"Let me tell you about the game I played when I was still young..." Growing up, I was familiar with the name Bionic Commando, although I'd never played it for myself. I've had lots of conversations with friends about old games, and they'd reminisced about some game with a guy that swung around on a grappling arm. Yet strangely enough, none of my friends could remember what the game was called. When it was announced that Bionic Commando was to receive a re-imagining, I finally was able to match that game my friends loved, with the title. With the hype for the new game, I caught my first glimpse of the old 8-bit classic in promotional videos, and I really felt like I'd missed out on something special. But my disappointment quickly turned to anticipation when it was later revealed that the game would also be remade in 2D for download on all the popular home consoles! (raucous cheering) But not the Wii! (sound of crickets) Long-time Nintendo fans love to remember the old times, but we don't hold dear the memories of being repeatedly snubbed out of multiplatform ports. With GlovePIE running and Wiimote in hand, I turned to the PC version of Bionic Commando: Rearmed.

Following the announcement of Bionic Commando Rearmed for Xbox Live Arcade, we jumped -- or should we say swung -- at the opportunity to pry more information out of Capcom. Thus, we cornered Ben Judd, Capcom Japan's Producer in charge of the Bionic Commando brand (must have been an easy job for the last 20 years or so) and shot him some questions. We cover a range of topics from the difficulties of making an old game relevant again to the unfortunate business that is offline only co-op. Find the interview after the jump. %Gallery-14199%

  • New Bionic Commando gets creative with his arm

Since we first heard that a new Bionic Commando was in the works, all we've been able to think about is how his non-boring arm will be implemented. Will he use it to choke dudes? Will he throw massive chunks of debris at bad guys? Will he use it to to pull a tram down to the ground and destroy a car for no apparent reason? Yes, yes and -- as strange as it sounds -- yes. We've also included some swinging action after the jump (spoiler alert: It's Spider-Man), but the interesting part is the video above. Who would have thought that Nathan Spencer would come up with radder things to do with his arm than Radd Spencer? Oh irony, do you know no limits?

"Forces ... dormant since long." Or should that be, "Forces ... long since dormant?" Damn this pesky English. Anyway, those are the first words in the trailer for the recently announced return of Capcom's Bionic Commando on next-gen systems. It doesn't take very long to figure out that the game looks like a mix of Capcom's Lost Planet (thawed) and a Spider-Man game.On the plus side, Lost Planet was fun, if not just a tad on the short side. On the negative side, anything compared to a Spider-Man game automatically has two strikes against it out of the gate. There's still a long way to go before this game makes its debut and hopefully we'll get a better idea about combat in future trailers instead of all this Spidey swinging.

After fans got past the excitement of a new Bionic Commando being in development, it's probably then that the confusion set in. "Why is everything so different?" they must have wondered, clinging their Bionic Commando-themed pillows close to their chests. Why is my character not named Radd? Why am I not fighting Badds? Will I look even remotely like I did in the NES version? If you're looking for reverence, you won't find it here. You're Nathan Spencer (a name so forgettable, it's actually difficult to type without a visual reference) taking on a new foe called Bio Rain that essentially just turned a city to rubble. But let's be honest, you don't care about the story, do you? You care about swinging around with a bitchin' bionic arm. And it appears that's one part of the game still blessedly intact. Also, as you can see in this video, the arm looks cool. And, in the end, isn't that really what matters?[Update: There's a few more nuggets on the new official Bionic Commando site.]

The latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly's Quartermann rumor mill is coming with a fresh set of rumors to peruse. The juiciest hearsay is that Capcom's Bionic Commando, once rumored to be getting the remake treatment, is now being developed as a full-fledged installment for the PlayStation Network.Dark Cloud developer Level 5, whose current PlayStation 3 project White Knight Story has been outside of the limelight since wowing us with footage from last year's Tokyo Game Show, is rumored to be announcing four new RPGs at this year's TGS in September. And they're not necessarily PS3 games, either. Also mentioned? Incoming Dragon Quest remakes, but this isn't exactly a rumor since we heard Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada explicitly say remakes were coming before Dragon Quest IX. The Quartermann does add some details, however, reporting that the first remake will be Dragon Quest IV for the DS.

We've previously seen Afterburner and Lemmings re-tooled, to make them suitable for our favorite portable. While both of those titles are enjoyable, there is still a ton of gold to be mined from the past, then reshaped into something grand and new. With that in mind, I thought it we'd do a public service, and remind publishers of some of those titles. Here they are in no particular order: Bionic Commando Contra Lunar Streets of Rage Splatter House Bonk Strider Double Dribble Golden Axe Shinobi Out of this World Zombie Ate My Neighbors Those are a few of the titles we'd like to see. But what does our opinion matter? Let us know what games we missed, or what classics you'd like to see resurrected on the PSP.
