Cats are like Apple products -- it's hard to stop at just one. Reader Alexa Sherwood-Brown shared a number of cat photos with us, but the awwwww-some video she linked of little George (named after Prince George of Cambridge) was just too hard to pass up. The two cats at the top of the page are Charley (left) and TIgger (the ginger cat at right), and here's what Alexa has to say about this trio of felines: The kitten is called George, named after the prince. He's roughly the same age as the prince (we're not sure as we took him in as a stray). The other two are Charley (the black one) and Tigger (the old ginger one). They all love playing and lying on the laptops (although they do make it hard work when they move over the trackpad) - in fact George has sent a few emails before I've finished typing them! We'll be starting up our Dog Days of Summer feature on July 5, so we'd like to ask our canine-owning readers to start sending in those pics of their favorite pups hard at work on "their" Apple devices. If you have a Dog Days nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page (and please remember that the photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple and its products -- don't just send us a photo of your canine buddy). For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Many thanks to Alexa Sherwood-Brown for the pictures of her feline companions and that wonderful video of George

Pink is a lovely cat who, according to owner and TUAW reader wouter, loved to sleep on his old white MacBook back when she was only about six months old. All I can say is "that can't be comfortable"! Pink resides with Floyd, naturally, in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Wouter says: We've got two cats: Pink and Floyd. This is Pink. When she was just about 6 months old, she was a real fan of my white MacBook and loved to sleep on it. I've switched to a 15" MacBook Pro, but apparently she doesn't like the all aluminium body, because these days it is the sleeve that is her favourite sleeping place. Floyd is more of a Samsung fan, because she loves to watch nature films on the 40" Samsung. No wonder they're fighting all the time... And now for some very sad news. I regret to say that Ruby, the Internet Famous Cat passed away on June 7, 2014 at the age of nineteen years and six months. She will be greatly missed by her human mom and dad, as well as her fans on TUAW TV Live. In addition, we'll be starting up our Dog Days of Summer feature on July 5, so we'd like to ask our canine-owning readers to start sending in those pics of their favorite pups hard at work on "their" Apple devices. Many thanks to Wouter for the humorously uncomfortable picture of Pink!

  • Caturday: Mr. G, the coding feline

Sometimes coding can be soooo exhausting that you just have to lay down on your MacBook Air and take a nap... Mr. G (apparently short for Mr. Grumblecat) is a ten-month-old blue British Shorthair who provides top-notch development support to his human Eric Kelly. New fans of Mr. G will be happy to hear all of his stats: "He likes to sleep in places that seem like they would be very uncomfortable, like on a wooden tray. He loves to sit on my lap when I'm on the computer and watch what I'm doing. Another really funny thing that he does is that every night when we go to bed, he waits about 10 minutes and then comes into the bedroom with one of his toys in his mouth. His favorite food is trout." And lest you think that Mr. G actually lets Eric do all the work, we have proof that he's a hard worker: We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Please let us know via our feedback page and please remember that your cat photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple or its products. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Many thanks to Eric Kelly and Mr. G!

There's nothing more annoying/cute than having your iCat hog your iPad. That's the situation that TUAW reader Doug Poland ran into with his cat Miss Maui, who finds the smooth surface of an iPad screen to somehow be more comfy than that pillow in the background. Cats... We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. This triptych of Caturday images comes to us courtesy of TUAW reader Bogee Romero, who says: When we adopted Loki, he was scared little 2.5 month old kitty. His brother Tigger was better adjusted so I spent more time with Loki, making sure he was always comfortable and always by my side. This meant being around my iPad as well. The sounds it made startled him so when he was about 6 months old, (photos below) I downloaded some games for cats on my iPad 2 to get him used to the different noises it makes. Soon he grew to love my iPad 2 - sitting on it and sleeping on it whenever he saw it was on - even when I was actually using it at the time. Today, (photo above) Loki is 2 years old and about 6.5kilos and I have a smaller iPad Air. He still gets startled and runs away from its noises sometimes, but just as I do, Loki loves it just as much. Bogee, be sure to show Loki his picture on TUAW -- he's Internet-famous now! We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Please let us know via our feedback page and please remember that your cat photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple or its products. Cats love to snuggle with anything that's soft and warm, and there's nothing softer than the rock-hard aluminum surface of a MacBook Pro. Whut? Aapparently reader Kevin Yapjoco's cat never got the message or is just really in love with Apple products, since it laid its furry little head on this MBP and went right to sleep. It really makes you wonder if Jony Ive uses cat-friendliness as a criteria for his successful design. We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. If you've been around the world of Apple for any length of time, then you have to know who Brett Terpstra is. Formerly with TUAW, Brett is the man behind Marked, podcasts including his very own Systematic (he's a frequent guest on just about every other podcast in the world, including Mac Power Users and CMD+Space), and his own website -- brettterpstra.com. So how does one man do all this work? A series of Flickr photos has apparently given us the answer -- Brett has an army of highly-trained intelligent cats and dogs working tirelessly to make him look really good. In the photo above you see two of his minions, Steve (at the keyboard) and Yeti (on the ground, apparently providing a second set of eyes) working on version 2.0 of Marked. The feline team also includes Jezebel, who can be seen with an iPhone below providing tech support. Ninjago is a beautiful tuxedo cat who apparently just loves to read TUAW every Saturday, but who wasn't too happy seeing all of those other cats each and every week. Ninjago's human Alica Washington was able to pick up on Ninjago's frustration, and the photo above is the result. Bridesmaid no more, Ninjago! You're now one of the most famous cats on #tuxedocatsofinstagram! So, you're a beautiful cat with gorgeous fur and lovely eyes, and your human decides to spend her time ignoring you. Instead of petting you and giving you all of her attention, she's moving her fingers around and staring at something. What do you do? Easy answer -- plop yourself down right where those fingers are moving. Petunia's human Diane Schirf told TUAW that "Petunia is jealous of the MacBook Pro and, when exasperated, resorts to lying across it because that will get attention." Petunia certainly got our attention as well! We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Maybe she's checking owner/photographer Jim Koepnick's bank account, retouching a photo of her beautiful self, or just wondering what this thing is that her human spends a lot of time staring at, but Gabby seems to be looking at something very intently. Koepnick says that Gabby likes to jump up in his chair when he gets up to "see what I was doing." Perhaps I need to see if I can train Ruby the Internet Famous Cat to do editing work for me... Cats always seem to be off in some world of their own, but TUAW reader Roy Behymer found a way to entrance his beautiful cat Sienna with the help of an iPad mini and an app by rock legend Todd Rundgren. "This is Sienna. Normally she's aloof and doesn't concern herself with lowly human technology, but this one time was different. I had Todd Rundgren's "Flowfazer' running to deplete the battery in my iPad Mini and found I had created Mesmer Kitty in the process. If only I had been playing Rundgren's 'A Dream Goes On Forever', the tableau would have been complete. Then again, Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' would have worked just fine too." We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Sometimes the name of a cat doesn't seem to fit its disposition or looks. That's the case with Tinkerbelle, the rather grumpy-looking feline in the picture above. According to her human, Joseph Veseli: My cat Tinkerbelle, don't let the name fool you, loves to lay next to the pillow I use to set my iPad. Well, every time I go to use it, she thinks I'm going to take it away from her and she tries to attack me! The picture is of her watching me to make sure I don't get her precious iPad!!! There is a way to stop that, Joseph -- buy Tinkerbelle her own iPad Air! • Halftone 2 is the easy way to turn your photos into professional looking comics

