    Many of us use gadgets that sport gleamingly refined, anodized aluminum or titanium cases -- but have you ever wondered exactly how the process works? Bill Hammack, at it again after explaining to us how the CCD, LCDs, and hard drives work, breaks it down (pun intended) for us -- in less than five minutes. He talks about, and even shows us how the surface of titanium is meticulously rusted using electro-chemicals to grow an oxide layer, changing the color based on its thickness. He follows that up with some commentary on how a similar reaction gobbles up and transforms aluminum, creating a much thicker, porous oxide layer that can be filled with any color dye. So, just to be clear: controlled corrosion is good for your Mac, border control -- maybe not so much. You can watch the video right after the break.

  • ASUS' Eee PC 1002HAE: a faster 1002HA dressed in Eluminum

    When you think Eee PC, or netbooks in general, the usual image that comes to mind is thick slab of white plastic. That's certainly true of the Eee PC 1002HA. However, drop the letter "E" into the model number and you've got ASUS' new Eee PC 1002HAE dressed in a swank aluminum skin and 1.6GHz N280 processor within. While the rest of the specs remain unchanged -- 802.11b/g/n, 1GB of memory and 160GB disk, 1.3 megapixel webcam, memory card slot, 3.8-hour Li-Polymer battery, and 10-inch 1,024 x 600 pixel LED backlit display -- the new shell drops the weight from 1.45kg to 1.2kg for a savings of about half a pound. At the moment, this model is either Japanese-only or at least a Japanese-first (unusual for ASUS) with a May 16th launch for the tax inclusive price of ¥49,800 (about $506).[Via Engadget Japanese]

  • Apple introducing new manufacturing process, MacBook 'Brick'?

    The Apple rumor mill has really cooked up a doozy this time. According to 9to5mac -- a site with a fairly good track record -- Apple's next big thing isn't just a laptop or an iPod... it's an entirely new manufacturing process. If you believe the site's sources, an as-yet-unannounced event on October 14th will herald in a new iteration of the MacBook dubbed the "Brick," but the big news won't actually be about the laptop. Apparently, Apple has created a brand-new process to sculpt casings for products out of aircraft-grade aluminum, using a system that carves the pieces out of a single block of metal using "3D lasers" and water-jet cutting. The new technique will supposedly allow for seamless components which require no bending or folding, won't use screws to join together, are ultra-light but also "super strong," and will enable the company to rapidly prototype and produce new designs. Of course, not a single word of this is confirmed or even acknowledged by Apple, though we have been hearing whispers of the "Brick" for a few weeks now. Ultimately, everyone should approach this news with extreme skepticism, but if these rumors get magically transmuted into reality, there's no telling what kind of new gear Apple might have up its sleeve.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
