It's been a good eight-year run for one of Aion's longest fan sites, but that run is over now. AionSource, a fansite operated by Curse, is shutting down over the next few weeks, first going into read-only mode before being shut down altogether. The site's current administrator has set up a new site for the community members who would like to migrate. No reason has been stated for the shutdown; the site is not the only fan site that Curse has shut down in recent years, most likely due to a lack of cash flow. Users are encouraged to back up forum posts and the like before the shut down, while site administrators attempt to copy over some of the most useful community guides. Our best wishes to the community organizers attempting to keep the group together through the move. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

  • Fan documents visual changes between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2

As many Guild Wars players know, Guild Wars 2 takes place in the same world and often in the same areas -- just 250 years after its predecessor. Because of this, ArenaNet elected not to wipe the slate clean and start over with 100% new environments but instead to incorporate old locales and landmarks into its upcoming game. Guild Wars fan Claire became fascinated with this concept and has dedicated a new blog to documenting all of the visual changes in the world between the first and second game. It's called Project Tyria, and each post consists of several Guild Wars locales contrasted with screenshots of the same areas from the sequel. Claire writes, "I've always loved the graphics of the Guild Wars games and have grown to love the world of Tyria. We were there in the before times, and now we arrive again in the after." It's fascinating to see how ArenaNet has envisioned 250 years taking its toll on the monuments, cities, and vales of the original game; realizing the importance of keeping the world accurate for the hardcore fans seems to be a noted priority for the team. Head over to Project Tyria to see more on the comparison screenshots.

  • Star Wars Galaxies fan site hacked, 23K passwords stolen

Talk about kicking a game's community when it's down. VentureBeat reports that Star Wars Galaxies.net, a major SWG fan site, was hacked yesterday. Star Wars Galaxies.net is part of a LucasArts fan site network, and apparently was not being actively maintained, as the last update was in June of 2009. Still, over 21,000 email addresses and 23,000 passwords were stolen -- some of which could lead to identity theft, according to authorities. The hack was perpetrated by ObSec, a small group in the vein of LulzSec. The hackers posted the email addresses and passwords online for all to see. Analysis of the passwords found that 71% were relatively weak and easy to crack anyway. Some Star Wars Galaxies players may see this as an unfortunate echo of the much larger Sony hack that happened earlier this year. We at Massively urge any players who have used this fan site to make sure that they change their passwords elsewhere as well.

  • Cats invade Star Wars: The Old Republic in this week's Fan Friday

The community of Star Wars: The Old Republic did not quite make the Twitter and Facebook goals, so the developers decided to punish us by announcing another species that we will not be able to play. (Just kidding, it wasn't punishment.) In addition to spotlighting fan art and video, this week's Fan Friday column mentions Cathar as being another species players of SWTOR will bump into on their travels across the galaxy. The feline species from the planet bearing the same name was first mentioned by name in Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith, but gamers are probably more familiar with it from the other BioWare game, Knights of the Old Republic. Although the devs did not say where or how the players will run into this highly anticipated species, fans are hoping for a Cathar companion character. As mentioned above, the social media goal was not reached. Even so, the community team did give the fans some gifts. The Fan Site Kit has been updated with more digital goodies. New avatars, screenshots, and biographical images can now grace your SWTOR fan site. Not to mention, the team has included six new desktop wallpaper images straight from the exciting "Hope" trailer. Be sure to check out all of this and the amazing new fan art on the official SWTOR site.

  • Fallen Earth releases new fan assets

A number of our readers at Massively have been playing MMOs for years, but of course this means that some people out there have had their fill of the fantasy genre. There are more genres to be explored in the coming years, one of which should please fans of games like Fallout 3: post-apocalyptic MMOs. Perhaps chief amongst these upcoming titles is Fallen Earth, a Mad Max-like take on a post-apocalyptic setting... but populated with mutants and factions of zealots. Some gamers like the idea of playing in a very different kind of setting from what we've seen in MMOs thus far, and the Fallen Earth team's latest announcement is for those post-apocalyptic fans out there. They've put out a fansite pack, with all the art assets (new screenshots, wallpapers, textures and backdrops) you'd need to build your fan site. This will lead up to their Fallen Earth Official Fan Site Program, where approved sites will be eligible for "special site promotions and early access to Fallen Earth news and updates." If you find this appealing, you can grab the zipped assets (66mb) linked in the announcement over on the official Fallen Earth site.