    by
    John-Michael Bond

    03.05.2014

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow, obviously, but with Halftone 2 the power to make a comic that answers that question for yourself is found on your iOS device. By pairing an impressive array of page layout and speech bubble templates with your own personal photos, Halftone 2 will have you producing sharp-looking comic pages in no time. For Halftone 2's US$1.99 asking price you get a lot to work with. You start out by loading your photos into one of the app's 33 prepared page layouts. Once you have your images in place, it's time to add dialog by placing speech bubbles and thought boxes on your images. There are 33 different kinds of bubbles to choose from: thought boxes to arrows to puffy clouds. Users can pick from any font that's currently on their phone for text, along with various sliders for changing the color and size of your dialog. If you've seen it in a comic book, it's probably at your disposal. Once you've placed your dialog, you can adjust the size and alignment of each bubble with simple finger swipes. Beyond the simple, yet powerful, templates you get 83 sound effect stamps from Comicraft -- think the 60's Batman show -- allowing you to add Bang!, Wahoo!, and Pow!'s to your stories. Halftone 2 currently features only one in-app purchase, and it's all thanks to the popularity of these stamps. For an extra $1.99, the app serves up an additional 51 graphic sound effects for your stamping pleasure. The provided tools take about ten minutes of playing around with to really get a solid grasp on, especially if you're stuck using an iPhone rather than iPad. Once you're in the groove, playtime is only limited by your imagination or the limits of your photo collection. And you're not just limited to single page issues... Thankfully Halftone also allows for the building of multiple page comics, which can be exported out of the app as documents, pdfs and even .CBZ files for reading in Simple Comics. The app also includes a "anaglyph color modification" option that allows you to transfer your comics to 3d, provided you've got the red/blue glass needed to see the effect. With Halftone 2 you can write a short comic book about your cat's disapproval of your home decorating. Or you can write a love letter to someone special. What you choose to do with Halftone 2 is up to you. Halftone 2 is the sort of app I'd love to leave a six year old alone with for a few hours, just to see what came out of their brain. The only thing holding the app back from being perfect for kids is the inability to take pictures directly in the app. Switching back and forth between camera and app eventually takes away some of the thrill of building comics on the fly. However, if you've already got a lot of photos on your device, you're ready to roll. As I've been writing this review, Halftone has been updated multiple times. That is frustrating for me as a reviewer, but great for you as a user. Developer Juicy Bits has gone out of its way to make Halftone 2 as user-friendly as possible, down to including video tutorials to answer fan questions. This dedication to building the best user experience possible shows through in every aspect of the app. If you've ever wanted to write a comic but don't have the artistic skills, Halftone 2 is going to open a wonderful door to your creativity. It's certainly worth $1.99, and every hour of your life you pour into it writing your stories.

Gidget is a beautiful cat who just happens to love reading TUAW. Her humans, Marv and Cilla Su, tell the story of Gidget's rescue and her affinity for all things Apple: We'd like to submit a picture of our sweet cat, Gidget. We adopted Gidget as a feral kitten a couple of months ago from the great folks at Feral Cat Foundation ( http://www.feralcatfoundation.org ). Gidget loves iOS devices and Macs, especially when we use them on our bed. She'll purr and purr and rub her cute little face against the edges and screen of an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook - anything as long as it's an Apple product! She's intrigued by the MacBook's fan when it comes on and she's figured out that the pads of her paws can do something when she places them on a MacBook's trackpad. In the picture, Gidget's admiring the TUAW website and mewing, "I love to read the Caturday posts on TUAW!" We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone.
