It turns out Gearbox had a very good reason for letting the Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 trademark lapse: the name is dead. Development on the game continues, but Gearbox announced during a PAX panel that Furious 4 has become so different from the Brothers in Arms franchise that it has become a new IP entirely, Kotaku reports. Apparently that's what Randy Pitchford meant back in July, when he noted that the game had "evolved."Further information about the game, including minor details like a name and release window, will have to wait for another announcement from Gearbox.

"The game has evolved, I think people are going to be surprised by what they'll see, and it's still evolving," Gearbox president Randy Pitchford told CVG about Brothers in Arms: Furious 4. "One of the reasons why we're not talking about it now is that it's evolving and we need to make further changes before we can start talking about it."The Ubisoft-published shooter was presumed dead after its E3 2011 reveal was followed up by complete silence – a silence only broken by the news that its trademarks had lapsed. CVG reports that the USPTO rejected the dual trademark application by Ubisoft and Gearbox, and Gearbox is now filing on its own.Of course, evolution is not a quick process, and as a result Furious 4 won't make its original 2012 release window. "I might come around to talk about Furious Four between the releases of Borderlands 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines," Pitchford said, "but certainly I won't before the release of Borderlands 2." Borderlands 2 is out in September, and Aliens is due in February.

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 may be in trouble. Some lapsing trademarks for the its title intimate the Gearbox-developed game is all but abandoned (or the name is changing), and our inquiries into Gearbox Software have yet to be answered. "We don't have anything to share at this point in time," an Ubisoft representative told Joystiq.Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 was announced at last year's E3 ... and then that was it. We didn't hear a single thing after that preliminary announcement, even though the game was given a tentative 2012 launch window. Right now a cancelation isn't confirmed, but it's looking like these four will have something to be really furious about soon enough.

  • Brothers in Arms returning to Nazi territory as the Furious 4

Gearbox's Randy Pitchford just took the stage at Ubisoft's E3 press conference to announce a new title called Brothers in Arms: Furious 4. Pitchford promised both "a new take on wargames and a new take on World War 2" with the title, and then showed a short trailer with four different player characters, each presumably with their own abilities and characteristics, all making up a "special squad of soldiers." Unlike the more historical bent of the previous Brothers in Arms titles, this one is a less reverent take, featuring a more stylistic look and at least one Nazi exclaiming "Schisse!" Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 is set for a release sometime next year.
