Click for high res image. We've recently had the pleasure of trying out the new Eye of Judgment: Biolith Rebellion 2 expansion -- that very same expansion set to hit the US PSN this Thursday, March 27. Right away, we were excited to test out our new holo-cards and so we immediately began installing the new expansion. We eagerly waited for the install to go through, though we soon realized it was taking longer than we expected. It was roughly about a fifteen-minute waiting period for a near two gig install. Keep in mind, however, we were told that the final update hitting the PSN should only be one gigabyte, so we assume gamers won't be experiencing the same sort of downtime we went through.Once the install was finished, we immediately noticed some new changes. For one, the start up screen now displays "Set 2" in the lower right corner. Soon after, we began a battle with the sample cards we were given. Out of the 100 new spells and creatures promised in Set 2, we've tested out about 26 new creature and spell cards. The new character models and their animations look wonderful. We're sure fans of the game will like the new units like the Biolith War Chariot -- a tank-like summoned creature that can attack two adjacent enemy squares simultaneously. There's a lot more to see in the game, yet we've only scratched the surface. From what we've seen thus far, we can deduce that Set 2 is something fans will be pleased with. We do have one indirect gripe though; to use your new Set 2 cards you'll need to purchase the expansion software on the PSN for $14.99. Now, why still charge gamers for functionality when they'll already be spending a fortune on cards? Oh well, c'est la vie. In any case, have a look at some shots of new cards and in-game battle animations in the gallery, then let your eyes be the judge of things.%Gallery-19083%

It's almost like we were anticipating another deal by naming one "morning" and this one "day". We'll keep it quick so we can get this knowledge out to you ASAP. A lot of people have been on the edge of a fence when it comes to getting Eye of Judgment -- the big pack with the PlayStation Eye, a starter deck, and an extra pack of cards with the retail game. It was about $70, which turned a lot of people off since there was the whole collecting cards thing to worry about. Amazon has a special deal on the pack right now where you can get it all for $47, a small jump from buying the PS Eye by itself! If you've been on the fence, now is the time to jump off.

  • PS3 Fanboy interview: Eye of Judgment's Yusuke Watanabe

A couple of weeks ago, we helped unveil the first look at the upcoming expansion for Eye of Judgment, Biolith Rebellion 2. Since then, Sony has been slowly unveiling more and more juicy details about the new cards on their official blog. Today, we are happy to present an interview with the creator of Eye of Judgment, Yusuke Watanabe. How did you originally come up with the idea for The Eye of Judgment? Was it always planned as a PS3 game? The trigger was a demo of the CyberCode's image recognition technology, originally developed for use on PC. We transplanted CyberCode to PlayStation format so I could share my surprise with as many users as possible. We worked with CyberCode based on the technical information of PlayStation 3 that, at the time, had just started becoming open, and based on the findings, we found that PS3 was the best console to maximize the potential and appeal of The Eye of Judgment in terms of the specifications.Has Sony thought about releasing a higher quality gameboard? The fabric one is nice but is lacking for people who play on the ground or uneven surfaces. Through a trial and error process using many kinds of materials, the fabric material was the only mat that cleared our standards for endurance, storability, design, and cost. However, we are very interested in creating a high quality luxury mat or board to encourage heated matches.

  • Eye of Judgment expansion coming March 27, online purchase required

When word broke earlier this month of an expansion to Sony and Wizards of the Coast's fourth wall-breaking PlayStation 3 card game, Eye of Judgment, few details were offered save for a promise of more cards and a rather ambiguous spring release. Now Sony has nailed down a specific date, March 27, for the 100-card expansion's debut, as well as let loose a number of details surrounding just what players can expect from the new set once they get over that intoxicating 'new card smell.'While the additions are numerous, the most interesting bit concerns how exactly the new cards will be made available to players, as it turns out that Sony will double dip into the wallets of those who wish to try out the new cards first hand. According to the PlayStation.Blog, before being able to use any new cards purchased from the new set, the expansion will first require players to pay for a download from PlayStation Network, adding new artwork, animations, and rules for game's second set of cards. We still don't know exactly how much this download will run, though the set's boosters and theme decks will continue to carry the normal asking price of $3.99 and $14.99 respectively. If there is a silver lining to be taken from this news however, it's that even those players who choose not invest in the new expansion will be able to play against those that do, no doubt excellent news for players who decide to stand strong against the tides of capitalism alongside their army of Biolith ninjas.

