The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf was never coming to consoles this year, according to Adam Badowski, managing director at developer CD Projekt Red. Back in May, retail listings for the game, popularly believed to be deceased, popped up on a Danish retail site and Blockbuster.dk."It's not true; that's a mistake. It's not even rumor, it's a mistake," Badowski told us at Gamescom. Asked if the console version was, in fact, cancelled three years ago he definitively exclaimed, "Yes! You never know, but we are busy and have two different games."Those two different games are one unannounced project and Cyberpunk. CD Projekt Red announced modding tools for The Witcher 2 at the show this week.

The Witcher 2 has been very successful for CD Projekt -- and it's most certainly been deserved -- so when it came time to figure out the DLC strategy, the company didn't want to charge players on the PC. As for the Xbox 360, well ... that's not up to CD Projekt. "All DLC for the PC version is and will remain FREE," development director Adam Badowski told Rock Paper Shotgun. "That's not likely to be the story for the Xbox version, because of certain Microsoft policies that need to be followed. But on PC, once you buy our game, you don't need to worry about any additional costs – we will provide all updates, including those featuring new content, for free." Badowski says no current expansion packs are planned, but if CD Projekt is to ask PC players for additional money, it'd be for "a more classic expansion pack along the lines of, say, Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast." The "certain policies" Adam is speaking about have certainly thrown developers for a loop in the past. Who can forget Team Fortress 2 and the Left 4 Dead 2 DLC thing? Valve's Gabe Newell has been one of the most vocal opponents of Microsoft's restrictive policies.

In a late night missive from Polish publisher CD Projekt, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was given a solid release date: May 17, 2011. Project lead Adam Badowski admitted that the launch had been moved back "a few weeks" to allow the PC action-RPG more development time. "We've decided to the move the launch date back a few weeks to afford us more time to polish the game," he said. CD Projekt also teased "hot news" to be served up during the publisher's autumn conference on November 18, including details of the game's Collector's Edition, pre-order specifics, and more. If you can't make it to the conference in person -- it's in Warsaw, Poland, after all -- it'll be streaming live on both the official Witcher 2 website and the game's Facebook page starting at 12:30PM EST sharp on November 18. In the meantime, GameStop appears to have already launched the game's collector's edition listing, showing a $130 price tag and ... umm ... like, a ton of stuff (listed after the break). It's a good thing you have about half a year to save up all that dough!
