Toshiba's to release four new Blu-ray players in 2012
We'll never get over how odd it seems that Toshiba makes Blu-ray players, but nonetheless they do and have four new ones for 2012. By the looks of them, they all fit the new Aero family design, feature streaming options like Netflix, VUDU and MediaShare (a DLNA interface). The main differentiator is that the BDX3300 and BDX5300 include built-in WiFi while the BDX2300 and BDX4300 are simply WiFi ready -- only the 4300 and 5300 output 3D. None of them have prices yet, according to the press release after the break, but they are all due in April, with the exception of the BDX330, which is due in May.
Verbatim's diminutive MediaShare Mini NAS: memory not included
Verbatim, whose business is memory (and whose name means "to reproduce word for word," by the way) has done a Rick Moranis job on its MediaShare NAS, resulting in the MediaShare Mini. One third the size of its predecessor, this guy retains its slight stature by going the Iomega iConnect route of eschewing on-board storage altogether for four USB ports (so it looks like you'll have to factor the four thumb drives into the purchase price). And like the full-size MediaShare NAS server, this bad boy supports remote access via HTTP, support for a number of handhelds (including the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, BlackBerry, Android, and Palm Pre), Facebook integration, DLNA-compliant media streaming, and more. Look for it now for an MSRP of $90.
HP issues software update for MediaSmart Server
It's been forever and a day since HP issued a MediaSmart Server update, but now -- at long last -- owners can suck down some more new software in order to implement a few minor changes. The HPMSS-1.3-R1 update adds in a Rollback feature, improves image processing performance in HP Photo Webshare, corrects error messages displayed using SSL and TZO certifications and removes unnecessary temperature sensor displays. Orb plays nice with DirecTV HR21 on video
Oh sure, DirecTV's Media Share has allowed Viiv-certified machines to network in for a good while now, but what if you just so happen to prefer Orb? The same streaming software that functions with the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 has been caught playing nice (read: transmitting media from a WiFi-enabled laptop) with an HR21 HD DVR. Judging by the looks of things, the setup procedure isn't all that different from syncing up a traditional Viiv machine, but feel free to peek a step-by-step video posted after the jump if you're looking to give it a go yourself.
