Amazon freezes construction of second headquarters in Virginia amid job cuts
Amazon is pausing construction on its second headquarters in Arlington, VA. The company tied the decision to “a reassessment of office needs to account for remote work,” although the move came months after the retailer laid off around 18,000 workers.

Amazon employees will reportedly walk out over climate change inaction
More than 900 Amazon employees plan to protest the company's lack of action around climate change. In an internal petition, the employees have pledged to walk out on September 20th at 11:30AM PT. They've outlined three demands: that Amazon stop donating to politicians and lobbying groups that deny climate change, that the company stop working with oil and gas companies on fossil fuel extraction and that Amazon achieve zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Amazon's Virginia headquarters clears a key political hurdle
Amazon just took a large step closer to establishing a second headquarters in Virginia. The Arlington County Board has voted unanimously in favor of granting Amazon an estimated $51 million incentive package that includes $23 million in cash over 15 years as well as a $28 million, 10-year investment for infrastructure and open space. It's just a small portion of the $481 million the county has ultimately promised (95 percent of which is indirect), but it gets the process underway.
Amazon won't build its HQ2 in NYC after all
Amazon is officially pulling out of its plan to build a second headquarters (aka HQ2) in New York. Reports suggested last week the company was having doubts about the project in Long Island City, Queens, following stern opposition from residents and lawmakers.
Following backlash, Amazon might back out of New York-based HQ 2 plans
Amazon is said to be having second thoughts about its plan to set up a second headquarters in New York City following significant pushback from politicians and residents. Executives have considered alternative options, the Washington Post reports.
Google's Mountain View development plans include affordable housing
Google is still tweaking its Mountain View expansion plans, and the public just got a clearer glimpse of what those changes could entail. The city has published a Google development proposal for the North Bayshore area that would at least partially address the San Francisco Bay Area's housing problems. The 3.12 million square foot project would include up to 8,000 new residential units, 6,600 of which would sit on Google's own land. About 20 percent of those would be marked as affordable housing, including rental units that could be affordable for individuals making $44,000 per year.
Amazon's HQ2 will be split between NYC and Arlington, Virginia
Amazon has announced the locations for its second headquarters following a search process that lasted over a year. As rumored, its new offices will be split between New York City and Arlington, Virginia. The NYC site is coming to Long Island City and will span 4 million square feet and make room for 25,000 new jobs, while Arlington's National Landing will get a similar amount of space and create the same number of jobs. Both sites will have the option of expanding to 8 million square feet in the future and Amazon says each will bring $2.5 billion investments to their regions. Additionally, Nashville will be the home of Amazon's new Operations Center. That site, which will feature a 1 million-square-foot office space, will bring in 5,000 full-time jobs and $230 million in investment, according to Amazon.
Amazon's split HQ2 announcement could happen later today
According to the Wall Street Journal, the location(s) for Amazon's headquarters expansion have been locked down, and will be announced later today. After opening its search process more than a year ago, "people familiar with the matter" say that the rumors are right, with New York City and Arlington, Virginia splitting the expansion. Interestingly, it also suggests that other cities could also get "major"sites, but there's no list of locations or sizes. The HQ2 plan initially came with investments of more than $5 billion and 50,000 new jobs, but clearly splitting that up between a number of cities will change the plan. Hundreds of cities made pitches for the location, opening up data and information about themselves as well as promising tax breaks only to, apparently, come up short. Whatever the final call is, we expect to find out soon, and exactly how long until Amazon's business is being run from somewhere other than just its original Seattle HQ.
Amazon may split new headquarters between two cities
Amazon may have an unexpected solution to its location for a second headquarters: split it in two. A Wall Street Journal source says Amazon has decided to divide HQ2 "evenly" between two locations, with 25,000 jobs each. It's mainly a matter of finding enough technology talent in each location, the insider claimed. It would also reduce the potential for housing and transportation problems that would come when 50,000 people are working at one facility.
