  • CounterSpy review: That slinking feeling

CounterSpy has a lot going for it: a slick visual style filled with bright colors and distinctive silhouettes, a handful of interesting gameplay ideas, a lovely Mancini-esque soundtrack and an opening sequence that would make James Bond blush. For fans of an older era of espionage – when microfilm was king and USB was still decades away – it's very promising. Like a lesser Bond film, however, these polished elements never quite come together.

Video games! They've been hibernating through the summer, but this week's PlayStation Store update brings plenty of the blighters onto PS4, PS3 and Vita. Let's start with the biggie, Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition, which brings Reaper of Souls to the action-RPG on PS3 ($40) and debuts the game itself on PS4 ($60). It's also out on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The two other cross-platform releases are Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, which'll eat up 40 of your greenbacks on PS4 and 30 on PS3, and the stealthy CounterSpy, a $15 cross-buy purchase that unlocks the game ons PS4, PS3 and Vita. PS4 players also have a choice between the hyperviolent $10 Hotline Miami - also cross-buy - the somewhat less violent The Last Tinker: City of Colors ($20) and the retro Arcade Archives Rygar ($8).

Yesterday we learned that Dynamighty's mod stealth-action game CounterSpy will reach the PlayStation 4, PS3 and Vita on August 19. Today we're presented with a launch trailer that's less "debonair, Connery-era James Bond" and more "Daniel Craig on a murderous rampage." [Image: Dynamighty]

Update: Watch the replay above. No Luddy does it better/Makes me feel sad for the rest/No Luddy does it half as good as you/Baby, you're the best/I wasn't looking for video games/I tried to read a book/But like Heaven above me/The spy named Luddy/Is playing all my PS4 games tonight CounterSpy is appropriately named. Dynamighty's stealthy blend of sneaking, shooting, and bananas pop art for PS3 and PS Vita quietly disarmed E3 2013 attendees and then disappeared for months and months. In June, it popped back up at E3 2014 and joined the PlayStation 4 library looking every bit as slick as before. When will we get our mitts on a sweet finished version of the game? Unknown, but today Joystiq is getting an early look on a very special Joystiq Streams. Starting at 2PM EST, Joystiq's Ludwig Kietzmann will be streaming CounterSpy alongside Dynamighty co-founder David Nottingham. Enemy bases will be infiltrated, martinis will be shaken provided a tumbler is available, and everyone hanging out in the chat will get a look at the one of the most promising PS4 games no one's talking about yet. Tune it at Joystiq.com/Twitch at 2PM EST! [Image: Sony]

The launch window is over. The PlayStation 4 is, for now, leading the sales charts and the best way for Sony to keep driving that momentum this generation is with -- what else? -- compelling games. This year's showing at Sony's E3 booth is no different than the last: You've got your smattering of indies, AAA titles and downloadable content. So what should you expect to add to your growing collection in 2014? We took a tour of Sony's booth to find out.

  • CounterSpy sneaking into bases on PS4 this summer

CounterSpy's plans to infiltrate the PS3, Vita, Android and iOS were known since May, but now we can add the PS4 to the list of platforms with a high risk for spying activity. Developer Dynamighty, which is led by former LucasArts developers John Elliot & David Nottingham, leaked the intel on Europe's PlayStation Blog and added that we could expect to start sifting through secrets in Summer 2014. In CounterSpy, players enlist in the COUNTER Agency and sneak into bases owned by nations in the middle of the Cold War. While hunting down blueprints to improve your gear is on your to-do list, you'll spend most of your time thwarting the destructive efforts of each nation, doing your best to make sure they don't nuke humanity out of existence. With support for transferring saves and unlocking weapons across Sony's devices, CounterSpy should fill your '60s spy needs wherever you go. Of course, it remains to be seen if you'll join the ranks of great spies like James Bond, or if you're more of a bumbling agent prone to ant infestations. [Image: Dynamighty]

  • It's a sabotage: CounterSpy set to infiltrate PS3, PS Vita

Sony will publish CounterSpy, the first game from developer Dynamighty, a San Francisco outfit comprised of former LucasArts and Pixar talent, on PS3 and PS Vita. CounterSpy (working title) is a 2D action and stealth game set during the Cold War, in which you infiltrate Soviet and US military installations and sabotage war efforts to prevent the destruction of mankind. And just maybe set it straight, this Watergate. Lead designer David Nottingham calls CounterSpy "primarily" a single-player game in the PlayStation Blog announcement, though he adds Dynamighty is "working on some interesting ways to let you compete with friends that go a little beyond traditional high scores." In an interview with Game Informer, Nottingham says an endless mode with procedurally generated levels is also in the works for the extended replay crowd. There is no launch timeframe for CounterSpy at the moment. All we know is that the game will launch on PS3, PS Vita and mobile platforms – no mention of PS4.
