Yeahhhh, it's a good thing that those USB mice operate at a low voltage and current, since Gorky the cat has apparently decided that the "tail" of this mouse was good enough to eat. Gorky's human Jeffrey H. let us know that this was the first time that he had caught a mouse... We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Please let us know via our feedback page and please remember that your cat photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple or its products. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Many thanks to Jeffrey H. for sharing this photo with us.

This week, the cat in question is one who is very close to home. She's my almost-19-year-old tortoiseshell cat Ruby, who often appears unexpectedly on TUAW TV Live (trust me, even when you don't see her she's usually nearby). In addition to being an Internet TV star, Ruby is also employed full-time trying to keep me and my wife from using our iPads and iPhones. In the photo above, she was doing her job very well and wedging herself between Barb and her iPad. • Every dog has had his day, now we're back to Caturday

Sure, it's still officially summer until September 22, but as Mike Rose mentioned the other day on Facebook, "autumn has unofficially begun." That means that the Dog Days of Summer are now ended, and it's time for our weekly Caturday feature. Cats are usually cute, but there's nothing more painfully adorable than a sleepy kitten curled up on a warm MacBook power adapter. This image came to us via Reddit user banannaning, and it shows how well cats have adapted to reusing waste heat from our technology. In the future, all consumer electronics may come with a cat... Thanks to Mollena W. for posting this on Facebook!

Even though we get to play with a lot of cool hardware and software at TUAW, we're always on the lookout for state of the art, bleeding edge technology. It appears that one of our Caturday felines has the jump on all of us, because she's using what appears to be a touch-screen MacBook! If you've got a Caturday nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Thanks, Jason!

  • Caturday: A place in the sun

From Puk's human companion, Wanda Rijkenberg: This is Puk. Ever since she moved in with us she loves to nap in our home studio. We like to think because she's love us and that's where we often sit, but it's probably also to do with the studio equipment heating up the room. As a kitten (below) she'd squeeze between the power amp and a small mixer lit by a warm light. Now, years later, Puk grew a bit and so did the studio, leaving no place for a slightly overweight cat to squeeze into. But in winter the trees in front of the house can't stop the sun from entering the room. And every time it does Puk knows exactly when and where to find that one free spot to nap in those rare rays of winter sun: just before the afternoon, on the pen tablet in front of the computer. If you've got a Caturday nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Thanks, Wanda!

Surgeon General's Warning: The picture above is too cute. Avert your eyes quickly, and move on to other TUAW posts before you get the urge to rub this kitten's cute little belly and pink feet, warm from snoozing on his owner's MacBook Pro. We don't have a name for this week's Caturday model, but owner Baz Francis of Adelaide, South Australia says that "he's a two month old ginger kitten who loves watching my partner play World of Warcraft on my 15" MacBook Pro. When he's not intently staring at the screen with his head tilted or clawing at the weird characters, he's lying on his back dreaming that he's a Mac superman." This looks like just the cat for our very own gamer extraordinaire, Mike Schramm! If you've got a Caturday nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page. • Neverwinter team offers token of peace for beta mess

So Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios figure that Neverwinter players may not exactly be happy about the list of game-breaking bugs and exploits found in the game's open beta over the last few weeks. To help alleviate that player frustration, the developers are offering up an olive branch of sorts in the form of the Caturday Survivor's Pack full of in-game goodies. For all characters created before 8 a.m. EDT (5 a.m. PDT) on Sunday, May 19th, this pack is waiting in their in-game mailbox. In it, each character will find a Stone of Health, a Dwarven Facemask, five teleport scrolls to the Protector's Enclave, two Adventurer's XP boosters, and a Cape of Catastrophe. Hey, at least they have a sense of humor about it.

  • Caturday: Mac mini is Biru's pillow

What can be more comfortable to a cat than a pillow that blows warm air out of an optical media slot and vibrates ever so gently? That appears to be why Biru (Indonesian for Blue) loves to rest on a Mac mini owned by reader Peter Stagg and his wife. Peter says, "Biru is my wife's British Short-haired and constant companion, especially when she is working in her study or on her laptop. He has claimed the lives of two laptops so far and is working on the Mac mini, very slowly. When he's not enjoying the warm air expelled from the optical media slot he lies across the front of the keyboard and doubles as a wrist support." Biru also seems to be keeping a Logitech headset nice and warm for his owners! So there you have it! A cat who not only forces equipment upgrades from his owners, but who is also a working Mac accessory! If you've got a Caturday nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Thanks, Peter!

