This Call of Duty: Ghosts launch trailer features all of the explosions, wanton gunplay and caucasoid rappers you'd expect, but more importantly, it also gives the game's canine companion a moment in the sun - or that is, a tense few seconds of snarling down hungry wolves in the moonlit snow.

  • Clans get an upgrade, new app for Call of Duty: Ghosts

Clans in Call of Duty: Ghosts are no longer separated by platform, so your clan can span Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC, Activision says. No matter which platform your friends are competing on – granted it's not Wii U – you can all enjoy the additional Clan XP that yields exclusive unlocks for the whole clan as you play together. Early registration for clans is open right now. If you're in an existing clan in another Call of Duty game, your leader can now transfer over to Ghosts – or you can wait until the game launches and manage your clan in-game. There will also be clan-versus-clan playlists for multiplayer. A new free app for clans will aim to make communication and "rallying up" for play sessions easier. The app features a Clan Wars metagame where, depending on which game types you're playing in multiplayer, you'll battle other Ghosts clans in a war of sorts over territory. Placing in the top three of Clan Wars will then yield additional rewards to your clan, both in the app and in the game. Finally, we've got the minimum system requirements for PC after the break, but first clear up some space on your hard drive. You're going to need it.

  • Call of Duty: Ghosts dedicated servers not restricted to Xbox One

Call of Duty: Ghosts' dedicated servers aren't only on Xbox One, but are coming to "next gen," "current gen," and PC versions too. The news comes via Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin, the exec producer careful to not mention specific platforms in his Twitter announcement. "We've already mentioned dedicated servers as part of the overall plan to improve connectivity," Rubin wrote. "Dedicated servers will be used on current gen, next gen and PC with Ghosts. And, in order to make sure that people have the best possible experience regardless of platform, location or connection, Ghosts will be using a hybrid system of dedicated servers and listen servers. So no matter where you are the game will always be trying to give you the best online performance possible. "There is also some great new tech in the matchmaking system that will place players in matches that have the best combined overall connectivity performance. Again these are just some of the things that are going into Call of Duty: Ghosts to give players a great online experience." Rubin's tweet comes after he announced Ghosts would use the Xbox One's cloud for dedicated servers. It's unclear if Rubin's avoiding mentioning other platforms because of (ridiculous seeming) red tape, or because certain version(s) don't feature dedicated servers. When one Twitter user asked him if PS3 and PS4 were included, Rubin replied, "I can't call out other platforms by name but one might assume that from what I wrote." We'll know soon enough since the Ghosts train is fast approaching. First stop is PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U on November 5, followed by PS4 and Xbox One at launch.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will introduce a new type of hybrid AI-and-human multiplayer experience called Squads. First, a player forms their own Squad, a group of soldiers with varying perks and load-outs designed to support a certain play style. This squad then levels up and progresses as the player unlocks XP throughout the various Squad-centric multiplayer modes. All of the XP earned in each of these Squad modes can then carry over to the multiplayer experience proper. Call of Duty: Ghosts launches on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC on November 5. PS4 and Xbox One installments will be available during those respective console launches.

  • Next-gen upgrades won't include single-player saves

With the variety of upgrade programs offered for players to switch from current-generation to next-gen systems in the coming months, one thing they won't be able to bring to their new Xbox One or PS4 systems is their single-player save files. Representatives for EA, Ubisoft and Activision confirmed to Kotaku that each respective publisher does not have a method for porting single-player campaign save files for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts to PS4 and Xbox One. In the case of Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts, both games will see multiplayer progress carried over to next-gen systems. EA also announced an upgrade program for Madden NFL 25 in July that not only ports your Madden Ultimate Team cards to next-gen systems, but also offers six free card packs to Anniversary Edition owners. Best Buy, Amazon, GameStop and Sony have their own $10 game upgrade programs, but none seem to save your single-player campaigns for you. Whether that impacts upgrade or current-gen purchasing plans for players remains to be seen.

