I was torn this past winter. I knew the Galaxy S6 was imminent and that there'd likely be a model with a curved screen, but I was dying to see what it was like to live with its bigger precursor, the Galaxy Note Edge. Would I feel a twinge of regret when the shiny new Samsung handset arrived, even if the older phone still had some advantages? There was only one way to find out. I spent a few weeks with the Note Edge to see not just whether I would enjoy that uniquely shaped screen on its own terms, but whether it would still hold its own against the faster, curvier Galaxy S6 Edge.

  • IRL: Samsung's Galaxy Note Edge isn't great for lefties

I've been using my phone upside-down for the last two weeks. I didn't lose a bet, nor am I carrying out some weird social experiment. I'm doing it because I hold my phones left-handed, and that's the only way I can comfortably use the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. With a screen that wraps around the right side of the phone, the Edge is the only smartphone I've used where being a righty or lefty has had a direct impact on my purchase decision; to a lefty, it's uncomfortable and inconvenient to use, and you're better off sticking with its close relative, the Galaxy Note 4. Here's why.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note Edge launch delayed until December 12th in the UK

We've a bit of bad news for anyone who wanted to pick up Samsung's unusual Galaxy Note Edge next week. We knew something was up when the original pre-order date of November 14th rolled around and the curved curiosity was a no-show. A Samsung spokesperson has now confirmed to us that it's facing a two-week delay, meaning the retail release has been pushed back from November 28th to December 12th. The pre-order window has also been shortened to a week, so you won't be available to reserve it from either Samsung's site or Carphone Warehouse until December 5th.

Just because you can do something, should you? Samsung thinks so. Its second experimentally screened phone taps into its hardware R&D and production clout to offer something not many other companies can make, let alone bring to the public outside of a fuzzy proof of concept. And so, following the Galaxy Round, here's the Galaxy Edge. If you take the basic shape and concept, it's the spitting image of the curved-screen Youm prototype spied at CES a little less than two years ago. Now, though, it's a for-real smartphone you can buy. I've been testing it out in Japan, where it launched instead of the Note 4, although both the Note 4 and the Note Edge will eventually be available in the US. Fortunately, despite the unusual, (addictively stroke-able) curved screen, it still packs all of the good things that made the Note 4 such a strong choice. But bragging rights aside, is there enough of an argument for a curved screen? Should you just get the Note 4 anyway?

If you've been jonesing to get Samsung's one-of-a-kind Galaxy Note Edge in the US, you now have a date to mark on your calendar. The bent-screen Android smartphone will be available in the US starting November 14th, with the five biggest carriers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and US Cellular) all on tap either on the 14th or in the weeks afterward. You'll be paying an extravagant sum for that eye-catching display, however. Sprint is offering the Edge on a $35 per month payment plan ($840 total), while AT&T will sell it for $400 on contract, or an eye-watering $950 up front -- you'd better really, really like curved screens. Other carriers haven't divulged pricing just yet, but it's safe to say that they'll charge similar amounts. Who knew that the Galaxy Note 4 would seem like a bargain?

It's been over a year and a half since Samsung briefly (and from a distance) showed off the Youm, a prototype of a smartphone with a curved display that wrapped around the right-hand side. While it seemed like a far-off reality at the time, Samsung announced today that the Youm's spiritual successor -- aptly named the Galaxy Note Edge -- would be coming out this fall. Sure, mass-producing a phone with a bent screen is a tremendous display of manufacturing prowess, not to mention something to show off at parties, but is there more to this unique handset than eye candy?
