Nintendo is bringing Pokémon to the iPad, in trading card form

Nintendo is taking a huge step towards iPad acceptance with the confirmation that it is working on a Pokémon card game for Apple's tablet. No release date or other information has been revealed, aside from a screenshot released on Twitter, but the confirmation from Nintendo is indeed a huge deal.

Pokémon gained huge popularity as a trading card game in the mid-to-late 1990s, and many of the kids who were addicted to the endlessly collectable cards are now a bit older, and likely much more tech savvy. It's a great time to make the game digital, and the iPad is the perfect platform, especially in the distant wake of the official Pokédex app which was released way back in 2012.

Nintendo needs to embrace the App Store. They know it, we know it, and the fans know it. But like any massive game entity, it's a slow-moving beast that takes its sweet time getting to its destination regardless of how much money it is hemorrhaging along the way. Pushing the massive monster forward with a real Pokémon game is a great move for Nintendo, and with card game apps regaining popularity -- Hearthstone, anyone? -- for the first time in a long time, Nintendo is playing its cards right.