Microsoft and Activision have teamed up to offer a disc-less license for Call of Duty: Ghosts that works across Xbox consoles. If you plunk down $70 you'll get both Xbox 360 and Xbox One digital versions of the game, tied to your Gamertag. Alternatively, you'll be able to download the game through Xbox 360 for $60 and pay $10 to upgrade to the Xbox One version later, if you choose to do so before March 31, 2014. The Season Pass for Call of Duty: Ghosts will also carry over from Xbox 360 to Xbox One, as previously announced, provided you make the move before May 31, 2014. The Call of Duty: Ghosts Season Pass includes four DLC packs and immediately grants access to one unique multiplayer head, weapon camouflage, weapon reticle, player patch, player card and player background.

  • Pre-order Call of Duty: Ghosts, get discount on Eminem's latest album

With both game and album debuting on November 5, Activision and Aftermath/Interscope Records have joined forces to offer a discount on Eminem's upcoming album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 to anyone who pre-orders Call of Duty: Ghosts. From now until launch, those who pre-order Call of Duty: Ghosts from GameStop will find a code on their receipt when they come in to pick up the game. This code entitles buyers to download a special version of The Marshall Mathers LP 2 which features "an exclusive, bonus studio track" for $9. Furthering this joint marketing effort is an upcoming trailer for Call of Duty: Ghosts, which will feature "Survival," a track from The Marshall Mathers LP 2. "The energy and intensity of 'Survival' really matches Call of Duty: Ghosts," said the musician. "I'm excited to continue to be a part of the franchise." As we reported earlier, according to Gamestop, Call of Duty: Ghosts is currently on track to be the most pre-ordered game of 2013.

  • Call of Duty: Ghosts tracking to be 'most pre-ordered' game of year

Gamestop's VP of merchandising has put the kibosh on Call of Duty not being its blockbuster self this year. "Call of Duty is an entertainment juggernaut and cultural phenomenon. We are excited for the upcoming release of the new installment of this blockbuster franchise, Call of Duty: Ghosts," said Gamestop exec. Bob Puzon. "We look forward to celebrating the worldwide November launch of this great game that is on track to be the most pre-ordered title of the year." The statement by the mega retailer comes as a slight surprise, given the annualized release of the series had yet to show fatigue, especially in the face of next week's Grand Theft Auto 5 launch. Last month, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg was quite clear that pre-orders for Ghosts were "well below the record-setting pace set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 last year." "Our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past COD pre-orderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition," said Hirshberg recently, referring to the imminent launches of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

  • Best Buy offers $10 Xbox One upgrade on select games

Best Buy has rolled out a program offering $10 next-gen upgrades for a handful of coming games, similar to systems put in place at Gamestop and Amazon. Included in the list of eligible games are FIFA 14, Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 and Watch Dogs. Exactly how you score your cheap upgrade is where things get complicated. According to Best Buy's official site, if you purchase one of the above games within a set period after its release (most can be picked up as much as a month after release day), you'll be given a $10 coupon to be put toward your game's Xbox One incarnation. When you want to upgrade, you must present this coupon as well as the Xbox 360 game. Best Buy will then give you $40 store credit in exchange for the game, reducing the final cost of your new Xbox One game to $10 (unless the Xbox One version has a retail price greater than $60; in that case you'll be paying the remainder as well). If this scheme sounds intriguing, you should also note that all such upgrades must occur by December 31. Full legal details and all the fine print you can digest can be found on Best Buy's official site.

  • Fall in love with the Call of Duty: Ghosts 'Free Fall' pre-order map

Call of Duty: Ghosts is (literally!) shaking up multiplayer thanks to the Free Fall map, which will be available to customers who pre-order the game. This new "dynamic map" adds "that sort of cinematic single-player experience to multiplayer," Infinity Ward Executive Producer Mark Rubin said in the video above. Based on a "cinematic moment" from a single-player story mission called Federation Day, the Free Fall map places players into a building which has collapsed and, in the process, become wedged. The "floor" is actually the glass side of the building, and as players fight for supremacy, that glass will give way, and the building will shudder and plummet further toward the ground. Ghosts isn't often thought of as a horror game, but we'd hate to be anyone with a fear of heights who plays on Free Fall. Yikes.

