DJI's new drone, the Mavic Mini, is a palm-sized device that's so light it doesn't require FAA registration. DJI hasn't officially announced Mavic Mini, but it hasn't done a great job of keeping it a secret, either. Today, a listing on the online retailer Newegg's Canadian site confirmed rumors about the tiny drone and leaked photos.

It's not just British companies succumbing to large-scale payment data breaches in recent weeks. RiskIQ and Volexity have discovered that hackers inserted Magecart card skimming code into Newegg's payment page between August 14th and September 18th, intercepting credit card data and sending it to a server with a similar-looking domain.

Supreme Court ruling lets states collect sales tax from online purchases

    06.21.2018

It's not unheard of for internet retailers to collect sales tax regardless of where their customers are located, but they might not have much choice before long. The US Supreme Court has ruled that states can force online stores to collect sales tax, reversing a 1992 precedent that let companies avoid sales tax when they didn't have a physical presence. South Dakota (with the support of 41 other states, two territories and DC) had taken action against Newegg, Overstock and Wayfair after enacting a tax collection law in 2016, arguing that the presence rule was "arbitrary." The state put enforcement of the law on hold until it could definitively establish that it was constitutional.

Ever since Facebook Messenger started allowing businesses to chat with their customers (and vice versa), it's been used as a means of customer support. A number of different companies have already started doing so -- Hyatt, Sprint, Zulily and Everlane among others. Now online e-commerce site Newegg is in on it too. The retailer said in a statement today that you can simply strike up a conversation with a representative via its Facebook Page. You can also just search for "Newegg" within Messenger.

  • Google, Dropbox, Canon and others team up to disarm future patent trolls

Patent litigation from non-participating entities (casually known as "patent trolls") is the bane of a technology firm's legal department. Fighting patent lawsuits from firms that subsist completely on licensing and legal action is a frustrating waste of resources, and one that often stifles innovation indirectly. Now, a new partnership between Canon, Dropbox, Google, Asana, SAP and Newegg hopes to cut off would-be patent trolls at the knees. It's called the License on Transfer Network (LOT), and it's a patent-licensing agreement that neuters a patent's potential for litigation before prospective trolls can exploit it.

High School StarLeague organizes esports competitions for high school students in North America, and this season it's offering a scholarship of more than $20,000 for the winners of its finals round in June. Twitch and Newegg each contributed $10,000 to High School StarLeague for the scholarship. "Through tournaments and scholarships, we plan to prepare our aspiring and talented gamers for the professional gaming scene, while simultaneously ensuring success in their education and character development outside of the game," High School StarLeague COO Jesse Wang said in a press release. Games included in the tournament are League of Legends, Dota 2 and StarCraft 2. The High School StarLeague 2013-2014 finals take place in June in Southern California, and they'll be broadcast live on Twitch. [Image: High School StarLeague]

Update: At the time of writing Newegg had the bundle at $450, but it seems that time has gone and it's now $500. However, it still comes with both Titanfall and Forza bundled in. If you're searching for Easter Xbox One deals, you might want to try a Newegg hunt. A new $450 $500 deal chucks in two games rather than one: For a limited time you can get the console with both a boxed copy of Titanfall and a download code for Forza Motorsport 5. The system's regular price remains $500, although the Microsoft Store is still offering the Titanfall bundle for $450 - that "limited time" offer has been going for nearly a month.

  • Buy Thief at Newegg, get free Domino's (because, pizza)

Pizza is great. Everyone loves pizza, even thieves-for-hire. In fact, a well-known byproduct of being a kleptomaniac is an insatiable craving for carbohydrates. A Thief promotion at Newegg capitalizes on this by granting all who pick up a PC copy with a $10 coupon for Domino's Pizza. Enter the promo code SENTFPO during checkpoint for an additional ten percent off. Thankfully, Newegg has extended some sales love to Thief's other platforms too. Grabbing a copy of Thief on PS4, Xbox One, PS3 or Xbox 360 before March 3 nets a gift card good for $5. Thief, which launched this week, is a game our review said is "best when it sticks to the involving, slow-paced stealth that made its ancestor such a tense affair." Our review adds, "Thief succeeds when it's quiet, fingers reaching out and almost – almost – touching an irresistible spread of glittering prizes." [Image: Eidos Montreal]

  • Amazon rival Newegg heading to the UK in March

One of the busiest online electronics stores in the US is about to open for business in Europe, including the UK. Newegg expects to start trading at the end of March, although we're told it'll be a relatively soft launch until the company feels more confident about its shipping and supply lines. The retailer, which is especially well known for its PC and component sales, claims to have 25 million registered users and 8.5 million subscribers to its regular email bulletin -- numbers that look set to grow if the company can find a way to stand amidst competition like Amazon, eBuyer and the British PC-specialist Scan.

