Synchronica acquires Nokia's messaging service, six million of you care
Nokia's going through some pretty awkward public growing pains. After setting its Symbian OS out to pasture in favor of Microsoft's own mobile solution, the self-proclaimed world leader in mobility is gutting even more of its old software house -- this time, its Operator Branded Messaging (OBM) service gets cut loose. Sold to mobile developer Synchronica, the white label OBM software that combines email and IM clients won't be pushing daises anytime soon thanks to a six million strong user base and continued support from Nokia Series 40 devices. Also bundled up in the sale are 250 of Nokia's former employees, as well as source code, and ten existing contracts the company hopes will lead to a "strong foothold in the...North American operator market." The deal is a sure shot in the messaging arm for the UK-based developer and is destined to become yet another footnote in Nokia's pre-Windows Phone past.

No idea what this is but the Twitterverse has an inkling that we'll see Ovi Maps integrated with Nokia Messaging. Jury's still out on hardware like, say, the N8-00 -- though as the rumored flagship S^3 device we'd expect its reveal to be a bit more formal than a countdown.
Nokia Messaging for social networks hits beta, brings Twitter, and leaves out the N900
See, this is what we were saying. It's not that we're not excited about Maemo, or that we hate S60, or even that we dislike it when a company like Nokia builds a free messaging app that integrates social networks like Facebook (and now Twitter) into the handset experience. It's just that Nokia has just built an app that only works on the N97, N97 Mini and the 5800, leaving the company's quasi-flagship handset the N900 out in the cold. The new app can upload pictures and videos, integrates with email and the dialer, and pushes Facebook and Twitter updates live to the homescreen. It also serves as a all-too-timely example of how hard it is to support two operating systems at once. Alright, we're done preaching, time to fire up the N97 and tell some people about our day. New Nokia Messaging beta adds IM capabilities, E75 gets first dibs
Nokia Messaging represents Espoo's premiere email experience -- so premiere, in fact, that the company eventually plans to charge for it on some of its devices -- and to help makes it just a little bit more awesome than it already is, they've now started adding in instant messaging capability. The new Nokia Messaging - E75 IM Beta (yes, that's the full official name) offered by Nokia Beta Labs rocks compatibility with Yahoo Messenger and Ovi -- more services are expected to be compatible in the future -- and appears to serve up pretty much all the features you'd expect of a modern mobile IM client, including background notification, multiple conversation management, status control, and chat log save capability. So far, only the E75's compatible, but Nokia's imploring folks to stay tuned to Beta Labs for updates on when they'll open it up to other devices.
Nokia Messaging graduates to S60 5th Edition
Well, if you're the proud owner of a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic -- which runs S60 5th edition, in case you don't keep up with that jazz -- you can now join the mobile pioneers using this free -- at least for now, for some -- service. So, if you've never heard of Nokia Messaging, it is an email aggregator that will connect to 10 different webmail accounts and put the mail all in one place on your handset. Nokia Messaging support thousands of email providers, includes support for HTML, Windows Live Hotmail, and can be configured via the app on the phone or from the web. So far, so fantastic, and it is a grand thing when a beta app graduates to the real world. Nokia Email goes gold
After a several month-long beta, Nokia's souped-up email app -- appropriately called Email -- is getting booted out of Beta Labs and going gold as part of the Messaging suite. The company is touting that the final product includes tons of changes that came from feedback through the beta cycle, and it'll be going live first in Australia, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom and Venezuela -- in other words, you good folks will now be paying for the opportunity to use it. The remainder of the world gets to keep using it for free until it's commercialized in their locale -- which, if you're in the US and Nokia Music is any indication, might be a long time off.
Nokia Maps gets upgraded, Messaging hits most devices
The news is flowing hot and heavy from Barcelona, and the latest succulent tidbits to land in our laps are these. First up, a fresh version of Nokia Maps is on tap, which includes "a number of new features such as high-resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks for 216 cities and terrain maps, as well as a new route overview during routing and during Drive, the purchasable turn-by-turn car navigation guidance." Furthermore, users will find new options such as access to real time information (camera alerts, safety spots, traffic information, etc.) and Wcities event guides that give real time information for events and movies in over 450 destinations. Next is Nokia Messaging -- which is bringing popular IM services to the majority of Nokia handsets -- and Mail on Ovi, which enables PC users to "create and access Ovi email accounts as well as gain cross access to other Ovi services with just a single sign-on account."
