Happy Tax Day! It's April 15th, and in America, that means that the air is filled with the sound of screaming taxpayers who waited until the last moment to file their returns. For those who may have filed early and might have even received a tax refund check, we offer this distraction to cover up the sight of your next door neighbor in his backyard shredding documents. Apple products are probably more popular now than they've ever been, so we'd like to know what you'd spend your hypothetical (or real) tax refund check on. Answer our poll, see what other TUAW readers are lusting for, and leave us a comment if your favorite choice isn't in the list. %Poll-44608%

I've had keyboards and mice on my mind for the last few days so I thought I'd see what you all are using. To get the poll rolling I asked a few of my colleagues here at TUAW HQ to chime in, too.David Chartier: iMac - Apple Pro Keyboard with a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 4.0. Most comfortable.mouse.ever. Sometimes I whip out the Mighty Mouse for multimedia/time-based work though. MacBook - built in keyboard and usually the touchpad, though I bring along the Mighty Mouse from my iMac mainly because it packs in a bag easily.Alex Wollenschlaeger:I use the keyboard on my 12" PowerBook (one of the main reasons I got another PowerBook over a MacBook) and a Microsoft optical mouse. I've used other mice in the past and I've always come back to Microsoft ones. They just feel right. I carry it around with me everywhere because I don't like trackpads too much. Though the new scrolling feature goes a long way to rectifying that.Scott McNulty: I use the built-in in stuff on my MacBook. On my iMac I have Apple's included keyboard and a Logitech S 530 Laser mouse.Dan Lurie:When I'm not out and about with my PowerBook, it sits on an iCurve at my desk and I use the standard white Apple keyboard and Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer (which I love, but I need to get in a wireless version). I'm actually in the market for a new keyboard due some wrist pain I've been having, so I've been looking at the GoldTouch Mac from KeyOvation. As for me? On my home and office desktops I use the Matias OS X keyboard. The symbols are great for me since I always forget where they are. The extra control key and the caps-lock key being out of my way is a blessing and I really love the action on it. I'm a big fan of tactile keys - and this one is quieter than a typical tactile keyboard, which makes hubby happy, but it's still "clicky" enough to make me happy. My mouse is a 5-button, rockin' tilt-scroll Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer, which I would be lost without. When I'm on the PowerBook I generally stick with the built-in keyboard and trackpad since I'm typically on-the-go and it's just easier that way.Hmmm... 4 out of 5 bloggers agree that what Microsoft lacks in the OS department they make up for with their mice, which rule. We don't agree on much around here so that's about as resounding of an endorsement as you're going to get from us.Now it's your turn -- What mouse and keyboard are you using with your Mac(s) these days?

I know the suspense has been killing you. Here are the informal, unofficial, thoroughly unscientific results of the equally informal, unofficial, thoroughly unscientific poll in which I asked you whether the SMC Firmware update resolved your MacBook's "Random Shutdown Syndrome" (RSS) -- assuming your MacBook had RSS to begin with. Of those who actually have a MacBook (64% of you who took the poll), only 10% of you have reported that the Firmware Update resolved your problem, with 6% of playing coy and waiting it out before confirming your results. 2% of that 64% group insisted the update was of no help and a whopping 40% were thrilled to report their MacBook has yet to never exhibited signs of Random Shutdown Syndrome at all. Funny, that, since owners without problems are typically silent whereas those with problems are so loud they appear to be a heartier crows than they really are.So what does this mean? Nothing. There is absolutely no scientific value to the above numbers at all. It's a random sampling taking from an already skewed respondent pool. Except that we really really love polls and at least 3420 of you love them to.The poll is still open - for those of you who can't get enough of clicking those little radio buttons. Go ahead and knock yourself out.

I'm seeing mixed results in the field as to whether or not SMC Firmware Update 1.1 actually resolves, once and for all, the Random Shutdown Syndrome (RSS) affecting many MacBooks, but more than a handful of comments on the original post indicate that it has solved their problem. Now that 24 hours has passed, I'm curious about what the rest of you are seeing. So, MacBook owners, did the firmware update work for you or are you still struggling to keep your MacBook powered up? Did SMC Firmware Update 1.1 fix your MacBook's Random Shutdown Syndrome (RSS)? Yes! My MacBook is up and running and staying that way! Nope. I expect it will shut down again before I even submit my answer to this poll Too soon to tell. I only experienced RSS a few times so I'm waiting a bit longer to say whether it's fixed or not. Random Shutdown Syndrome? What's that? My MacBook works just fine, thank you. I don't have a MacBook. Is there a firmware update that will turn my aging Dual USB iBook into a MacBook?
