I only have two words after playing Final Fantasy XIV. CRAB BATTLE! Ok, so perhaps I have more than two words to say after playing Final Fantasy XIV and interviewing the game's producer, Hiromichi Tanaka. I was finally able to wrap my mitts around the game here at E3 2010 and experience the meat of the game -- a short preview of the game's combat system and questing system and some time with the game's character creator. Final Fantasy XIV seems to be bridging elements of the old with elements of the new, and it's wrapping it all in a very gorgeous graphics engine. It's complicated without complication, simple on the surface yet teeming with a deeper game if you know where to look. %Gallery-95698%

We've managed to avoid most of the nascent memes that emerged -- drenched in the amniotic fluid of thousands of gaming-forums -- from Sony's stillborn PS3 press conference (condensed here for your convenience). But we can only hold out for so long! For those not in the know, during the demonstration of feudal Japanese action title Genji 2, they said "the stages of the game will also be based on famous battles that actually took place in ancient Japan ... So here's this giant enemy crab!" Errr, right. But that's not all internet jokesters have been giggling about: there's "Riiiiiiiidge Raaaacer," there's Genji 2's "real-time weapon change," and of course, there's "The Price." How nice then that this Flash animation, fittingly dubbed Giant Enemy Crab Battle, managed to cram all of the above (not to mention genital disease, Sonic the Hedgehog, and, um, ballet) into its short runtime.[Via GameSetWatch]
