Back in 2009, D.J. Caruso signed on to direct Dead Space. Since then, we haven't heard much about the project -- a piece here; a small morsel there. An interview with AreaGames during a German press tour for I Am Number Four, Caruso's latest film, brings news that a big-screen adaptation of Dead Space is still very alive. "We're working on the story," Caruso said in the video interview, which you can see for yourself just past the break. "We had one attempt of trying to do a prequel, but the story didn't quite work out as well as we wanted it to. But if we can capture how -- I don't want to say, I guess, how scary or horrifying it would be to play that game because it's really, really fantastic. It'd be fun to make that into a movie." And we wouldn't mind seeing it, granted none of those crazy-scary Necromorph children from Dead Space 2 make their way into the film.

Here's yet another example of the iPad excelling in a place it was never intended to actually go: making movies. Director DJ Caruso did an interview in an Apple Store recently, and he says that he used the iPad in all kinds of ways to help make his new movie I am Number Four, from controlling on-set lights with an app to seeing scripts, marking up storyboards and even scouting out locations. Caruso says the initial purchase was more for fun, but as he used the iPad more and more, he found he was doing a lot of his filmmaking work on it as well. "I got it, I don't want to say as a toy," he says, "but then I realized about a week into prep that my storyboards were coming on it, my previs was on it, my script was on it, I don't carry my script anymore." That's great. It's a real sign of just how well-designed the iPad is that it can find itself used powerfully in almost any task. Originally, of course, it was just sold as a device to sit on the couch and consume media with, but lots and lots of industries have found a place for the iPad to help out, and it's no surprise that the film industry is the same way.

  • Dead Space being directed with an 'Eagle Eye' by D.J. Caruso

Variety reports "vidgame" (seriously, Variety, stop that!) Dead Space is going to the big screen under the watchful gaze of Eagle Eye director D.J. Caruso. The producers and EA are currently talking to screenwriters and will then auction the movie to a studio. EA created a bidding war last year when it auctioned off God of War-esque Dante's Inferno -- even before it officially announced the game. The publisher also currently has Sims, Army of Two and Mass Effect movies in varying stages of development. The Variety piece also mentions that EA is "working on the second and third installments" of the Dead Space franchise. Although that can be interpreted to mean sequels to the main game, it could also mean Extraction and the expected sequel. We're following up with Variety and EA for clarification and will update when we hear back.
