The closed beta for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls has officially begun. Players that have opted in to the beta should begin checking their email for beta invites. Reaper of Souls, the first expansion for Diablo III, features all-new content as well as the new Crusader class, enchanting, transmogrification and of course, lots and lots of frantic mouse clicking. Players that have received a beta invite can check their Battle.net accounts to verify that the license has been added -- or if you've received a Closed Beta key, you can add it to your account by logging in to your Battle.net page. For players that have yet to receive an invitation to the closed beta, make sure you've opted in on your Battle.net Beta Profile Settings page -- and while you're at it, make sure the page has the latest system specifications for your computer. Keep in mind that with the closed beta, you must have an active Diablo III license attached to your account -- and that license needs to be in good standing in order to be eligible. No banned or suspended accounts. Also, as with any beta test, the risk of phishing attempts runs a little higher. If you receive an email that states you're in the beta, be sure you don't click any links in the email itself. Instead, log into your Battle.net account to check that the license has been added, or to manually add a game code. For more information on the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls closed beta, take a look at Blizzard's official page -- and good luck to all those that have opted in!

Blizzard announced that its upcoming Diablo 3 expansion Reaper of Souls is coming to the PlayStation 4. A playable version will be showcased at BlizzCon in November. Revealed in August, Reaper of Souls raises character level caps and introduces a new storyline act, adding new endgame content for veteran players. A port of Diablo 3 premiered for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 earlier this year. Single-player and co-op demos will be available at BlizzCon 2013, giving players an early look at how the new Crusader build pairs with existing character classes.

One of the more interesting announcements from Blizzard this year was their intended return to console gaming after a long absence, with the re-release of Diablo III for Playstation 3 and Xbox360. Well, that day has now arrived, and if you so wish you can now go pick up a console copy of Diablo III. Even if you've already played it on the PC, you might consider it worth your time to try out the console version. I've heard very good things about its gameplay, and a some of the WoW Insider staff tell me they even prefer it over the PC original. It might be enough to switch you over -- and just in time for the Reaper of Souls expansion, too!

  • Diablo III: Reaper of Souls loot designed to make auction house a 'last resort'

There's been no love lost between Diablo III players and the game's real-money auction house. And while Blizzard Entertainment has no plans to remove RMT from Diablo III, the studio's upcoming Reaper of Souls expansion features a redesigned loot system built to get players out of the trading game and back into the grind. In an interview with PC Gamer, lead content designer Kevin Martens explained that the team likes trading between players but lamented that the auction house has become the primary method through which players obtain items: It is fun to go buy something instantly, the instant gratification feel, that sugar high; however, it's not the core fantasy, it's not the most fun, and by the endgame, for a variety of reasons, [players] tend to check the auction house first and play the game second. According to Martens, the looting and enchanting systems in Reaper of Souls are designed to "cut the legs out from the auction house" and to create an environment in which "the most fun way to play the game becomes the best way to play the game." Lead writer Brian Kindregan echoed Martens' sentiments, noting, "We want the auction house to be your last resort, right?" • Gamescom 2013: Diablo III unveils its first expansion, Reaper of Souls

What happens when an angel gets ahold of a demon's soulstone in Diablo III? You probably don't want to know; it's not going to be pretty. The game's first expansion, Reaper of Souls, was announced today at Gamescom, and the fact that Malthael the angel possesses the soulstone harboring Diablo himself is all the justification you need for fighting him. This is a very bad thing. All right, the mechanical side of things does come into play. Even if you don't care about the lore or about fighting off fallen angels, you can still care about features like a refined loot system that focuses on providing less loot that's more likely to be useful instead of quite so much garbage. There's also a new class being added, the Crusader, who looks similar at a glance to Diablo II's Paladin. Add in a new NPC who can reallocate stats on gear and you've probably got all of the incentive you need to look forward to the expansion.

  • Diablo 3 teaser site hints at possible Reaper of Souls expansion

A new teaser page on the official Diablo 3 site looks to point towards an expansion called 'Reaper of Souls.' The page shows an image of a looming, shadowy entrance, along with a quote from the Book of Tyrael, which reads "Death, at last, shall spread its wings over all." The page itself is titled Reaper of Souls, and text at the bottom of it indicates Blizzard trademarked that term, something TMView confirms happened just yesterday. Also, the image has the filename "d3x_teaser_en_us.jpg," the 'x' there suggestive on its own. We know a Diablo 3 expansion has been planned for some time, but this teaser page adds to suspicions that more info will be forthcoming soon, most likely at Gamescom later this month. In a recent earnings call, Blizzard President Michael Morhaime said the company would share "Diablo-related news" at the event, while invites for its press conference there teased a "special announcement." Blizzard also trademarked 'The Dark Below' recently; that now seems likelier to be related to World of Warcraft or something else entirely. It's worth noting the teaser page quotes Tyrael's companion book for the game, which is due to be released on October 1 and promises "never-before-known secrets" about the Diablo universe. The teaser also comes just ahead of the action-RPG's arrival on PS3 and Xbox 360, set for September 3, while the PS4 receives the game sometime next year.
