Capcom kicked off a sale on games in its Mega Man series through the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops today. The sale coincides with the 27th anniversary of the iconic blue hero as well as the debut of another game on Nintendo's Virtual Console: Mega Man Zero. The Game Boy Advance classic is now available on the Wii U eShop for $7.99. The "Mega Manniversary" sale hacks 50 percent off the price of six Mega Man games until Monday, December 22 at 11:59 a.m. ET (8:59 a.m. PT). On sale are the Game Boy versions of Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3 and Mega Man 4 for 3DS, each down to $1.49. As for Wii U, players can download NES games Mega Man 5 and Mega Man 6 for $2.49 each as well as Mega Man 7 for $3.99. Of course, kids these days may have troubles with these difficult retro platformers. [Image: Capcom]

May's all about Mega Man's Game Boy advance on the 3DS, and that continues this week with Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3. As for the non-Mega games, only one of them is on Wii U this week and it's another retro offering. If you enjoyed all those GBA games from last month, you might want to point your GamePad the way of Wario Land 4. Back on the portable, then, the headline new release is reality-augmenting RPG The Denpa Men 3. If you'd prefer to try before you buy there's a demo version you can check out. Finally... sales! Trine 2: Director's Cut is 50 percent off for three weeks, starting today - that should take it down to $10. Also, Etrian Odyssey 4 and Etrian Odyssey Untold go on sale for a week starting May 12, but what their exact discounts are remains... untold. Well, at least until Nintendo or Atlus pipes up. Mega Man's adventures on Game Boy and Game Boy Color get their 3DS re-releases in May, almost a year after they were first announced. While Capcom's not been in any Rush to get the games onto the Virtual Console, the publisher is asking fans to vote on which they want first of Mega Man 2-5 (Dr Wily's Revenge hit the 3DS back in 2011) and Mega Man Xtreme 1 and 2. The winner will be first out of the door on May 1. [Image: Capcom]

Mega Man 2 sound composer Takashi Tateishi (above, right) has joined Keiji Inafune's team at Concept, and will help score the Kickstarter-funded Mega Man spiritual successor game Mighty No. 9. Composing under the pseudonym "Ogeretsu Kun," Tateishi's works helped define the 8-bit era, and his Mega Man 2 soundtrack is particularly memorable. If you want to sample Tateishi's creations (assuming that they aren't running in a near-constant loop inside your brain already), Wily Stage 1 is a good place to start. Air Man's a classic, too. I'm all about Bubble Man, personally. The Kickstarter project for Mighty No. 9 recently crested $3 million in pledges, and has entered its final 48 hours. In addition to previously announced releases for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC, and Mac, Mighty No. 9 will also hit the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 if funding reaches $3.3 million by the campaign's conclusion.

Capcom's ongoing quest to make all of the original NES Mega Man soundtracks legally available in the US continues this week, with the release of Mega Man 2's official soundtrack over at the Capcom store. The 42 track album (!) is available digitally for $8.95.Mega Man 2's soundtrack was composed by Takashi Tateishi, who also composed the music for the arcade version of Willow and U.N. Squadron, among other things. His work on Mega Man 2 was credited under the alias "Ogeretsu Kun," a practice which was not entirely uncommon for Capcom at the time. Additional contributions to the soundtrack were also made by Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae. In related news, the music from Dr. Wily's castle is still the hottest jam.

With the delay of Rayman Legends, today's release of Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage would be the Wii U's only retail game in February ... except it's exclusive to the eShop. So it's only kind of the only retail game this month.Things are a bit busier on the 3DS, with the arrival of the Etrian Odyssey IV demo and the Virtual Console release of Mega Man 2, the best Mega Man game.

Mega Man turns 25 this year, and to celebrate Capcom is amassing the music from the series' 10 main games into a single collection, which will be available for ¥14,700 ($183.56) on September 19, provided you're fluent enough to traverse the exceedingly Japanese wilds of E-Capcom.Yes, sadly there have been no announcements regarding a North American release of the collection, which contains the NES and PlayStation soundtracks for Mega Man 1 through 6, as well as the jams from Mega Man 7, 8, 9 and 10, which don't have alternate versions. Here's hoping there's some kind of support structure for those discs inside of that E-Tank canister.

In addition to the Mega Man 9 and 10 DLC packs listed as discounted in this week's PSN update, you can also get ... Mega Man 9 and 10. And Mega Mans 1-3. Though they didn't show up on Sony's official list of updates, the entire Mega Man catalog on PS3 is on sale this week, half off. The PSOne Imports versions of Mega Man 1, 2, and 3 (based on the Japanese PlayStation re-releases) are now available for $2.99 each. Mega Man 9 and 10 sell for $4.99 each this week, with DLC bundles an extra $2.99. Given Capcom's recent attitude toward Mega Man, we'd love to see what happened if these discounts led to a massive sales boost.

Anxious to beef up your iOS device's game library? Capcom's slashed the price on eight of its games, offering each for $.99 this weekend only. Here's the list: Resident Evil 4 (previously $4.99) 1942: First Strike (previously $1.99) Mega Man II (previously $2.99) Dark Void Zero (previously $2.99) Cash Cab (previously $4.99) Cash Cab: Las Vegas (previously $1.99) Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? 2010 (previously $1.99) Who Wants To Be A Millionaire 2010 (previously $1.99) If we had to suggest one, we'd have to go with Dark Void Zero, but if you're looking to maximize the savings, you can't go wrong with Resident Evil 4. Happy bargain hunting!

