Welcome to Barely Related, a conversational Friday column that presents the non-gaming news stories that we, the Joystiq staff, have been talking about over the past week. And no, we're not stopping our focus on industry and gaming news. Think of this as your casual weekly recap of interesting (and mostly geeky) news, presented just in time to fill your brain with things to discuss at all of those weekend shindigs. • Aquaman joins Injustice: Gods Among Us

The Justice League of America's most under-appreciated superhero, Aquaman, has been confirmed as the latest addition to the cast of playable fighters for Injustice: Gods Among Us. Slightly reminiscent of Mortal Kombat's Rain, Aquaman's abilities appear to walk a fine line between trident strikes and water/lighting-based elemental attacks, as shown in the character's debut trailer at IGN.Injustice's version of Aquaman appears to be closer to the New 52 version of the character, rather than any of his legacy incarnations, due to the fact that he fights with a trident and still has both hands. This is unlike the longest running version of Aquaman from the 1990s, who lost his left hand in 1994 and subsequently battled with a hooked prosthetic harpoon spearhead attached to a mystical, retracting rope.Actually, now that we think about it, maybe that would have hit a little close to home.%Gallery-178886%

  • Report: Details and images of canned Justice League game pop up

    by
    Ben Gilbert

    04.03.2012

The Justice League and its members have shown up in a variety of different games on the current-gen consoles as well as PC, but we've yet to see a straight up Justice League video game for 360 and PS3. That doesn't mean that one was never in production, of course – former Double Helix art director and lead level artist Jon Gwyn reveals one such now canceled work-in-progress on his personal portfolio site, as discovered by Superannuation."The Justice League" was apparently a tie-in with George Miller's now-defunct Justice League film. The game project continued for another two years before being shut down as well. Few details about the game itself are available, but the images show a variety of superhero locales (Gotham, Metropolis) and Gwyn describes it as a "third-person brawler." A proposed versus mode was also included which put together a quartet of half good guys / half bad guys into an arena for a street fight.Despite the cancelation, Gwyn says that "the team was brought onto another superhero project" rather than being canned – that project appears to be the Green Lantern game from Double Helix that was released in June of last year. Additionally, despite project similarities, no assets from the Justice League project transferred to the Green Lantern one.Gwyn is currently working at Rockstar San Diego as a senior artist on a "confidential AAA title." Unfortunately, between the time it took to write this piece and ping Mr. Gwyn, he's password protected the images. If you'd like to share any information or assets regarding the Justice League game, don't hesitate to get in contact with us.

  • Turn your MacBook into the Justice League

We've written about MacBook decals in the past, but I couldn't resist showing this one to you guys and gals (especially the comic book fans out there). Stuff Off Decals is selling a Justice League sticker for MacBooks. The sticker is designed in the Justice League animated series fashion and features (from left to right) Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, The Flash, and Hawkgirl. Superman's "S" symbol lights up when you overlay the sticker on your MacBook's lid. The sticker is made of high quality vinyl and leaves no residue should you decide to remove it. At US$18, it's a little pricey, but for DC comic book lovers, this is a must have! Thanks to TUAW reader John for the tip! UPDATE: The creator of this decal (who had no idea I was going to write about it) just sent me an email. He is offering all TUAW readers 15% off the JLA decal as a thank you to TUAW readers for making his Iron Man decal a best seller after appearing on this site. Just enter "TUAW" on check out (will only work with Google checkout at this time, darn Paypal!) to get your 15% off! Sweet!

Big week, Nintendo fans! Looks like the winter glut of games has begun ... and so many of us already blew our gaming wads for the month on Wii preorders! Guess it's time to start making some sacrifices, since this week brings us a new Nintendogs as well as the latest published by Atlus, Contact. Grasshopper Manufacture's new offbeat RPG is our pick for the game of the week, though there's a good possibility that anything with the Nintendogs logo might just outsell the Bible, much less any games that dare to compete.DS: Contact Disney's American Dragon: Jake Long, Attack of the Dark Dragon Disney's Chicken Little: Ace in Action Justice League Heroes Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, The Lionel Trains: On Track Nintendogs: Dalmatian & Friends SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab GBA: Justice League Heroes: The Flash SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2 And for our counterparts in the UK, the exciting release this week is Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007, which hits shelves on the 20th. As always, availability is subject to manufacturer delivery.[Update 1: Changed category from Interviews, which this ain't, to news, which it is.][Via Joystiq]4 leaves take 5 4 good, 6 feet under. Somewhat like God and Lucifer, man and mosquitoes and my wife and I, DC Comics and Marvel have been locked in an age-old battle against each other. And over the past couple years, Marvel has had its time in the video game limelight, showcasing its best group of superheroes - The X-Men. But now it's DC Comic's time to fight back, and they are bringing Justice League Heroes.Up until now, all we've seen is character art of the game, but Gamespy has just posted nearly 10-new gameplay screens that show all your super heroes in top form. And judging by these screens, the game seems to be coming along rather nicely.Developed by Snowblind Studios, Justice League Heroes puts the player in control of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and Zatanna to try to stop the diabolical Braniac. And what will surely give the fanboys a wet dream, Heroes is chock full of extras like unlockable costumes and characters. You'll get your Justice League fix when the game releases Nov. 10.[Via Gamespy]
