Datto gets official with Box 2 Box specs, pricing
Datto dropped a few details about its Box 2 Box peer-to-peer network attached storage device at CES earlier this month, but it's only now actually dished out the complete specs for the device, and the all-important pricing details. As we had heard, the P2P NAS is available in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB versions, which'll set you back $350, $380 or $480 if you pre-order them now, or $620, $660 or $850 if you go for the twin-pack of each (non pre-order prices are a bit higher). Each of those are effectively computers in their own right, and come equipped with a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, four USB 2.0 ports, 7,200 rpm 3.5-inch hard drives with up to 32MB cache, and a Linux-based OS of some sort. Datto's Box 2 Box uses P2P, syncs drive 2 drive
Making clever use of peer-to-peer technology, Datto's new Box 2 Box network-attached storage drive is boasted to continuously sync encrypted information with another NAS regardless of its location, connection, or impeding firewalls. The 160, 250, and 500GB-sized drives will be packaged as either single units or as a psychically-linked pair. The company is touting no annual fees, but unfortunately the upfront costs haven't been disclosed yet. It sounds like the perfect solution for backing up your Office episodes with that secret lair you've got located deep within the Himalayas. Datto's Z Series: world's first on / off-site backup solution to use ZFS
Datto earned a round of golf claps with its Backup NAS by bringing comparatively affordable off-site storage to the small businesses of the world, but it's giving itself a round of applause with the Z Series. Hailed as the "planet's first on and off-site backup solution to use ZFS," these units provide up to 1TB of local and off-site storage, optional RAID 1 local redundancy, twin gigabit Ethernet ports, OS X / Windows / Linux compatibility and the obligatory rock-solid stability that ZFS is known for. You'll also get a rapid recovery promise, which enables you to sleep easy knowing that your data can be restored within 24 hours should disaster strike. The units range in capacity from 250GB ($499) to 1TB ($1,149), while the required service packages demand anywhere between $35 per month to $1,000 a year.
Datto Backup NAS brings off-site storage to the little guys
Though it's not the first box we've seen built to take your local backups elsewhere, the Datto Backup NAS drive could certainly fill a gaping security hole at many small / medium-sized businesses that are currently operating without any kind of off-site storage. Said devices come in 100GB and 500GB versions, play nice with Windows, Mac or Linux setups and pipe your data to secure external servers (using AES+ SSL key-based encryption, too) in order to keep the process load off of your machine(s). Granted, the annual service fee is $99 for 100GB and $249 for 500GB (monthly plans available), but that does include free support, 24 / 7 backup monitoring and the promise of bringing you back up to speed in under 24 hours should disaster strike.