  • Capcom's titles go on sale for 99 cents

Good news everyone! Capcom's putting some of its iPhone titles on sale this weekend, so head on over to the App Store to pick up Resident Evil 4, 1942: First Strike, Mega Man II, Dark Void Zero, or a few of Capcom's other licensed games for just a penny short of a buck. Not all of the titles are on sale, so no luck with Street Fighter IV or Phoenix Wright, but there are some good options in there anyway. I'm especially excited for Mega Man II, since that was such a favorite of mine as a kid. It turns out that being patient on the App Store can save you a lot of money, and even bigger developers are learning that going cheap, if only for a limited time, can significantly raise apps in the rankings.

Gameloft isn't the only company having a sale this week -- Capcom has also put most of its iPhone titles on sale for Comic-Con: You can pick up the great Phoenix Wright for just $2.99, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Dark Void Zero and Mega Man 2 for just 99 cents, or Street Fighter IV for $6.99. Good set of deals to choose from there. I think that big EA sale a while back set a precedent for price drops like this -- a nice discount on a game quite a few people have been waiting to play can definitely send it catapulting into the top lists on the App Store. Phoenix Wright is definitely worth $3 if you've never played it before, so that title specifically should really benefit from a sale like this.

We already recommend Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney without hesitation, but now we're even quicker to do so. In honor of Comic-Con (for some reason), Capcom has temporarily marked down the iPhone version of Phoenix Wright, along with several other iPhone and even iPad games. We suggest you take that! ... opportunity and pick up Phoenix Wright for just $2.99. Other highlights include the iPad and iPhone versions of Resident Evil 4 for $2.99 each, Street Fighter 4 for $6.99 and Dark Void Zero for just .99. Mega Man 2 is also just .99, if you want to hate your iPhone. See the full list of discounted games after the break. Capcom notes that Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil Degeneration, Resident Evil 4 and Phoenix Wright will go back to regular price after July 25, but offers no expiration date for the other sales. %Gallery-93496%

You know, I told myself (and others) that I wasn't going to do this. But I can't ignore it. Today is the day that Mega Man makes his glorious return. Like a modern V-day, the blue bomber is coming home and completing his duty of pleasing the hardcore enthusiasts. With a rarely-seen level of excitement and anticipation being dispersed by the gaming community, we might as well have Mega Man slowly ride the streets through a ticker-tape parade seated on top of a convertible. I didn't want to stir the pot by declaring what the best Mega Man games are due to some sacred cows surrounding the topic. But ignoring honesty for the sake of peace and comfort would be committing a great disservice to us all. We decided to take a look at the highlights of the Mega Man series. Any title in the expansive universe was acceptable. But let's be honest: there's only going to be games from the original and X series (as if Mega Man Star Force stood a chance). And with any luck, today's release will find its way onto this list. Here's a heads-up: you might not agree with these choices. I did my best to provide arguments of why every game belongs on this list and in the order that it does. In the interests of intelligent debate, please do the same in your rebuttals. The Mega Man love-in continues on the Japanese Virtual Console, with perhaps the most beloved entry in the extraordinarily prolific franchise -- the one that spawned "Okkusenman." The only other game on the Virtual Console today: Chase H.Q., Taito's police pursuit racer. Rockman 2 (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Chase H.Q. (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points) The relatively light VC release schedule (for Japan) is ameliorated by the fact that one of the games is Mega Man 2. It's also bolstered rather significantly by the WiiWare releases, which include both Alien Crush Returns and Space Invaders Get Even!, two games that oh man we are seriously dying for. Alien Crush Returns (1 player [up to 4 online], 800 Wii Points) Space Invaders Get Even! (1 player, 500 Wii Points)

By way of its staff blog, Capcom USA has revealed that Mega Man 9, its retro revival of the classic series, will be available through Nintendo's WiiWare service as soon as this September. Make sure the ceiling is high enough before you jump for joy, lest you hurt your head. Mega Man 2 for the Virtual Console, which was posted on Europe's VC back in December 2007, is also scheduled to appear in the States in "early September." As for its predecessor, the original Mega Man, Capcom has announced that it will release the game in North America ... tomorrow! The latest ESRB update confirms two wonderful things that we knew were happening at some point: first, that Mega Man and the sublime Mega Man 2 would be on the way to our Virtual Console soon; second, that Earthworm Jim would make an appearance. Even more interesting -- Earthworm Jim has been rated for a while, but the latest update includes a rating for Earthworm Jim 2 on the Wii! Strangely, the new rating is for the Wii and Genesis versions, while another rating is already on the site for the Genesis game. Now it's got two E ratings! It's extra appropriate for families.Other interesting new games found in ratings: Professor Heinz Wolff's Gravity, an Incredible Machine/Crayon Physics hybrid; Potpourii, a matching puzzle game; and Midnight Pool and Midnight Bowling from Gameloft.

In an effort to help build anticipation for Mega Man 9, and probably to prepare new players who don't realize how brutal Mega Man games can be, Capcom announced that the first two games in the series will be released on the Virtual Console in the two months leading up to the September release of the new WiiWare game. Rockman will be released this month, according to both Capcom and Nintendo, whose VC lineup page has been updated to reflect this surprise announcement. Rockman 2: Dr. Wily no Nazo (Mega Man 2: The Riddle of Dr. Wily) will come out in August. Both of these games have been out in Europe for quite some time, so the real surprise isn't that they're being released in Japan, it's why they haven't been released yet -- and it would seem that we have our answer now. Capcom was waiting until they could start promoting Mega Man 9.