You thought you were going to get through another weekend without that TUAW classic Caturday? Well, you're wrong. Today's feline geek is Max, a six-month-old Singapura who loves to help his human, Sumner Paine, work on his 27" iMac. According to Sumner, "He helps me type on the keyboard, he helps me swipe on the Magic Trackpad, and he defends against those pesky mouse pointers by pawing and pouncing at them every chance he gets. On those occasional lazy days when he's in the mood to rest, he enjoys napping on the Time Machine under the desk." If you've got a Caturday nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Thanks, Sumner!

When you're coding, it's always nice to have a friendly helper ready to pop up at any moment and give you inspiration. In this case, Caturday model Herman the Birman seems to be imploring owner and TUAW reader Tom King to spend less coding and more time playing. Every once in a while, we see a Caturday submission of a cat photo that's so cute, it's almost dangerous in its intensity. That was the case when reader Kevin-Paul Deveau sent pictures of his three cats, all of whom are huge fans of watching videos on a 27" iMac. While Sugar (a white Persian) and Sarah (a black cat) were both hit with the pretty stick as well, it was Molly (tri-colored Persian, AKA MoMo) who caught our attention. Here Molly appears to be perusing a list of YouTube finds in anticipation of some lap time while she watches her choice of video. If you've got a Caturday nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Thanks, Kevin-Paul!

    04.13.2013

We were a bit late getting the weekly Caturday today, but not to worry -- a feline friend reminded me to leaf through the weekly submissions from TUAW readers and find the most deserving gato to entertain you tonight. This week's Caturday model is Chunky, who owns TUAW reader Bill Lynch. Bill notes that Chunky likes to sit directly in front of one his dual monitors, forcing his human to move his work to the other monitor. Those monitors are driven by a 2006 vintage Mac Pro that also acts as Chunky's personal heat source, and he likes to lay behind it to bask in the hot air and the flickering glow of the Ethernet status LED. If you've got a Caturday nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Thanks, Bill!

  • Caturday: Ruby the programmer cat

Today's Caturday model is Ruby, who got his name when his owner Cedric Tineo found the cat as a kitten wandering the streets. Cedric was learning how to program in Ruby at the time, and the name stuck. Ruby appears to be frustrated by his programming efforts, as he's decided to just give up and snooze on the keyboard. We're not sure exactly what that command on the screen means -- perhaps it is an attempt to program Cedric to get him some food. If you have pictures of cats with Apple gear blissfully sleeping in the sun or in other happy states, send us a link and description via our tips page.

This week's Caturday gato is Moco, who owner Boan Rubalcava says "loves to sit on top of the Apple TV" (under his right front paw, as you can see). I wonder if Moco watches all the shows upside down from his perch above the TV? The handsome Moco is already Internet-famous, having been the star of an Instagram entry where he was viewed thousands of times and got a whopping 867 likes! Last time we tried to run a picture of reader Craig Syverson's household conqueror, Genghis Khat, we ran a picture of the wrong feline! Now we have the correct cat, who seems to have found his perfect snoozing spot in this Caturday classic. Syverson, who works as a UX designer in the Bay Area, says "I'm sharing a photo of my cat, Genghis Khat, who regularly falls asleep when I'm in the middle of working. Since I use a Wacom tablet full-time, my arm provides a convenient support for his napping requirements." If you've got a Caturday nominee to share, let us know via our feedback page. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Thanks Craig!

It's Caturday again, and the challenge is this: Can you imagine a world with a new cat every minute? Cats here, cats there, cats everywhere! You don't have to imagine it; you can live it, thanks to the Cat-a-minute! app from Alan Scully. The light-hearted app delivers you a new cat photo every minute of the day. There are four different cat channels, so you can hop from channel to channel to see different cats. Cat pictures are pulled from Creative Commons sources and new photos are being added every day. Cat-a-minute! is available for free from the iOS App Store. Two 99-cent in-app-purchases let you add on a dog pack, or a speed pack that displays new images every 15 or 30 seconds.