  • PlanetTR has a crossword puzzle for you

Admit it, you're either a sudoku number cruncher or a cross wording puzzler. If not, why are these two brain busting games in every newspaper and news rack across the world. Why does every in-flight magazine have them filled in? Ya, that's what I thought. PlanetTR has created a contest that combines gathering information from inside Tabula Rasa with a crossword puzzle. Some of the in-game clues (which are scattered throughout the game world) require words spewed from NPCs, the name of an NPC, a logo, or counting the number of objects at a given spot. So it's like a scavenger hunt too! Everyone is eligible to play, and the event starts tonight (5 PM Pacific, 6 PM Mountain, 7 PM Central, 8 PM Eastern)! Winners will receive a collectible Tabula Rasa Beanie, and the first place winner will earn themselves a "special" TR prize. Be sure to check out the full list of details, and... get your cross verbiage on!

  • Craft the vote

It's no secret that there's a weakness in the crafting component of Richard Garriott's sci-fi epic, Tabula Rasa. The folks at Tabula Rasa Vault put that weakness to the test last week when it asked it's community members, "Do you craft?" A total of 330 votes were tallied and a whopping 215 of those votes responded with, "Maybe if they fix things." Ouch. This week TR Vault tosses out a follow up question: What change would you like to see MOST in crafting? They offer four possible answers, with a fifth allowing you to comment in their forum thread. The folks at NCsoft and Destination Games take this matter very seriously since they've announced this in their own Community News section. If you'd like to see changes in the crafting system, be sure to go and cast your vote!I have a handful of toons spread out across the middle teens, and crafting simply doesn't seem to be very useful. While it's fun to collect and break down equipment to see what you get out of them, the current system is a bit cumbersome, time-consuming and not very beneficial at low levels. Based on what I've read elsewhere crafting doesn't make a noticeable difference until the 30's. This isn't a deal breaker for me since I still love the fast-paced action and the "realistic" sense of a war that the game imparts. What are your thoughts? We want to know!

With the arrival of each new year everyone likes to wipe the slate clean and start anew. Ya, I know... that joke has been done to death, but I couldn't resist. With the new year Tabula Rasa Stratics is launching a brand new section to their website, as well as holding a very ambitious contest. "Heroes of the AFS" will be an area honoring the heroic soldiers who act as the last line of defense against the Bane. Each hero will have their own profile page containing key facts about their character (i.e., Name, Class, Server, Clan and a short bio of 100 words or less). Anyone can add a hero (simply by registering first). But for the contest itself players must write a story about their character (following the guidelines set by TR's "Soul of a Soldier" series). The story specifics are these: Entries must be written in character, and be in first person voice. Entries should include a suggested title. Entries must take place within the Tabula Rasa universe and spotlight the day to day life of an AFS soldier. You are encouraged to make references to actual in game locations, characters, story arcs, and in game events. Entries should be short. 200-300 words is ideal. Entries with more then 500 words can still be added to your profile, but will not be eligible for this contest. All entries are subject to screening and editing before being posted on the site. Entries must not violate the User Agreement regarding copyrighted materials, profanity, etc... Multiple entries ARE acceptable and will provide extra chances to win in the random drawing. Only one prize can be won by any individual however, so if you are selected for a prize you will not be eligible for a second prize. The contest started yesterday (Thursday, January 3) and runs runs through Saturday, January 19 - so if you're interested you best hurry over to TR Stratics "Heroes of the AFS" page and get the lowdown ASAP!
