Transmogrifying a tribute to engineering
We've talked a lot about creating transmogrification looks that mimic other characters -- in-game NPCs that we adore like Thisalee Crow or even looks that pay homage to characters from other beloved video games. But there's absolutely no need to limit yourself to mimicking other characters with transmogrification. It can be just as fun to create an homage to a favorite mount, pet -- or in today's case, a profession!
Today we've got two looks based on the beloved profession of engineering. I actually stumbled onto this look while trying to create a monochromatic piece for the heck of it, but I was pleased enough with how it turned out for me that I decided to share it with all of you. In addition to my own leather number, I've put together a cloth outfit as well -- and I'll see what I can do to create a mail and plate version in the following weeks.
These outfits include exactly one piece of epic level gear; the rest of the sets are created from greens and blues. Engineers aren't really concerned with being decked out in the best of Azeroth's fashion, they're much more interested in tinkering with various gadgets and explosives.
Engineering fashion for the cloth caster
Head You'll want a pair of goggles for this outfit, of course -- no engineer would be caught dead without them! Shown here are Bright-Eye Goggles, a BoE cloth headpiece created by your local engineer.
Shoulders For shoulders, we went with something small and completely understated. Look for Laughing Skull Shoulderpads in Outland or on your local Auction House.
Back Engineers aren't concerned with cloaks! You can turn that cloak graphic off.
Chest This buckled chestpiece is the Duskwoven Tunic, a level 50 green item that drops in zones in the 51-to-57 level range, or find it in the Auction House.
Shirt The tunic and gloves really provide more than enough coverage, so don't worry about a shirt.
Wrists Bracers will be covered by your gloves, so you don't need to worry about swapping their look.
Hands Shown here are the Hands of the Exalted Herald, dropped by Princess Moira Bronzebeard in Blackrock Depths. Don't worry, despite what you may think, killing Moira won't break the time line. Badly.
Waist To keep things nice and simple, the Aurora Sash makes a nice belt for this look.
Legs There is something to be said about a good pair of comfortable, beat-up, patch-ridden pants. Look for Fireheart Leggings in Outland or on the Auction House.
Feet No good engineer works without a nice, big pair of solid boots to protect the toes from potentially heavy falling objects. Pictured are the Treads of the Wandering Nomad. These boots can be farmed from the General Rajaxx event in the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj.
Main-hand weapon There are a lot of oddball-looking caster-suitable weapons out there. We've gone with a one-handed mace for this look, the Goblin Nutcracker, because it looks like a giant hammer. And who doesn't love a hammer?
Off-hand item For an interesting off-hand, take a look at the Furbolg Medicine Pouch. It's a bag! Who knows what's in the bag -- could be gears, could be tools, could be potentially radioactive metals! You can buy this off-hand from Gorn One Eye in Felwood, but you need to be honored with the Timbermaw to get it!
Engineering fashion in leather
Head Goggles are a must, of course. For the leather option, have an engineer whip you up a pair of Cogspinner Goggles -- the recipe can be found on vendors in Hellfire Peninsula.
Shoulders Leather-wearing classes have a selection of one-shouldered leather spaulders that can be found through various old-world quests. For the brown version, the Defiant Spire Shoulderguard can be obtained by both Alliance and Horde from a quest in Desolace.
Chest Who doesn't love a good work shirt? Head to Blackrock Depths, gleefully murder Plugger Spazzring, and nab yourself a Mixologist's Tunic.
Shirt No shirt needed!
Wrists Don't worry about the bracers, either.
Hands The Gloves of Haze, looted from Asaad in Vortex Pinnacle, make a nice pair of heavyweight gloves.
Waist The Belt of Feigned Joy is a quest reward from Thousand Needles. The colors work nicely with this look.
Legs Ask your local leatherworker to whip you up a pair of Light Leather Pants for a good set of beat-up trousers.
Feet These are the best boots ever. They're monstrous and huge and fantastic for getting that steel-toed boot look. You can find the Boots of the Neverending Path at the Argent Vanguard in Icecrown, but you'll need to be exalted with the Argent Crusade to purchase them. They are unique, fabulous, and worth every copper.
Main-hand weapon Rogues are either going to be toting legendaries (which cannot be transmogrified) or likely the stage 1 or 2 daggers. Go to Scarlet Monastery and kill Interrogator Vishas for the Torturing Poker, which looks suitably engineer-ish -- well, perhaps more blacksmith-ish, but you need to work with metal if you're an engineer, too! Because this is a one-handed dagger, you can use it to transmogrify both weapons.
Druid weapons For druids, a staff is far more likely to be carted around than daggers. Unfortunately, there aren't a ton of good engineering staves around. However, the Insidious Staff has a fairly industrial look to it that could work for you. For one-handed maces, the Goblin Nutcracker is still a good idea. And if you happen to be carting around a two-handed mace, get thee to Molten Core, pick up a Finkle's Lava Dredger, and consider your outfit complete!
As you can see, even the most battered and worn armor can make a statement if it's paired with the right pieces and accessories. Remember, when you're putting together transmogrification looks, the only thing really limiting you is your imagination. The world of Azeroth is full of inspiration to pull from -- whether it's the creatures and people wandering around, the scenery from areas you like to visit, or even the professions that you love.
