While the Wiimote is probably exceeding Nintendo's wildest expectations in terms of its popularity among gamers, the little controller that could has also developed quite a following in the modding community -- with the proper scripts, you can control anything from an RC car to a Roomba to a software drum kit. Well now you can add research tool to the Wiimote's list of accomplishments, as scientists at the University of Western Australia have successfully employed it to navigate immersive 3D environments created by a projector and three-meter-diameter dome. By modifying the popular DarwiinRemote OS X app, Paul Bourke and his colleagues at the University of Western Australia found themselves with a cheap tool to fly through space simulations, cruise around a visual representation of supercomputer node activity, and even tour 360 degree VR maps of real world buildings. The team concluded that the Wiimote is a good-but-not-great substitute for the controllers normally used in these simulations, but at a fraction of their cost, it opens up this method of data manipulation to a whole new world of users.[Via MetaFilter]

We've seen the MacSaber, we've seen the DarwiinRemote, now behold the ultimate in nerddom: the WiiSaber. Just like you'd expect, the WiiSaber combines your erratic Wiimote-sensed arm motions with those purtiful lightsaber sound effects built into the MacSaber app for beautiful WiiSaber harmony. But don't take our word for it, just check out the nerds after the break doing what they do best.[Via TUAW]

TUAW reader Jason Argos reports that DarwiinRemote has now moved to SourceFoorge with an updated version (0.3) supporting IR sensor caliibration, remote key maaping and better direction analysiis. Cool stuuff. Thanks, Jason.

We've got no data to back up this claim, but we're going to guess that the majority of Wii owners are also Mac owners. Yeah, yeah, yeah, this flies directly in the face of statistics -- like a pile of bugs (no Windows pun intended) smashing into the aerodynamically ineffective windshield of common sense. But think about it. Elegant, white devices with nonsensical names ... it's a no-brainer. How else do we know? Both come with Bluetooth built-in. So, while Windows users are busy trying to figure out if their beige box supports Bluetooth, Mac users can get busy and download DarwiinRemote to control their Wii-Motes in Mac OS X.[Via TUAW]

We've seen the Wiimote do its fair share of damage during its short, spunky lifespan, but the serious crowd has done its part in hacking up the Wii as well. Aside from sensor bar, um, mods, and tricky wrist strap fixes, a few engineering minds have even found the Wiimote (somewhat) useful on a PC. Per usual, the endearing Mac crowd is up to the challenge as well, as Hiroaki has unveiled an admittedly "unstable" piece of OS X-friendly software to allow Nintendo's Wiimote to mimic the Apple Remote. While the possibilities for a more fleshed-out version are certainly obvious, the current build sports a full key map to help you push aside that delayed Apple Remote purchase, and reportedly allows you to mouse around a bit (albeit shakily). While the exact details are a bit scant at this point, the DarwiinRemote will purportedly work with IR-equipped Macs, as well as ones with Bluetooth, so be sure and hit the read link to get your download on.[Via TUAW]

What do you get when you take a Mac and add the Nintendo Wiimote? Why, DarwiinRemote, of course. This little app, which is still rough around the corners, lets you use your Wiimote (that being the new controller that comes with Nintendo's next gen console, the Wii) and use it as if it were an Apple Remote (only on Macs that have an IR sensor of course).[via Digg]Useful? Not really. Cool? You bet.Update: It would seem the Wiimote uses Bluetooth, so most Macs can join in on the fun. Thanks to everyone in the comments for correcting me.
