HTC will intro half as many smartphones this year
HTC may have taken a bolder approach in the smartphone world with its new U Ultra and U Play, but it's decided to play it safe with its roadmap for the rest of the year. After today's launch event in Taipei, I caught up with President of Smartphone and Connected Devices Business, Chialin Chang, who confirmed that HTC will only be releasing six to seven smartphones this year. While that's a drastic cut from last year's eleven to twelve models, he claims this has so far allowed the company to focus on its smartphones' core features, in a bid to put up a better fight against other brands.
Call of Duty: Ghosts tops this week's UK charts
There are no frights in the UK's Halloween charts, where Call of Duty: Ghosts is of course the new number one. That said, there is one surprising presence in its retail showing: Behind a 62 percent share of the sales on Xbox 360 and 34 percent on PS3, the PS4 comes in as the game's third best-selling platform at 3 percent - beating the Wii U. Activision released the game's PS4 version ahead of the console's UK launch on November 29, and you'd have to say it's performed well for something that can't even be played yet. It's not all sunshine and lollipops for Activision, as retail sources told MCV that Ghosts' UK launch sales are 50 percent down on last year's Black Ops 2. if MCV's figures are accurate, they're likely to do with the impending next-gen launches. We'll see just how much they account for when the Xbox One and PS4 arrive later this month. As for what's going on beneath Ghosts, former no. 1 Assassin's Creed 4 tumbles to third, while Battlefield 4 holds steady in second. Meanwhile, the relatively early arrival of Professor Layton fails to enchant the top ten, with concluding chapter Azran Legacy debuting in 13th.
Nintendo Wii U now available to pre-order in the UK from Amazon
People here in the US of A have been able to pre-order Nintendo's latest gaming console since shortly after the Japanese company wrapped up its NYC event yesterday, and now it's time for UK folks to do the same -- at least through Amazon. The online retail giant's now offering both the Basic and Premium units on its site for £249 and £299, respectively, or there is also a top-of-the-line bundle which includes ZombieU that's priced at £329. Regardless of the Wii U route you choose to take, be sure to mark November 30th on your calendar as the date to expect that trademark brown box to show up at your doorstep.
Dual GamePad support won't be coming to Nintendo Wii U until 'well after launch'
Contrary to what we'd heard, it seems as if you and your friends won't be able to enjoy some of that dual GamePad play on Nintendo's upcoming Wii U -- at least not until some time after the novel gaming console launches later "this holiday." During an interview with Gamasutra, Reggie Fils-Aime (Nintendo of America President) said, "Games need to be built that can take advantage of the two GamePad controllers" and that "it's going to be well after launch for those game experiences to come to life." According to Fils-Aine, developers will have to first place all their focus on "asymetric gameplay," before eventually adding support for two GamePads on their titles. Notably, the revelation comes shortly after he himself confirmed the Wii U GamePad won't be featuring any multi-touch capabilities. Not all is lost, however, you'll just have to wait it out a little longer than expected, or make due with one of those Wii remotes you have laying around in the meantime.
Motorola announces RAZR Developer Edition with unlocked bootloader for Europe, US variant on the way
Promises. You can either let technicalities get in your way of fulfilling them, or you can just find a way to keep them. Motorola, it seems, wants to do the latter. Sorta. In a new blog post, the outfit announced the Motorola RAZR Developer Edition, a fully unlockable version of the handset destined for European shores. The announcement didn't come with a release date, but pointed towards a (currently non-functional) pre-order page for the CM7 hungry. Don't fret, America -- Motorola's thinking of you as well, mentioning that a similar developer device will be available in the United States through MOTODEV, the firm's developer network. ASUS U / UX Series laptops hands-on
Maybe it's just because we visited that heart-stealing Eee PC 1008HA right before these buggers, but for whatever reason, ASUS' new U / UX lineup just didn't seem as sexy in person as they did in the press shots. We will say, however, that the light-up trackpad was one of the more whiz-bang things we've seen in awhile, though we're still skeptical of its actual utility. Curiously enough, one of the models on display even lacked letters on the chiclet style keyboard, and while we know good and well it won't ship like that, we were kind of fond of it... in a weird, nerd-type way. At any rate, feel free to dig in to the gallery below, and be sure to mind the ASUS rep waxing the fingerprints from the bezel -- you'll be doing lots of that should you select one of these.%Gallery-46607%
ASUS announces stylish U/UX series ultra-thin laptops
Looking to add some allure to its portable lineup -- as if a model named Lamborghini wasn't enough -- ASUS has announced the U and UX series of ultra-thin laptops, expected to launch sometime in Q2. Both feature an illuminated chiclet keyboard and auto-adjusting LED backlit display. The U series also features a 15.6-inch glossy LCD and a touchpad that uses progressively fading lights to follow your fingertips. Under the hood, there's an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, NVIDIA GeForce G105M, up to 500GB HDD, and Altec Lansing speakers with SRS true surround sound. We don't have nearly as much information on the UX, unfortunately, but we do know it's sporting a slot-in optical disc drive. Full press release after the break.
Super-Talent Pico USB drives: lose 'em even faster
Score, another "world's smallest" USB drive. Never seen one of those before. Super-Talent's latest Pico drives are mighty small though, and if one of you is somehow running the Tiny USB Hall of Records, it measures just 1.5 by .5 inches and holds 8GB in swivel, retractable, and waterproof versions. $35, should be out now.[Via Pocket-lint]
Suffering Through Child's Play in WoW
I've been trying to find a way to put this, because it's really just a rant, but Dekeon from Dunemaul does a pretty good job over on the forums. He's 35, and he's noticed something that I have, too: there are lots of children under 15 playing WoW.Now, I'll leave it up to you to decide whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. Personally, I think it's a terrible thing. All of those pet peeves, all that noob/jerk talk from earlier, mages who AOE without regard for aggro or strategy, and players who duck out of instances five minutes in because "sry my mom makin dinner"-- I realize not all of these things are the fault of kids playing, but I think that a lot of them are. Let's just say that if Blizzard could charge me $30 a month to play on a server where everyone was somehow guaranteed to be over the age of 18 (I'm 26, for the record), I'd take that deal in a hot second.Now I know, too, that there are ways around it. I play Horde, mostly. I've found a few good guilds for my characters, places where pretty much everyone playing is more mature and can put together a sentence without using the letter "u" as a pronoun. And I know that not all kids play the game like it's a nonstop loot grab/bragging contest-- I'd imagine there are at least a few 14-year-olds out there who really are interested in working together and relaxing on a run through Scholo instead of worrying about what "epix" will drop or winning the DPS meter. But by and large the experiences I've had grouping with people who turn out to be under 18 have not been, let's just say, my favorite parts of the game.Unfortunately, there's not really a solution, short of the aforementioned age-specific server that's probably not technically possible anyway (kids would still sneak on-- I would if I was still one). I guess I'll just have to continue to be a geezer, sitting there wistfully trying to understand the deeper mechanics of crowd control and aggro management while the kids in my group fight over what their highest crit has ever been. As Neth jokes in the thread (Neth, if you're reading this, rock on for the Neal Stephenson and HHGTTG love!), someday we'll all have to have our own gaming retirement community. Finally, those little whippersnappers will leave us alone.
Mario Hoops site updated again
Another week and another lesson at Dunk U has us being schooled in the art of the Paratroopa dunk. With wings spread wide and flying about with the kind of majesty only a Pegasus riding the back of a Luckdragon could, this 44 point dunk is epic. Every week a new dunk is revealed and every week we find ourselves needing a larger bib to suck up the vast amounts of saliva slowly flowing from our mouth and dripping down our chin.
