Remember Daniel Abt? The Formula E driver was disgraced after secretly subbing in an 18-year-old esports professional during a virtual 'Race at Home Challenge.' Abt was suspended from the competition, ordered to make a 10,000 euro (roughly $11,279) charitable donation and dropped by Audi, the team he had been driving for that season.

Audi's tri-motor E-Tron S electric cars will be ready to drift

Electric cars tend to handle well thanks to a low center of gravity and instant torque, but they aren't usually light on their feet and can be harder to drift unless they're appropriately tuned. Audi, however, believes it can bring back that liveliness without compromising on what makes EVs special. It has detailed the S variants of the E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback, noting that they'll be the first mass-produced EVs with three motors -- one large motor producing a typical 124kW (150kW boost) at the front and two smaller rear motors that produce a combined 196kW (264kW boost). The results are livelier vehicles whose torque vectoring not only helps them take corners faster, but can produce "controlled drifts" on demand. If you're comfortable throwing an expensive SUV sideways, it's an option.

We have quite a lot to be anxious about these days. Global warming, another potential war, increasing health care costs, Kanye, trade wars, gig economies and relatives with differing political views pouncing on us via social media. Then there's the dreaded range anxiety. A concern you still have, even though the last time you took a road trip Arrested Development was still on Fox, you're going to need at least 350 miles of range at all times. That's where the 204-mile range Audi E-Tron comes in.

The question is no longer "where's my flying car," but "am I willing to get in one?" Uber and Hyundai certainly hope so, as they unveiled the S-A1 flying taxi concept could one day shuttle you at up to 180 MPH from one hub to another. Speaking of a company going outside its wheelhouse, Sony unveiled the Vision-S EV replete with sensors and copious screens. Not to be outdone, Mercedes unveiled its own future-tastic self-driving AVTR EV and decided to do a tie-in with James Cameron's Avatar, for some reason. Next, we hopped into Audi's AI:Me for an autonomous spin, complete with a VR headset. Still on the transportation theme, we saw Bosch's Virtual Visor that blocks the sun but not your view, and BMW's AR windshield that knows where you're looking. For more, check out our complete CES2020 coverage.

If you don't think Audi's electric cars are fast enough, don't fret -- they'll be plenty speedy before long. Audi director Julius Seebach recently told Autocar that the brand will introduce RS performance versions of its cars, with an E-Tron GT variant coming in 2021. You can also expect RS editions of plug-in hybrids, and Seebach indicated that you'd likely see an equivalent for the E-Tron Sportback.

If you visit Qatar in the next few years, you might find yourself riding in a driverless vehicle. Volkswagen and Qatar have struck a deal that will bring self-driving electric vehicles to the public transportation network in the capital city of Doha before the end of 2022. A total of 35 autonomous ID Buzz vans will carry up to four people each on semi-fixed routes in the Westbay area, while Scania buses will handle larger groups. VW's MOIA and Audi's AID will handle the software needed to run the service.

Audi is giving customers who buy its newer vehicles seven free days of Silvercar rental under a new program called "Always Audi." While people probably aren't going to buy one of the automaker's vehicles just to get a week's worth of complimentary rental days, it's a nice perk to tack onto a purchase. To be eligible for the free days, customers must buy or lease model 2019 vehicles or newer.

If Audi's E-Tron SUV is too big or pricey for you, don't worry... the company has something decidedly more accessible (and possibly fun) in store. It just unveiled an E-Tron Scooter meant to serve "multi-modal" travelers who only rarely hop into cars, if at all. You won't confuse this with any other electric commuting machine, though. While the e-tron has the profile of a scooter, you ride it like a skateboard by shifting your weight. Yes, it's a scooter you can carve. And when it only needs one hand, your other hand is free to signal or hold on to a shopping bag.

Even when you're behind the wheel of some of the most luxurious vehicles in the world, you're going to want to pull over, stretch your legs and give your backside a rest. The same is true for the Audi A7. But while driving it, those rest stops were few and far between.

The Level 4 self-driving EV would allow you to chill and be entertained in your vehicle, rather than getting stressed by traffic jams and angry drivers.

The European Commission believes BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen worked together to delay clean emissions technology. Last fall, the EU Commission launched a formal investigation to determine if the automakers breached EU antitrust rules by restricting competition on the development of emissions-reducing technology. Now, in a Statement of Objections, the Commission has informed BMW, Daimler and VW of its "preliminary view" that they did in fact violate antitrust rules -- meaning they also led to higher emissions and denied consumers the opportunity to buy less polluting cars.
