To properly hype fans for this winter's Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Capcom has prepared a series of screenshots comparing the original Ace Attorney games to their updated, 3DS counterparts. As you'd expect, the leap from older handhelds to the 3DS offers Capcom's artists more aesthetic freedom and the result is a more colorful, less pixelated adventure. To see for yourself, visit the Capcom Unity website, where the publisher has posted 12 comparison screenshots in addition to the image seen above. We're still waiting on an official release date for the game, but as we're rapidly approaching the holiday season, that information should appear soon. [Image: Capcom]

The Great Ace Attorney features the greatest sleuth of all time, Sherlock Holmes, and his companion, Dr. Watson – though this time around the good doctor is an 8-year-old girl genius named Iris Watson, Famitsu reveals (via Kotaku). The site has the first images of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Iris Watson in The Great Ace Attorney, a prequel series that stars Ryuichi Naruhodo, an ancestor of the franchise's hero, Phoenix Wright. Watson lives with Holmes and she is the author of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, a role that aligns with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's own canon. Holmes and Watson will be part of the game's "collaborative deduction" system, the site reports. Alongside Naruhodo, Holmes and Watson, The Great Ace Attorney stars a new heroine, Susato Mikotoba. The Great Ace Attorney is due out in spring 2015 for 3DS in Japan. [Image: Famitsu]

The next Ace Attorney game from Capcom is apparently called The Great Ace Attorney, and is the start of a new series, according to a Famitsu interview with the game's producers translated by Siliconera. The game is in development for 3DS and is currently exclusive to Japan. Producer Shintaro Kojima says that while the next game is "not a main-numbered Ace Attorney title, it's the start of a new series called The Great Ace Attorney" and that "it's not simply just a derivative title." Series creator and director Shu Takumi also noted that "the image and feel behind its play will be quite different from all the other Ace Attorney games up until now." The Great Ace Attorney was revealed in the latest issue of Famitsu this week, and is set in Japan's Meiji period. The game's protagonist is Ryuichi Naruhodo, an ancestor of the series primary hero Phoenix Wright. Capcom's first trailer for the game introduces Naruhodo and a new heroine, Susato Mikotoba, who Kojima says is "pretty much a graceful Japanese woman, a proper girl who does everything the proper way." The first trailer for the new Meiji era Ace Attorney shows us the stars of the 3DS game and their more classic courtroom backdrop. There's not any gameplay to go on, but we do get a good look at Ryuunosuke Naruhodo, ancestor of one Phoenix Wright, and the lady who's likely his assistant in floral dress, Mikatoba Susato. According to Court-Records.net, Susato is an "ideal Japanese woman" who's a lover of foreign detectives and a progressive dreamer. Knowing the Ace Attorney series, there's probably a bit more to her than that. Capcom only just announced the game for Japan, so no surprise that there's no word on the turn-of-the-20th-century adventure turning out for the West. In the interim, you can dream via a translated version of the new trailer. [Image: Famitsu]

A scan, reportedly lifted from the latest issue of Famitsu, reveals that the next entry in the fan-favorite Ace Attorney series will leave our modern era in favor of Japan's Meiji period. Not much is known of the new game, though according to a tweet from Ace Attorney fan site Court-Records.net, it will bear the title "Dai Gyakuten Saiban - Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken," which translates to "Grand Turnabout Trial - The Adventures of Naruhodou Ryuunosuke." From this, we can deduce that the game stars an ancestor of Ace Attorney protagonist Phoenix Wright (who is known as Ryuichi Naruhodo in his native Japan). The character portrayed in the scan does indeed resemble Mr. Wright, though the latter never wore a katana into the courtroom. Finally, Court-Records reveals that long-time Ace Attorney developer Shu Takumi is once again leading this project and that it is currently in development for the 3DS handheld. It's currently unknown if the game will make its way to Western shores, or if it will remain exclusive to Japan. [Image: Famitsu]

  • Phoenix Wright creator objected to sequels after Ace Attorney 3

Shu Takumi is not one to pump out game after game in a series just because it's popular. After finishing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials & Tribulations, or Gyakuten Saiban 3 for purists, Takumi firmly told Capcom, "Hold it!" "I felt that Phoenix's story had been told, and that the series should not continue", Takumi told Official Nintendo Magazine in a recent interview. "Knowing when to end a story is very important and I wanted to avoid dragging it out and having it become a shadow of its former self." Trials and Tribulations provided a nice cap on the story of Phoenix Wright, a young lawyer with a penchant for bluffing his way into proving clients' innocence, that started on the Game Boy Advance in 2001. That's why when Capcom decided it would push the series forward with or without Takumi, the designer came up with a new ace attorney.