  • Newegg's $50 Premier is like Amazon Prime, but without the video streaming

While Amazon's debating whether or not it should hike Prime subscription fees in the US, now its decision may have to take into consideration a potential competitor. This morning, Newegg introduced Premier, a $50 shipping service that aims to cope with the likes of Amazon Prime. For that yearly fee, Newegg promises to get stuff to your doorstep in three days or less, as well as a number of other benefits including no restocking fees, free returns and dedicated customer service. You will, however, miss out on the Instant Video streaming offered through Prime, but this also means you'll end up saving $29 per year -- which is something that could make sense to folks who are already subscribed to Netflix. Or, there's always Newegg's free option, Super Eggsaver; just be prepared to wait a lot longer for your online purchases to arrive.

If you're among those buying Sony's brand new home console tomorrow and know you will buy-in on PlayStation Plus for a lengthy period of time, then Sony wants to give you more PSN credit. Those that pick up a brand new PS4 and a year-long subscription to PlayStation Plus tomorrow will receive a $10 PlayStation Store voucher. The $10 coupon is separate from the one packaged with the system, which accompanies a 30-day trial of PlayStation Plus. The deal is only good at physical GameStop and Best Buy locations as well as online through Newegg and is only valid tomorrow, the day the PlayStation 4 is no longer a hunk of hardware you can only read about, but one you get to hold. If you haven't done enough reading about it though, we have plenty of information to prepare you to be a PS4 owner, including our review of the hardware itself.

Newegg is running a promotion right now offering a $10 gift card alongside the purchase of a PS4 DualShock 4 controller, or an Xbox One controller. The DualShock 4 listing promises a ship date of November 15, in line with the PS4 launch date; the Xbox One controller doesn't look like it'll ship until November 30, however, after the November 22 launch date for the Xbox One. Shipping will cost extra, as well. The DualShock 4, the latest iteration in Sony's line of controllers, features a two-point touchpad, built-in light bar and speaker, and six-axis motion-sensing controls. The Xbox One controller improves upon the popular Xbox 360 standard with a new d-pad, rumble motors located within the trigger buttons and an infrared beacon that plays nice with the new version of Kinect.

Dear rig builder, before you go shopping for your next PSU, Digital Storm would like a word. The company's new line of Vanquish PCs is aimed at gamers who want the price of a self-build, but without the worry that they've mistakenly jammed a 12V ATX cable into a Blu-Ray drive. The base unit offers up an AMD FX-4300 with 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, a Radeon HD 7750 and Windows 7 for $699 -- just $38 more than the company claims you could snag those unassembled parts on NewEgg. Alongside the professional build, Digital Storm will provide lifetime in-house tech support and a three-year warranty, so if you'd like to learn more, there's PR and video after the break.

  • Windows 8 sales have been 'slow going,' Microsoft said to be blaming OEMs

We've already heard about Windows RT's "modest" beginning, and now there's talk full-blown Windows 8 ain't flying off the shelves either. According to MS aficionado Paul Thurrott and one of his "most trusted sources," uptake of the new OS isn't hitting Redmond's targets, with the blame being put on OEMs and their "inability to deliver" more inspiring hardware with better availability. Some corroboration of Windows 8's tricky birth comes from Merle McIntosh, senior VP of product management of NewEgg, who says the online retailer was "prepared for an explosion" at launch, but that sales have "been slow going" to date. However, he says that early sales figures shouldn't be compared to Windows 7, since that OS arrived to "solve a Vista problem." He expects Windows 8 to gain traction in Q2 2013 when "pricing normalizes," which would certainly help to temper any launch frustrations.
