Perhaps fearing that we wouldn't understand the concept of reading books on a DS, Nintendo sent press copies of the game disguised in a form that readers would find comfortable: a large, "leather"-bound, hardcover book. Only upon opening the front cover did we learn its terrible secret: it's not full of paper at all, but rather a copy of 100 Classic Books, Nintendo and HarperCollins' DS collection of literary standards. 100 Classic Books will be in stores (in a regular DS case) June 14. To browse the books included in the collection, check Nintendo's official site. %Gallery-94728%

  • Nintendo to release 100 Classic Book Collection for DS on June 14

The Nintendo DS's dual-screen design has always invited book comparisons, and the new DSi XL even more so with those two 4.2-inch displays, so now's as good a time as any for Nintendo to announce that its 100 Classic Book Collection will be coming to American shores on June 14 for $20. Joystiq says they're expecting the book list to be the same as the Euro pack, so expect some choice public domain works here -- we doubt this has got any of the big e-book players shaking in their shoes, but just wait until Miyamoto releases the $129 Wii Eye Motion Detector with packed-in Mario's Read Speed mini-game. Then it's gonna get crazy.

Why did it take Nintendo a year and a half to localize a bunch of books that were already in English? No idea, but at least we'll finally be able to buy the 100 Classic Book Collection in North America this year. It's out as 100 Classic Books on June 14, at a cost of $19.99. Nintendo has yet to release a list of the included novels in this version, but we expect it to be identical to the European release. In other words, the greatest hits of the public domain.
