  • A bookmarklet ends Netflix's annoying horizontal web scrolling

Netflix on the web can be a tiresome experience, because the homepage's horizontal carousels show only a smattering of titles at once. To see more, you have to patiently hover your cursor over the arrow buttons on either side, which slide in new movies and TV shows at a glacial pace. Offering a perhaps temporary fix, developer Renan Cakirerk has created a free bookmarklet that automatically expands all of the titles in each listed category. Once it's activated, you can scroll vertically at your own pace and quickly find something to watch. There's a good chance Netflix will take notice and shut it down, but hopefully in the process it'll recognize the error of its ways and offer a similar option officially.

Saber Interactive invites you to go to Hades. That hellish welcome mat comes in the form of God Mode, a new third-person shooter for XBLA, PSN, and PC.The co-op game puts you in the Maze of Hades as the descendant of a former god, where you must shoot, navigate and try not to be driven crazy by the "wacky," foppish narrator. "The first thing we do is tell you how you died," said Saber CEO Matthew Karch, speaking to IGN. "We have come up with some pretty fun ideas for that and they definitely add some lightheartedness to the game."God Mode will be published in early 2013 by Atlus, of all people. Check out a trailer at IGN.

We all know what god-mode means from Doom, right? It pretty much meant that you could mow through all the monsters without blinking an eye, you had every weapon at your disposal, and you could not get hurt. What if we were to take this god-mode idea, move it away from game mechanics, and apply it toward character development in an RPG? To be honest, we would get the main character in most RPGs, right? Taking a look at the main character in my favorite BioWare game, Commander Shepard from Mass Effect 2, we find that she (yes, Shepard was a woman, and you can't tell me otherwise) is the best at what she does and is pretty close to flawless. Wouldn't you agree? She wins every battle, and the galaxy (as noted in the Mass Effect 3 trailer) is counting on her to save it from destruction. In literary terms, we call this a Mary Sue. It is a situation in which the author exemplifies himself in the main character of the story. These stories tend to be boring or ridiculous because the main character can do no wrong no matter how preposterous or illogical his decisions may be. If you read comic books, Wolverine (in my opinion) is a prime example of this. What happens if we take this concept and put it in a setting where there are thousands of people playing the same game or even competing in some cases? You get a bunch of gods competing for the same throne in a no-win situation. BioWare has said that our character in Star Wars: The Old Republic is not going to be just any Bounty Hunter (or Smuggler or Trooper) but the best Bounty Hunter. How is that going to impact the story and our interactions with other players from an in-character perspective? For a game that is "putting the RP back in the MMORPG," this is dangerous ground.

  • Forum post of the day: Try a twinkie

Seska of Ysondre has posed the challenge of twinking to players who hate this style of play. She stated that the joy of playing a twink is in planning how to get gear for the effort. To her twinking proves that gear is more important than skill. To do it right, twinking requires considerable time and effort (not to mention cash from higher level characters), but is a valuable experience. Seska is currently a level 16 Shaman, and plans to keep that character as a twink. She was met with agreement by some other twinks, but also a lot of resistance and resentment. Some people say that they have tried twinking and gotten bored with it soon afterward, like playing any other video game with cheat codes. This practice can also be frustrating for other players who would like to battleground as they level up but become demoralized by twinks.