No doubt fans of Eye of Judgment have already collected every card in season one and have battled various opponents more times than you can count. If the game is starting to feel a little bit stale, then we've got some good news for you - there's only a month to wait before the expansion. Containing 100 cards, season 2 should reinvigorate the game, not to mention all the extra rules and abilities that are also featured. Season 2 will hit shelves (and the Playstation Network) on March 27th.The expansion will be a paid download from the PlayStation Store. There's no word on how much it will cost, but the PlayStation.Blog confirms that people who don't buy it will be able to play against those who do, which is excellent news. Alongside the expansion a network update will be released to all Eye of Judgment owners which will improve certain game features and implement an in-game encyclopedia as well as "special matches". For more information on the new cards and abilities be sure to check out Mark Valledor's post on the PlayStation.Blog.

We're happy to hear that Sony hasn't given up on their augmented reality collectible card game, Eye of Judgment. Co-publisher Wizards of the Coast is already printing the first expansion for the PS3-compatible card series, due this spring.PS3 Fanboy has an exclusive look at one of the new cards, with more cards and details over at Sony's official Playstation blog. There were distribution problems with the first set of EOJ boosters, with gamers having a hard time finding cards in their local shops, as well as rampant card copying making it easier to cheat in online matches. Let's hope Sony and Wizards have plugged up the piracy problems with set 2, as well as made the real things easier to find.Read - First card revealed from the upcoming Eye of Judgment expansion [PS3 Fanboy]Read - Hot Off THE EYE OF JUDGMENT Card Press: Set 2 [Playstation.Blog]

With the second set of Eye of Judgment cards coming soon to Japan, Gamespot's Japanese site has published images of several of the cards, and the EOJ community has quickly set out to translate them. Not surprisingly, the new set of cards will bring with them several character abilities not found in the first set.A quick rundown of some of the new abilities include magic protection; nullification of an opposing enemy's dodge attempt; spell interrupt, which disallows your opponent from using a spell for two turns; and pile search, just to name a few. What's exciting is with just a few of the cards translated, there's already signs of the second Eye of Judgment set bringing in some drastic tactical changes that are sure to keep the game interesting for a long, long time. This set is scheduled to be released at the end of March in Japan.[Via Black Cubic]

There are rumors around Fanboy HQ that an Eye of Judgment competition is going to start soon. If you already have this Eye-enabled card game, then you're already set. (Make sure you're practicing -- competition is sure to be tough!) If you don't have the game yet, this deal from amazon.com should set you right. $45 for both the game, the cards and the Eye camera. Heck, the camera by itself costs $40, so even if you're uninterested in the game, this should be a sweet deal.[Via CAG]

  • New Eye of Judgment cards due in March for Japan

Are you ready to get your card on? For those still enamored by the depth of Eye of Judgment, you'll be happy to hear that a new set of cards is getting released in Japan starting at the end of March. Along with the new cards, a software update allowing support for the new cards will release on the same day. That's nice. It would be rather silly to release new cards and be unable to use them, wouldn't it? A third set of cards is set to debut over Summer of '08, but we can't really say for sure since all of this is in regards to the Japanese release dates. Who knows when the rest of the world will get them.[via Siliconera]

  • Eye of Judgment patch allows for private rooms

While this update is actually relatively old (released on the 20th of December) we were far too busy playing all the great Autumn titles to check Eye of Judgment for updates. Imagine our surprise, then, when we loaded up the game to find that not only was there a new patch, but that it also fixed one of our biggest qualms about EOJ's online play. The patch list contains details of the game's improvements and includes being able to select your voice input device from within the game as well as various other performance enhancements. The main attraction to the update, however, is the ability to have private rooms for online play. When the game was first released online play against your friends was a troublesome affair. After sending an invite to your selected victim playmate they would then have, at most, two minutes before some random player jumps into your game room instead. The fix allows you to lock your room for custom matches, which means that only invited players can join.

  • How to play Eye of Judgment without a PS3

    by

    01.02.2008

Eye of Judgment has one major advantage over just about every other game ever made - you can play it anywhere you want, even without the console it was designed for. It's true, because at its core, Eye of Judgment is just like any other collectable card game. Of course, by doing this, you won't get all the fancy schmancy graphics, heavy metal tunes and you'll actually have to keep up with a lot of the goings-on either in your brain or using the dying technology of pencil and paper. However, Tyler Tinsley, a tabletop game designer, has made it all the more easy for those wanting to take EoJ into the furthest reaches of the world. He's constructed a printable tabletop kit that consists of everything you need to play. To make it even easier on the players, he printed health meters on the tiles to make to keep track of your monster's health. We're not sure how many EOJ veterans like ourselves would be interested in playing without their PS3s, but it could be a good way to convince your naysaying friends just how amazingly fun this game is. Big thanks to Tyler for creating this and having it available to gamers everywhere for free.

