Not everyone who watched the original Twin Peaks series can remember much more than a woman with a log and something about owls, but the title inarguably made a dent in the popular culture. Now, after a handful of movies, novels released and a follow-up TV series in 2017, the iconic horror drama is returning as a VR game. Twin Peaks VR will take you to the Red Room, a surreal place from the original series where people talk backwards and a doppelganger can hunt you down. The title is produced by Collider Games and Showtime — which aired Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017 — together with original series creator David Lynch.

Nintendo had a bonafide smash on its hands with the NES Classic. And it looks like the SNES mini console will fly off of store shelves just as quickly. But it's not the only company looking to cash in on your nostalgia. Nowadays, there are reboots of TV shows like Twin Peaks and MST3K. Oh, and how about Netflix's Stranger Things, a series that's basically a love letter to the 80s? These are all examples of nostalgia products done right. But not everything we've seen in recent years has been as great as you would have hoped. Because, seriously, do you really want one of the Furbys pictured above watching you sleep? And who would be caught dead toting around a Tamagotchi in 2017? You know what, maybe that is you, and who are we to judge? But if you ask us, these 10 things probably took our retro obsession a little too far.

After putting together any home-theater setup, big or small, there's always one last question: What are you going to watch? Our editors have already opened up about some of the games they're playing and what they're listening to, but this edition of IRL is all about video. Sometimes we'll talk about the latest series we've binge watched, or maybe a new movie that you just can't miss. Today we have a little bit of everything as one editor revisits the roots of his anime fandom, another powers through Jenji Kohan's latest release on Netflix and, finally, one of us is watching Jurassic Park for the very first time.

You can breathe easy now. Showtime might have missed its 2016 target for the Twin Peaks revival, but it's still full steam ahead for the series' creators. In fact, you won't have to wait that much longer for its premiere: the cult classic's new season will begin at 9PM on May 21, 2017. The two-episode premiere will be two-hours long, followed by 16 more hour-long episodes. If you have Showtime On Demand, though, you'll have access to episodes 1 to 4 from the start.

In its bid to deliver high quality programming, Sky often inks deals with US networks to bring popular TV shows to the UK. Its tie-up with HBO, for example, allows millions of Brits to watch new episodes of Game of Thrones and Veep soon after they air in America. Today, the UK broadcaster announced that it's adding more high-quality programming to the Sky Atlantic roster after it agreed a wide ranging deal with paid TV network Showtime to air the Twin Peaks revival, coming in 2017, and older shows like Californication and Dexter.

"Holorama" is an art installation that revives the likes of The Big Lebowski, Twin Peaks and, yes, Jason and the Argonauts with some transparent screens, a mirror and lovingly handcrafted dioramas. After delicately video-editing the main actors (or skeletons) from their original format, they're transformed into ethereal ghosts, then projected in black space. Thanks to some clever tiny furniture positioning, the scene comes to life and, well, the results are magical. Watch below.

  • 'Calendula' wants to be a weird mix of 'Twin Peaks' and 'PT'

Why would anyone play a game that doesn't want to be played? It's a question with an answer, though it may be buried within the spastic, terrifying scenes of Calendula, the game in development at Blooming Buds, a small studio in Madrid, Spain. Developers describe Calendula as a game with roots in experimental art and classic horror, taking inspiration from famed thriller TV series Twin Peaks and PT, Hideo Kojima's spooky demo for the PlayStation 4. Designer Aleix Garrido says that Calendula aims to break classic video game conventions and the fourth wall in one weird blow. It all begins with a question posed by Calendula itself: How do you play a game that doesn't want to be played?

Ready for a slice of pie and a cup of damn fine coffee? Twin Peaks creators David Lynch and Mark Frost sure are, as they're reviving the show for a third season that's due to air on Showtime in 2016. The duo announced as much via Twitter with a characteristically-vague trailer (see it below). In it, Laura Palmer stands in the red room, stares into the camera, and snaps her fingers. Sure! At least someone isn't speaking backwards, right? Variety says it isn't a remake of the original series, but rather a modern day continuation of storylines from the second season. Lynch is signed on to direct the entire season, which is said to be nine episodes. And no, there's no word yet if Detective Dale Cooper (Kyle McLachlan) is returning, but when handed such pleasant news, it seems wrong to immediately demand more. As Coop put it, "Every day, once a day, give yourself a present." We've already indulged.

Penn & Teller's old UK show Fool Us is going to be re-aired in the US this summer on CW, while NFL action starts to wind back up with the start of preseason football. Finally, PS4 gamers can enjoy a better-looking version of last year's hit The Last of Us with a remastered version hitting shelves tomorrow, and on Netflix season four of The Killing arrives Friday morning. Check after the break for a list of what's new this week plus a few trailers, and drop a note in the comments if you see any highlights we've missed.

Let's be honest, as much as we all like to play film snob, we're thinking more of you watch Family Ties, Star Trek and Cheers than the works of Bergman and Kurosawa. As long as that's the case, perhaps the pain of losing Criterion's content to Hulu Plus will be eased by word of a new deal with CBS bringing a slew of its older shows including the aforementioned plus Twin Peaks, The Twilight Zone and newer-but-not-new shows like Medium to the service for two years starting in early April. No word on how big of a check the now-20 million strong Netflix had to cut to pull this off, but the deal is non-exclusive, so you could see all of these on Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, Redbox or... you get the picture.