  • Nintendo Direct news roundup: Yoshi 3DS XL in UK, new Ace Attorney

During its UK Nintendo Direct presentation yesterday, Nintendo revealed a Yoshi 3DS XL system – just the hardware, no Yoshi game included – heading to Europe on March 14, Tiny Cartridge points out. Earlier this month, we caught wind of a Yoshi's New Island 3DS XL bundle rumored to launch on March 14, but a hardware-software collection hasn't been announced just yet. There's no word on a North American launch for the Yoshi system. Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi confirmed that he is working on a new entry in the series that will shift those games in a new direction. Japan gets a Monster Hunter 4 3DS XL on March 27, this one based on the dual-horned, hairy beast Rajang. That system was announced during Nintendo's Japanese stream of Nintendo Direct. This whole "three streams for three different regions all at the same time" process is making it tough to keep track of everything, at least if you're a disembodied, global internet person-simulation like us. Capcom plans to enter the ring and reaffirm its presence in the fighting game world, Deep Down producer Kazunori Sugiura told 4gamer in a group interview translated by Destructoid. There's no word yet on which IPs will lead the charge. The next Phoenix Wright game is already in the works, Dual Destinies director Takeshi Yamazaki said. Director of Phoenix Wright 1 - 3, Ghost Trick and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (due for western launch in 2014) Shu Takumi said that his team will announce a game next year – yes, the year that begins in two days. Capcom will announce a revival of one of its classic IPs by "the time the weather warms," Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara producer Kenji Sugiura said. Smell that? It's the scent of pure, optimistic ambition at the start of another new year. Breathe it in, everyone.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies will be the first installment of the Ace Attorney series to use full 3D graphics, a change Art Director Takuro Fuse has detailed at length on the Capcom-Unity blog. Fuse described the team's first attempt to bring Phoenix into the third dimension as "cringe-worthy," but by refining character aesthetics and utilizing "slick camera work," Fuse and his team were able to show off a "new, hybrid Phoenix" that successfully merged 2D and 3D art. "I hope when you get the chance to play the game that you'll play it with the 3D volume all the way up," Fuse wrote. "Nothing would make me happier than to have you experience it in all its glory!" Phoenix wasn't the only character to go through several designs, however.

The only thing that could make this TGS trailer for Ace Attorney 5 – which features the new 3D models in motion for the first time – any more interesting is if you could understand the dialogue. And now, thanks to YouTube user and subtitler Bolt2nd, now you can totally understand what's happening. And what's happening is a new system that lets you watch for contradictory emotional responses during testimony. To help with this, new partner Kokone appears to have some kind of empathic ability. It's not an Ace Attorney courtroom without psychic powers!

Originally announced back in January during Capcom's 10-year anniversary celebration for the series, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD will bring upscaled remasters of the original three DS games to iOS 5.0 devices sometime this fall. While the trilogy app itself will be free to download, the games themselves (Ace Attorney, Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations) must be purchased, either separately or as a bundle, with the first two chapters of Ace Attorney serving as a demo. At the moment, no pricing information has been given, either for the games' individual costs or their bundle total. The port also includes "Everybody Object" mode, which allows the user to email or tweet animated gifs and sound files of Phoenix Wright catch phrases, which we're sure will not be abused or instantly run into the ground by every single person we know.%Gallery-163653%

While we wait in vain for news of an Ace Attorney Investigations 2 localization (we know, it's not going to happen), Japanese audiences can settle in for some new Edgeworth material, in the form of a third musical by the Takarazuka Revue.Starting in January 13, the group's "Cosmos Troupe" will present "Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney 3," a new play starring Hiro Yumi as Miles Edgeworth. Yumi previously played Edgeworth in the previous two Phoenix Wright-focused productions. The play fits with Capcom's "Single Content Multiple Usage" strategy. We hope to see this content used in games again soon. Ace Attorney 5 was announced earlier this year and hasn't been shown yet, and Level-5 is working on a Professor Layton/Ace Attorney crossover game.

Director Takashi Miike's Phoenix Wright movie will be released in Japan on Blu-Ray and DVD on August 22. The home releases include a commentary track by Miike and Ace Attorney series creator Shu Takumi, along with a bonus disc with another Takumi interview, trailers, and other assorted material. The US and Japan use the same Blu-Ray region, so you can import that version and watch it. The language barrier might be an issue, but we're pretty sure we'd be able to follow the story of Phoenix Wright in pantomime by now.In the meantime, you do have a couple of opportunities to see it with English subtitles. The movie will be shown twice in NYC as part of the New York Asian Film Festival, on July 8 and July 15.

During the International Film Festival Rotterdam, news of a localized release for Takashi Miike's Ace Attorney adaptation came from a reliable source: Takashi Miike himself. At a Q&A following a showing of the film, Miike announced that a worldwide release was planned.According to Twitchfilm, each version would have both dubbed and subtitled dialogue using the character names from that region's version of the games. So Miles Edgeworth, et al. in America, but ... Benjamin Hunter in France. Now that we have admissible evidence that we'll be able to see the movie, how is it? "This is definitely a love-it or hate-it affair, and if you don't dig the silly caricature tongue-in-cheek atmosphere which inhabits the universe of 'Ace Attorney,' you will tire of the film way before its halfway point has been reached," Twitchfilm said. "But if you DO have fun with it, this is the fastest way to spend almost two and a half hours."

Cap Bar, Capcom's bar in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is set to open Jan. 25, complete with game kiosks, a Capcom merch store and a Capcom-themed menu -- including the following four teaser dishes: - Ace Attorney pasta and rice - Monster Hunter allaculte and meat - Devil Kings salad and soup - Resident Evil "Brain Cake" dessert Aside from the Brain Cake -- "Zombies are targeting your brain. Equip the blade and fight!" as Capcom describes it -- the other dishes appear to be a tad vague, even for a teaser menu. Just saying, we wouldn't walk into a bar in the states and order the "meat," but maybe that can fly in Shinjuku. %Gallery-144739%
