In addition to officially revealing next week's XBLA offerings, Major Nelson has also laid out Xbox Live Marketplace schedule for the rest of June, including the Deal of the Week, Games on Demand and Avatar Marketplace. The Deal of the Week -- or Deals of the Week, rather -- takes the spotlight, with several decent titles on sale. Darwinia+ will be marked down to 800 points ($10), while Defense Grid, PB Winterbottom, Rocket Riot and Poker Smash will all be marked down to 400 points ($5). Also, the OneBigGame charity project, Chime, will be reduced to a puny 240 points ($3). Meanwhile, both Tomb Raider Underworld and Command & Conquer 3 will hit Games on Demand on June 29, and some Crackdown 2 Avatar items will be released on July 1.

"Hey Ricky, what are you downloading?" "Oh, what's up, Mitch? Check it out, I found a place on the 360 Dashboard where you can get the Resurgence Pack for $4!" "Wow, that's a pretty great deal!" "Yeah, the only catch is they're only releasing one pair of maps per week for $0.99 a piece." "...But that equals eight maps. I thought they were only adding five maps to Modern Warfare 2." "Well, the other only catch is that they don't work with Modern Warfare 2, because they're actually maps for Defense Grid that just happen to -- purely by coincidence, I'm sure -- be called the Resurgence packs." "... I don't even know you any more."

Major Nelson has dropped a new Xbox Live Marketplace schedule for the remainder of March and beginning of April and, while we knew about most of the major releases already, there's still some surprises to be found. First, the next two weeks will see some nice Deal of the Week promotions, with Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram falling to 800 ($10) and Geometry Wars 2 dropping to a paltry 400 ($5). Beyond that, Xbox Live Silver members will also be able to enjoy free Xbox Live Gold -- including online multiplayer, Netflix, last.fm, Facebook and Twitter -- from noon ET on April 1 through noon ET on April 5. And, as if all that wasn't enough, Major announced that ten Xbox Live Arcade games will go on sale from April 1 through April 7. The full list of games hasn't been announced, though it will include Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, South Park and Defense Grid. Check out the full Xbox Live schedule after the break.

Halo Wars Yeah, that's right, Halo Wars. I've already caught enough flak for putting this on my best-of list for 2009 (it's hard to even remember that it came out way back in February), but it deserves to be recognized ... so pay attention once your laughter has died down. Ensemble Studios (RIP) proved that you could bring a real-time strategy game to a console, and still make it enjoyable. Sure, you'll never have 1:1 parity mapping everything a full-sized keyboard offers onto a controller, but this game came close. It's a pity Ensemble closed, since we'll never see any expansion packs or a sequel. The good news is that, since it wasn't received with blaring trumpets and the sounds of cash registers ringing, you can pick this up for under 20 bucks for some good fun.

Two new games find their way onto Xbox Live Arcade this week, and they are about as disparate as two games can be. First, there's Yo-Ho Kablammo (800 / $10), the second place winner of the 2007 Dream-Build-Play competition. It features pirate ships, monkeys, mines, treasure, and plenty of sea battles. On the other hand, we've got Defense Grid (800 / $10), a tower defense game featuring some nice graphics, lots of different towers and multiple enemy types. Take a look at this week's XBLA in Brief and see if either one piques your interest. • This Wednesday: Defense Grid awakens Yo-Ho KaBlammo on XBLA

This week's XBLA offerings are a pair of 800 ($10) titles, reports Major Nelson: Defense Grid: The Awakening and Yo-Ho KaBlammo. Each title is a bit heavy on the combat, with Defense Grid offering plenty of tower defense action, and Yo-Ho KaBlammo taking to the seas for some free-for-all naval combat. That sounds all well and good, but whatever happened to killing 'em with kindness? What would Gandhi say?

Developer Hidden Path has shown the way to Defense Grid: The Awakening's release: it hits XBLA on September 2. The tower defense title was well received in its PC incarnation and will cost 800 ($10) on the console. The Xbox version of the game includes the Borderlands (not be confused with the other Borderlands) mission pack, along with a few new challenge modes. The game already comes with a full campaign and what appears to be a significant amount of content for the price.%Gallery-30801%[Via Eurogamer]

The personal com-pu-ter's Defense Grid: The Awakening will make its way to Xbox Live Arcade in late summer. Developer Hidden Path's tower defense game was well received after release and even made our "best of the rest" list last year. There's currently no price for the game, but hopefully it won't follow the path of the 1200 ($15) trend. If you're not looking forward on waiting -- or simply can't be bothered with "patience" -- for Defense Grid or South Park for your tower defense kick, there's always Final Fantasy Crystal Defenders.%Gallery-68723%

Boom Blox My Wii gathered so many cobwebs this year that it looked like it was a prop from a creepy old Boris Karloff movie. The phenomenon of Wii Fit had me dust it off and breathed some new life into it for a few days, but before long it was relegated back to its hiding space under the couch. That is until Boom Blox slid smoothly into the disc slot. Two days later, I could barely move my right arm due to my newfound obsession, and I still fire it up on a regular basis just to hurl balls at Jenga towers.

Click to enlarge I have to confess this right off the bat: I don't have a high end PC gaming rig. Heck, I don't even have a PC, I use a Mac. Sure, I could load Boot Camp on this thing, but frankly my hard drive is far too crammed with music, photos, and scant room for anything gaming related. I even had to delete my free copy of the "Chess" app to make room for more. However, that is going to have to change. Early this morning I spent some quality hands-on time with Defense Grid: The Awakening. It's a tower defense game that starts out fairly easy, and then quickly gets hard. In fact, I had my ass handed to me pretty squarely when I tried out the "hard" level, and I'm going to have to grab a PC to game on so I can beat the damn thing. They have an Xbox 360 version in the works, but it will come out some time after. Check out the gallery of screenshots below, including two new exclusives, and then hit the break to find out more about the game.%Gallery-30801%

  • GDC08: More XBLA titles on track for summer

Though not as high profile or as long-delayed as Castle Crashers, there are still plenty of titles for XBLA that will be seeing released in the summer. The same Microsoft press release that held the Castle Crashers release info also had other XBLA titles on the summer release list. These games were as follows: Braid, a platformer, Defense Grid: The Awakening, a tower-defense game, Go! Go! Break Steady!, a music rythm game, and finally there's Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Penny-Arcade's RPG adventure game. Whew. With so much good content seeing release this summer (Ninja Gaiden II) here's hoping we'll be able to find time to play these games, as some (if not all) of these hold real promise. The descriptions from the press release after the break.
