Both Suikoden games will arrive next week on Vita (as well as PS3), and Resident Evil: Revelations 2 will launch in the spring of 2015. The amorphous antics of a burgeoning one-eyed blob can no longer be confined to just the PlayStation Vita. Drinkbox, which is now better known for its spirited Wrestlevania game, Guacamelee, has announced a new version of Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this week. The game follows an irritable blob as it squeezes through pipes, wallows through cities and swallows everything in its path, with B-movie style destruction paired with an upbeat soundtrack and Drinkbox's sense of style and speed. Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack will be available on PlayStation 3 in North America today and in Europe tomorrow. The Xbox 360 will get it in America and Europe tomorrow as well, with both versions running $7.99/€6.99/£5.49. Owners of the PlayStation Vita version can purchase a PS3 "upgrade bundle" for $3.99/€2.99/£2.39, additionally gaining the game's soundtrack, some avatars and themes. [Images: Drinkbox Studios]

  • Joystiq Discussion: Are you playing on PS Vita?

"Honestly, Vita owners are the ****ing best," said Chris McQuinn, designer at Drinkbox Studios, in an April interview with GamesIndustry International. McQuinn's team has put their impressive talents to work multiple times on PS Vita, pumping out inspired games like Mutant Blobs Attack and Guacamelee. Some might say, though, Drinkbox would have been better off bringing its vivid slapstick adventures to Steam or home consoles first rather than a handheld with such sluggish sales. McQuinn disagrees. There may not be many Vita owners out there compared to PC players or iPhone owners, but Vita owners are proven game players. "People rag on the Vita so much, and I think people who rag on the Vita don't understand, at least from a business perspective, the purchasing power of Vita owners. Vita owners are serious purchasers of games. It's an amazing system." He's not wrong. PS Vita's blend of inputs, both traditional button controls and multi-touch surfaces, has proven revelatory in myriad games, from Sony and Media Molecule's Tearaway to scrappier independent productions like Roll7's OlliOlli. Those are just two games in what's become one of modern gaming's most quietly impressive libraries. For the classically minded player, Vita's got HD remasters like Final Fantasy X HD as well as a treasure trove of PS1 and PSP games on tap. For the modernity obsessed, it hosts a who's who of independent gaming, from Hotline Miami to Luftrausers. That's not to mention its handful of big budget originals like the sublime Gravity Rush. For all its merits, though, Vita's rough reputation persists. Why? Why is there a perception that Vita doesn't have any games when it's flush with new games and classics alike? For those that have resisted its wiles, why haven't you picked one up and what would convince you to take the plunge? Take the poll and discuss in the comments. Are you playing on PS Vita? • Guacamelee dev trades chicken powers for amputation with Severed

Drinkbox Studios displayed its knack for 2D sidescrolling adventures in last year's Guacamelee!, but its next project will bring its audience a little closer to the action. Severed is a first-person, gesture-controlled adventure game planned for release in 2015. Platforms remain a mystery for now. Severed's world is open, but defending yourself from its inhabitants is handled through "natural-motion based mechanics," according to Drinkbox. Different enemies will have different strengths, weaknesses and tells, so you won't be able to just Fruit Ninja your way through every encounter. Packs of monsters can also surround players, calling for strategy as they decide who to face and deal with first. Like Guacamelee!, players will accumulate abilities as they progress through Severed, including the addition of spells and items to upgrade the main heroine. There won't be transforming goat men to teach you new tricks this time around – instead, Severed will have players lopping off parts of enemies and attaching them to their character. Basically, anyone that thought allowing players to turn into chickens was as weird as Drinkbox Studios was going to get? Doesn't seem like the case anymore. [Image: Drinkbox Studios]

An upgraded version of Drinkbox Studios' luchador action-platformer Guacamelee! is coming soon to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Wii U, IGN reports. Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition collects all DLC from the game's previously released PSN and Steam editions, including a selection of add-on costumes and the "Diablo's Domain" level pack. The campaign has been reworked and extended with new areas and boss fights, and characters now boast new abilities not featured in Guacamelee's original release. A release date has not been announced, though developer Drinkbox notes that Super Turbo Championship Edition will hit digital platforms "soon." [Image: Drinkbox Studios / IGN]

Guacamelee! Gold Edition is Steam's daily deal today. Until 10am PT on Sunday, February 2, you can grab Drinkbox Studios' charming Lucha Libre-inspired platformer for only $3.74. A bundle including the game's delightful soundtrack is available for $5. Guacamelee! Gold Edition includes the base game along with some additional costumes and The Devil's Playground DLC, which opens up an additional area called El Inferno – the Devil's Domain. Guacamelee! Gold Edition also supports Steam Trading Cards, Steam Workshop for custom skins and Steam achievements. In our review, based on the original PS3 and PS Vita version, we called Guacamelee a "luchadorable" good time. "The clumsy evolution of combat aside, I'd heartily recommend Guacamelee – once for its devilish difficulty, again for its luchadorable charm, and one last time for its even-handed treatment of the lowly video game chicken."

