When Soldier of Fortune: Payback blows off assorted limbs this November (as seen in the above video), it won't be doing it Down Under. The game has been denied classification by Australia's Office of Film & Literature Classification. Apparently, being "denied classification" -- while great if you're a genre-bending singer-songwriter with a fresh, bold sound all your own -- means that you're banned if you're a video game. But why, OFLC? Why? Well, according to The Melbourne Herald-Sun, "(The decision was based on) the different ways a player could maim and injure (other characters)." Well, good job, Australia, you've protected your people from violence. Hopefully you can look back at this moment the next time Crocodile Dundee cuts off a man's head with a Bowie knife.[Via GamePolitics]

Rumors of a new Soldier of Fortune game have been confirmed by Activision. Speaking to GameSpot, the publisher said that the shooter is "being developed in Minnesota" and would be released on their Activision Value label. You know who's not in Minnesota? Madison, Wisconsin-based Raven Software, who developed the previous two Soldier of Fortune titles. Former Raven employee Kenn Hoekstra posted on Blue's News forums that that there was a new developer. The only clue we have comes from an anonymous source via Firing Squad, who states that it will be developed by Cauldron, who previously created History Channel: Civil War FPS for Activision Value in 2006.No other details are available, though all signs (especially that glowing, neon sign that says Activision Value) point to a disappointing, budget-priced revisit to a quality franchise.

After disappearing from the gaming scene following 2002's Double Helix, the Soldier of Fortune franchise has finally been revived for Soldier of Fortune: Pay Back on the Playstation 3, the 360, and the PC. While not officially announced, pages have gone up for the game at EBGames and the guys from WorthPlaying say that they've gotten confirmation about the games existence from one of their shadowy sources.Supposedly set for a November 2007 release, the game will be stepping into dangerous times with the recent Manhunt 2 rating debacle. Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix received flak back in the day for being able to slowly cut off the face of a dead enemy and watch their brains slide out onto the floor, not to mention the variety of other things like the ability to disembowel people and generally rip them to shreds in horrific ways. The game is being developed by one of Activision's internal studios who's previous titles have been the budget Cabela's hunter games. Not exactly a high pedigree, but we should see some more about the game at E3 (especially if that November release date is real). We'll let you know as soon as we find out any more info!