Gamers firing up the incredibly addictive CCG/videogame Eye of Judgment tonight will find that they have an update waiting for them. Bumping the game version way up to 1.01, this is a mandatory update for anyone who wants to play EoJ online. Without further ado, here is a list of the official updates: Main revised functions (no, we don't know what that means either) Reinforcement of COM AI in Battle Arena Mode Optimization of network connections for Online Mode It is great to see that Sony is updating EoJ already, but they still haven't addressed one of the largest complaints of playing the game online -- the fact that anybody can join your private game while you're waiting for your friend to accept his invite. And really Sony, does the computer need any more help in kicking our asses?[Thanks Woo!]

  • Whoops, print your own Eye of Judgment cards

What kind of devilry is this? Even with a cheap $60 Canon printer, you too can print your own cards for use in Eye of Judgment. This potentially game-destroying trick will let you scan rare cards, share them on the web, and simply print them out to add to your collection. We don't think Hasbro is going to be too happy about this. Will Sony come up with some kind of anti-cheat measure for this? Thankfully, we're pretty sure that the really dedicated collectors won't resort to such ... deceit.

It would've been interesting to be in the board room when the developers of The Eye of Judgment were giving their pitch to the Sony higher-ups. I can just imagine the crazed looks the developers got when they tried to explain their game was an augmented reality collectible card game using a peripheral that had previously been only used for party games. Everything about The Eye of Judgment's concept suggests that it shouldn't work -- it's way too esoteric, the barrier of entry is too high, and the technology behind it had never been tested before.Luckily for us, Sony has much more forethought than I have, since The Eye of Judgment turns out to be one of the most innovative games in years. It's a darn good CCG as well. Utilizing the just-released PS Eye to turn your cards into actual 3D models on the screen, The Eye of Judgment offers the best example of augmented reality in videogames yet. You place a card on the included cloth game mat and the camera identifies the card on the fly via a bar code type system, and a creature pops up on the screen. The game will keep track of all the gameplay elements for you, like how many cards you have in your library and your hand, what turn it is, and creature stats. The combination of holding real cards in your hands while also playing a video game is strangely thrilling, and not having to juggle all the rules and stats in your head is a nice change of pace from classic CCGs like Magic: The Gathering which have a rather ... complicated rule set.%Gallery-3195%

  • Special deal on Eye of Judgment cards at GAME

If you're a UK gamer ready to get your Eye of Judgment on, then you know that you're probably due for a lot of card collecting. This can generally be quite a bother, especially with the packs selling anywhere between £3 and £8, depending if you're getting a booster or starter pack, respectively. Well, perhaps we can help quell the notion you'll dole out a lot of cash -- UK retailer GAME is offering a special deal on their cards if you buy more when you pick up the game. The price will get sliced almost in half, rendering the fee for added card excellence down to £1.50 and £5. It's a pretty good deal, so if you plan on getting into the game, might as well score a few extra card packs while the gettin' is good.

The fanatical crew of card-and-video-game enthusiasts over at Joystiq have apparently had the unique pleasure of a hands-on with the newest and wackiest PS3 accessory, the PlayStation Eye and its bundled game Eye of Judgment. If you'll recall, the interactive, VGA camera is integrated with the Magic: The Gathering-like game, which uses real cards and a mat that the camera is aimed at. We understand the Joystiq team really put the game (and the Eye) through its paces in a 36-hour, pepperoni-pizza-filled, jolt-drinking marathon, which ended when one of the players' chaotic-neutral wizards cast "sleep" on everyone, but exhausted his remaining mana in the process. Browse on over to the Joystiq'ers pad and get all the nasty details.

We're still waiting for our Eye, but it looks like the cool kids at Joystiq have already had some quality time with their's. A few tidbits they've discovered: The cord for the camera is about 6.5 feet in length. Proper lighting is required for Eye of Judgment. The camera is an improvement over the PS2 EyeToy with: "smoother frame rate and slightly crisper on-screen image, as well as a nice auto-focus capability." Eye is not compatible with PS2 games and will not be recognized by the Xbox 360. A PC will detect the device, but appropriate drivers have not been released yet. The Eye hits retail stores October 23rd by itself for $40, or included with Eye of Judgment for $70. To read Joystiq's complete hands-on and check out their pics, click here.