You shouldn't need additional reasons to pick up Guacamelee (a game we awarded 4 of 5 stars) but just in case you remain on the fence, developer Drinkbox Studios has announced the content-packed "Guacamelee Bundle Fantastico." Headlining the Bundle Fantastico is the game itself, which is cross-play compatible with both the PlayStation 3 and the Vita handheld. Additionally, the collection includes both the Costume Pack and El Diablo's Domain DLC releases. The former offers new outfits for the game's protagonist which alter how the game plays, from granting you infinite stamina to reducing the power of certain attacks. El Diablo's Domain adds 17 new trials to Guacamelee designed to test the skills of those who have mastered the game's Metroid-meets-lucha libre controls. Rounding out the Bundle Fantastico are three Guacamelee themes for your PS3, 10 Guacamelee avatars, and a remastered soundtrack including 30 mariachi-inspired tracks from the game as well as four additional remixes. Drinkbox claims the Guacamelee Bundle Fantastico should appear on the Sony Entertainment Network later today. Once available, the bundle will feature a $20 price tag - making it $5 more expensive than purchasing Guacamelee by itself.

Between consoles, PC, mobile and everything in between, there are so many games released today that it's impossible to keep up with everything that's coming out – and it's even harder to keep up with the studios behind them. Even with a gaming public that's grown accustomed to following big developers like Valve and small studios like Double Fine, countless other studios slide under the radar. In the interest of sifting a signal from the noise, the Joystiq crew has selected 20 developers that deserve your attention. These studios are making games you should play, and their future work should be highly anticipated. This list is by no means exhaustive, and we invite you to share your own favorites in the comments!

Drinkbox Studios is allegedly preparing a next-gen port of its latest, Guacamelee. This new version, which is said to be coming to Xbox One and PS4, will add new content and greater visual polish to the Lucha Libre-inspired 2D action-platformer. The rumor comes via a piece that was published by IGN over this weekend but has since been pulled. In it, designer Chris McQuinn told IGN that the next-gen version of the game would include two additional worlds to explore, new enemy types, a "chicken-bomb ability" and updated visuals with better particle effects. We contacted Drinkbox Studios and were told by McQuinn that the studio is "not ready to talk about any of our current projects but we'll be sure to reach out to you when we are." Guacamelee initially launched in April of this year, for both the PS Vita and PS3, and was later ported to the PC in August.

If you prefer your Guacamelee Steam-ed, a 'Gold Edition' of the PS3 and Vita game is coming to the PC platform, featuring the Costume Pack and The Devil's Playground DLC. Guacamelee: Gold Edition comes to Steam on August 8, priced $15, or £12/€14 in Europe. If you buy the game in its first week on the portal, you'll get a 10 percent discount, as well as pick up developer Drinkbox's Tales of Space: Mutant Blobs Attack for free. Joystiq head honcho Ludwig, known in wrestling circles as The Kietz Man, gave Guacamelee a body-slamming four stars, recommending the 2D adventure with a three-pronged attack: "once for its devilish difficulty, again for its luchadorable charm, and one last time for its even-handed treatment of the lowly video game chicken." 07.22.2013

Guacamelee will unleash its next DLC pack, "El Diablo's Domain," on PSN tomorrow. Europe will get the DLC on July 24. El Diablo's Domain adds 17 new trials and a trio of new outfits for protagonists Juan and Tostada, all for $2.99. One outfit is based on noted Mexican soccer player Jorge Campos' colorful training garb. Another is based on Mexican folk art, while the third outfit is Diablo himself, provided you can best some tough trials with style. Guacamelee is a 2D action game by Drinkbox Studios starring Juan, a Mexican luchador who can travel between the worlds of the living and the dead. With the aid of mystical female luchador named Tostada, he sets out to defeat the evil Carlos Calaca and pile-drive so many chickens.

Once more, with feeling! Guacamelee's first DLC pack is available in North America again following its initial problematic launch earlier this month. Europe and the rest of the world can go clothes shopping tomorrow. The Guacamelee Costume Pack, which costs $1.99 (€1.59/£1.25), includes three different costumes: the Pollo Luchador, a chicken suit that restores health over time; the Skeleton suit, an undead garment bestowing infinite stamina; and the Identity Swap outfit, which increases strike damage at the cost of throw damage. These outfits also accompany a series of new DLC-related Trophies.%Gallery-192400%

    06.03.2013

Update: Looks like the DLC won't make it today, the PlayStation Twitter account says. Drinkbox Studios will announce the new launch date later. Guacamelee is playing dress-up with some new costume DLC tomorrow (June 5 in Europe) but these garbs aren't strictly for show: each outfit employs a type of risk-versus-reward modifier changing Juan and Tostada's traits in the game. For example, the Pollo Luchador get-up is a bright yellow chicken suit that allows you to replenish health over time, but at the cost of slower stamina regeneration. A skeleton costume grants infinite stamina for super moves, but removes all health packs from the entire game. The third outfit of the bunch decreases throw damage but increases striking damage. All three outfits will be sold together starting tomorrow for $1.99. The DLC will be accompanied by a patch, which will allow players to switch characters at checkpoints - right now, the PS Vita version of Guacamelee only lets you play as Juan and playing as Tostada alone on PS3 requires a convoluted process that will be moot when the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow.