  • Sony: PS3 to PS4 upgrade pricing set by publishers

    08.22.2013

During Sony's Gamescom press keynote, president Andrew House revealed a program that would allow consumers to upgrade from select PS3 titles to their PS4 counterparts for a "significantly discounted price." UK managing director Fergal Gara told Digital Spy that the pricing will be dictated by publishers. "What will happen is, the PS4 digital file will be made available on the PlayStation Store - as it would be anyway - at launch, and the PS3 discs will be sold through retail. What the consumer can then do, for a premium to be defined by the publisher, is access the PS4 digital game and then provided they still have the PS3 disc, they will be able to play the PS4 version when they decide to buy the next gen." Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4 are the first games eligible for this promotion. GameStop and Amazon both announced they will offer similar upgrade options for Xbox 360 to Xbox One games, though nothing has been announced from either retailer regarding PS3 to PS4 upgrades.

  • Call of Duty: Ghosts' Blitz mode caffeinates Capture the Flag

Playing a first-person shooter with a horde of strangers in a noisy trade show party is never ideal, but the fundamentals of Call of Duty: Ghosts' new multiplayer mode, Blitz, are pretty easy to grasp. Two opposing teams are dropped onto a map. There are two capture points on the map, one in each team's base. The goal is simple: Each team must capture the opposing control point while simultaneously protecting their own. The first team to 15 captures wins. But there's a twist: The instant a player steps into an enemy control point, they are immediately teleported back to their base. You don't have to hold the control point for even a second. There's no flag to carry back to your base. The score tally just ticks up instantaneously and then you're right back in your own base, ready to defend it. Basically, Blitz is capture the flag on amphetamines, an adaptation of the classic game type for the twitchy, split-second confrontations we've come to expect from Call of Duty.

Players that own Call of Duty: Ghosts on PS3 will be able to purchase the PS4 version for $10, €10 or £10 for a limited time, Activision announced today. This follows Sony's announcement last night that PS4 games will be offered at a "significantly discounted" price – also for a limited time – to those who already own the PS3 version. Sony didn't mention a specific price at the time, but the $10 point lines up with retailer next-gen upgrades. Ghosts, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4 – and specifically the publishers Activision, Ubisoft, EA and Warner Bros. – will participate in the PS3-PS4 upgrade program. Player stats from Ghosts will transfer from PS3 to PS4, Activision previously announced.

During Sony's Gamescom briefing, Andrew House announced that PS3 players who purchase select software will have the ability to upgrade to the PlayStation 4 version for a "significantly discounted price." House confirmed a number of games will be available for the "limited time" offer, including Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4. Activision, Ubisoft, EA and Warner Bros. were noted as publishers partnering with Sony on the upgrade initiative. It's unclear if the program will be available worldwide. Unlike similar retailer offers revealed for Xbox One software earlier this week, Sony's plan is to offer the discounted games through its own digital storefront. PlayStation 4 launches in North America on November 15 and in Europe on November 29.

After the dust settled on last week's multiplayer reveal for Call of Duty: Ghosts, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin spoke with Joystiq about the franchise's new current- and next-gen engine, in-game female soldiers and the corporate culture at a very different-looking Infinity Ward studio. Rubin also detailed the process and philosophy behind linking in-game progression to Call of Duty profiles, so that players won't be forced to restart their online careers if transitioning between current and next-gen consoles. For more on Call of Duty: Ghosts (with exclusive in-game footage), make sure to watch Joystiq's hands-on video preview and the interview with CEO of Activision Publishing, Eric Hirshberg. Call of Duty: Ghosts is coming to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year, along with Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC versions on November 5.
