Global Chat: We're only human edition

Welcome to this week's Global Chat! We love hearing what you have to say at Massively, and we love it even more when we can share the best comments with all of our readers. Massively staffers will be contributing some of their favorite comments every week, so keep an eye out every Sunday for more Global Chat!

This week's edition of Global Chat focuses on combat styles and playable races. Follow along after the jump to see what our readers had to say this week!

Beau's most recent edition of Free for All focused on action-based gaming, and quite a few people had some thoughts to add. Massively reader Sorithal takes a fairly balanced approach:

I like action-based games that are more tactical or whatnot... as in, you can't auto-lock onto players with a spell and be guaranteed to hit them with each spell flung; you actually have to sort of time/predict where to aim and stay on your toes, even as a melee user.

Otherwise, I'm fine with the usual stuff found in games like
Lord of the Rings Online, World of Warcraft, and RIFT. Sure, I like the feeling that I control my character's actions with everything I press, but not when it's dumbed down to require basically nothing but button-mashing.

One of the week's hottest topics centered around Guild Wars 2. The information avalanche from fans, media, and the ArenaNet team itself continued throughout last week, and there were about a dozen topics to focus on. A couple of Massively readers took a close look at the game's human race, with very differing outlooks. Soloist30 had this to say:

I gotta say this folks: Why did the ANet devs see it necessary to piss all over the Humans? They never mention the fact that the Charr pushed the Forgotten out of Ascalon, or ( as mentioned by someone else) that they slaughtered tens of thousands in the searing.

All the other races have been vindicated; they all have been praised by the devs in one way or the other. They also don't mention how at the same time they destroyed and invaded Ascalon, they invaded Kryta and were defeated by Saul D'Allesio, or that it was the Charr who led to the destruction of the kingdom of Orr.

It's an interesting take on the human race since it's such a common race to be able to play in many MMOs. They're normally the most well-balanced race, but they're having a bit of a harder time in this game. Irem had some things to say on the positive side of all this:

I don't see it as a negative thing that humanity is in decline in GW2. It gives them a kind of bittersweet, melancholy dignity. They're an old race, which is a nice change from most MMOs, in which humans are the new, upstart kids on the block -- and most of the history of Tyria was written by them.

Part of the drama of being a human in
GW2 is establishing that humanity is still a force to be reckoned with, and I don't think they'd be nearly as interesting without that element. The writers didn't take anything away from humans by adding it; in fact, they gave it to them deliberately, to add to the depth of the race.
