Today is the day that the BlackBerry-toting Mac faithful have been waiting for. After years of "making do" with less-than-desirable options like PocketMac and Missing Sync, RIM has taken it upon itself to finally release a home-cooked solution for Mac users who simply want to back up their devices without having to install a virtual machine or revert to a Windows PC. Well, it's been a long month and a half since they first announced it was coming, but BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac has finally landed (officially, we mean), and we're glad to say it definitely gets the job done. Check out our full impressions and a quick rundown of the big features over on Engadget Mobile!

A tiny little beta leak earlier this month let BlackBerry-toting Mac fans knew that something good was coming in the near future, and now we know it's very near indeed (though a bit later than expected). On October 2 RIM will release BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac, specifically at 1:00pm EST. That means instead of wrapping up your busy work-week being productive you can instead spend the afternoon fighting long download queues and playing around getting this app configured -- for purely work-related purposes of course, like syncing with iCal, Address Book, and automatically backing up contacts. Just don't tell your boss you'll also be able to sync your iTunes collection to your handset, including album art, something that should make Pre-owning Bob down the hall a little jealous. Again, the fun starts Friday afternoon at 1:00 EST. Clear your calendars accordingly.Read - RIM Launches BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac UsersRead - Download here come Friday

It's been a long time coming, but there's finally light at the end of the tunnel for Mac-toting BlackBerry fans -- BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac is scheduled for release this month, and a beta version has already leaked out. Unlike a certain scrappy competitor's hacky solution, BBDM lets you sync with iTunes, Address Book, and iCal without any monkey business, and you'll also be able to manage and install applications and other files right from your desktop. We haven't tried the beta (we're not pushing our Snow Leopard luck), but we hear it's stable -- do let us know how things turn out if you're brave enough to install it.[Thanks, bighap]

Field report tidbits from Engadget's mobile insider, the Boy Genius. [Looks like Boy Genius didn't take off for Labor Day either. Today it's the new BlackBerry Desktop Manager -- tomorrow, who knows what? -Ed.]I got a look at the new BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 4.2 today I'm thrilled! Media Manager, Switch Device Wizard, when will it stop? RIM has updated the desktop manager to reflect the new Pearl and media features. Everything is self contained, so even though 8100 goes into mass storage mode when you connect it via USB, it is all also accessible from the comfort of your BlackBerry Desktop Manager. The switch device wizard is a godsend for all of us who constantly change our devices -- and it is not limited to BlackBerrys, either. It also will help if you are coming from a Treo or Pocket PC device. Click on for some shots!
