MADE museum delves into early 3D games
The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment will host its first exhibit in Oakland starting December 3. Appropriately for its first foray into a physical exhibition space, the museum is highlighting "The History of Early 3D." That's 3D as in polygons, not glasses. Think Star Fox and Doom.

Oakland Video Game Museum Opens First Exhibit"The History of 3D"
San Francisco - November 28, 2011 - The Museum of Art and Digital
Entertainment (The MADE) will open its first exhibit to the public on
December 3, 10 AM to 5 PM at its location in downtown Oakland. This
exhibit focuses on the History of 3D in games, and will feature
playable demonstrations of games displayed.
The MADE is a 501c(3) non-profit museum dedicated to the preservation
of videogames, and the presentation of games as art. The History of 3D
is the first exhibit hosted by the Museum since it secured a location
in October. The MADE raised $20,000 on crowd-funding site
Kickstarter.com, and has used those funds to pay for its new
facilities.
"3D is such a broad topic in video games. Our exhibit creators, Jason
Cutler and Nealon Leadbetter evaluated hundreds of games and types of
3D, from voxels to vectors, from pre-rendered sprites to normal mapped
polygons," said Alex Handy, director of The MADE. "They've chosen a
wonderfully varied set of examples from the rich history of video
gaming on consoles and computers. We hope this exhibition inspires the
next generation of game developers, both young and old."
Henry Lowood, Curator for History of Science & Technology Collections
at Stanford University Libraries and founding member of The MADE's
board of directors, said that "Digital games without a doubt have
become one of the central creative media available for entertainment,
art and other forms of expression. So much so that contemporary
cultural history is difficult to talk about without including digital
games. As a result, not only will the history of this medium be lost
if we do not preserve the history of digital games, but there is more
at stake: we will be unable to provide a complete cultural history of
our times."
The History of 3D will be on display throughout December on weekends,
and during other hours which will be scheduled and shown on the MADE's
Website www.themade.org. The December 3 opening will take place from
10 AM to 5 PM at The MADE's location in Oakland. Admission will be
donation based, and the suggested donation will be $10. No one will be
turned away for lack of funds.
The MADE also hosts Tuesday night fighting game tournaments at 7 PM, a
free kids programming class every Saturday morning at 10 AM, and will
be hosting a Reddit Meetup on December 10 from 6 PM to 11 PM.
