsers, 3 emails synced to it, text, is capable of tethering but somehow they think if I want a newer phone I'll use much more service?
@JaZzo
Why September ? Froyo cones out next week. Desire gets it this weekend. And all others soon
@DefPoet He may be like me and waiting for there to be EVOs in stock. I ordered mine last weekend but still have 2-3 weeks before it even ships.
@boe Yeah, how ridiculous of them to require customers to have a plan that they currently offer when they get a new phone. It's so unfair that they won't let everyone keep their $30/month plan that has unlimited data and text. Damn them for letting everyone keep it for years and years. It's ridiculous that they'd ever stop the plan. They should just let people keep it for life.
@DefPoet dude it's the car dock that comes out in sep
@brianse they would be out of business by now if they didn't start to phase those plans out.
@boe I'd recommend going into a Sprint store and talking to them about your plan. They gave me a ridiculous deal when I switched from Verizon a couple years ago, and I was worried about having to pay an extra $30 for buying the EVO. The guys at the store ended up just adding the $10 4G charge to my plan.
Unlimited everything and 4G for $59.99 a month!!!
@grafxguy
Yup, you're correct. We pay about $140 for two Android phones from Sprint.
I kinda balked too, when I upgraded from my WinMo phone, and had to change to a more expensive plan (I had the same deal the other guy had, and was paying $45/month, including the $15 data plan). But now with far more capable phones, I think it's a great deal, compared to other carriers.
And the wife said, "I don't need the internet on my phone". You should see her now, with her EVO. Instantly addicted to her phone now!
Very nice. Can't wait!!!!!!
My screen is about to break considering how much I've been tapping the "Check Now" button on it to get Froyo goodness on this baby! Give me now!
@whySoSerious
Well, that was a lot of work for nothing - I now have a real frowny face. According to Sprint's comment to a poster on Facebook, the manual update won't be today, but Monday the 1rst. Dammit!
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5415208/sprint%20fb%202010-07-30_142701.jpg
(but apparently a Sprint rep on their official forums still claims any minute now...?!?!)
@whySoSerious
The 1st is sunday.. i shall be "check now"ing all the way up til the third if I don't get it
@NemZero
Doh! Good call - Looking at one of those 4 X 3 layout calendars and was on the wrong month.
Damn I wish they'd just get this out - it's gotta be ready, no? I would have been ok waiting if it didn't seem like we had a chance of getting it early! What a Froyo-tease.
As if there weren't enough flashlight apps in the app stores already >_>
@bahoo
Um this one's not whiting out the screen it's using the LED on the back.
@fais:
I think there's a way to do this as well, but nice to have it built in.
@bahoo
how many of those apps require an internet connection?
Il go with built in
@fais
Search for LED Desire Light if you can't wait for the update. works well on my EVO.
Has 4 brightness settings and will blink Morse code
@fais I've been using the LED as a flashlight with an app for a while. But, still glad they are now including it