Amazon's narrowed 'HQ2' picks include Dallas and NYC
Sorry, Crystal City -- you're not the only one Amazon fancies as it narrows down its choice of location for a second headquarters (aka HQ2). Wall Street Journal tipsters say the internet giant has whittled its finalists down to a "small handful" of cities, including Dallas and New York City. They're not all at the same phase, according to the insiders, but it's clear which cities are getting attention. Talks with other contenders, such as Atlanta, Denver and Toronto, have reportedly "cooled" as of late.
Amazon may place its second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia (updated)
Amazon appears to be close to picking a city for its second headquarters ahead of its end-of-2018 deadline. Washington Post sources said the internet giant had "advanced discussions" about placing the coveted location in Arlington, Virginia's Crystal City neighborhood. The company's talks were "more detailed" than in other locations in the state's northern region, the insiders said, and there's been a "lot of activity." The main real estate developer in Crystal City (JBG Smith) has even taken some buildings off the leasing market, while officials have talked about how they would make an announcement later in November.
Amazon will announce the home of its 'HQ2' this year
We'll know where Amazon will build its second major headquarters before the year ends, company chief Jeff Bezos has revealed during a speech in Washington. The e-commerce giant is apparently almost ready to announce its pick from among the 20 candidates it's considering, and we won't be welcoming 2019 without knowing which city will share the company with Seattle.
Google might finally sell Pixel devices at retail stores
Google has morphed into a serious hardware company. It's set to launch new Pixel 3 phones , Pixel Buds and a wearOS smartwatch, and currently sells lines of Daydream VR headsets, Pixelbooks, Home, Chromecast and Nest products. With all that, it's hard to believe Google has never had a retail store, but that might change soon. It's planning a two-level shop in a 14,000 square foot building at Fulton Market District, near its headquarters in Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Amazon picks 20 finalist cities for its next major HQ
After poring through 238 applications in the US, Canada and Mexico, Amazon has narrowed the list of cities for its next major headquarters to 20 candidates. Most of the centers picked by the Seattle-based company for its "HQ2," like Boston, New York City and Austin already have strong tech sectors. However, there were a few dark horse picks, including Columbus, OH, Raleigh, NC and Toronto, Canada.
Microsoft's Redmond HQ is getting a multi-billion dollar makeover
Microsoft is planning a multi-billion dollar expansion of its Redmond campus, as it looks to add room for an extra 8,000 workers. Over the next five-to-seven years, the company will construct 18 new buildings, add 6.7 million square feet of renovated workspace, and pump $150 million into transportation improvements and recreational facilities alone. The massive project, which spans the equivalent of 180 football fields, will kick into gear in fall of 2018.
Amazon wants US cities to bid for its second major HQ
Amazon is looking for a second company headquarters and wants cities around the US to convince the retail giant why it should take up residency with them. Amazon says it plans to invest more than $5 billion in the new site, called HQ2, while creating up to 50,000 new jobs, and claims the development will bring "tens of billions of dollars in additional investment" to whichever area wins the bid. The company points to its Seattle location as evidence of this, claiming that investments in the site from 2010 to 2016 brought in an "additional $38 billion to the city's economy -- every dollar invested by Amazon in Seattle generated an additional 1.4 dollars for the city's economy overall."
A tour of Xiaomi's headquarters and Mi Home store
Xiaomi was quite a different company when I first visited its headquarters back in August 2011: It only occupied three floors in a small building, the cubicles were tight, security was loose (I literally just walked in almost every time) and people were working crazy long hours almost seven days a week. That was right after the company launched its first device, the original Xiaomi Phone, which set a new bar for affordable flagship smartphones in China. Fast forward to today and you'll find yourself looking at a global brand that has gone well beyond mobile and online, while its latest smartphones -- namely the Mi Note 2 and Mi MIX -- are looking better than ever. To see for yourself, check out our photo tour around Xiaomi's latest headquarters and a strangely familiar-looking Mi Home store nearby.
