Armature Studio, the Austin-based developer formed from Retro Studios talent, was working with Capcom to create a new Mega Man X FPS, Polygon reports. Maverick Hunter would have kept X's weapon stealing ability and the platforming from the side-scrolling games, and added a deeper story and a new look, including armor by Adi Granov, who designed the armor for the Iron Man movie.Capcom canceled the project, like other recent Mega Man games including Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3, likely coinciding with the departure of series producer Keiji Inafune. Armature prototyped it in early 2010, Polygon's sources said. The site has five videos of the unreleased game, along with several gameplay details.Perhaps Mega Man didn't need this "gritty" reboot treatment, but on the other hand, it would have been a game, which is an increasingly rare thing to happen in that series.

After lots of high profile cancellations over the last few years, it looks like Capcom may finally be ready to breathe some life back into the Blue Bomber. Speaking at the World of Capcom panel at PAX East, Capcom community manager Brett Elston dropped some good news for mega fans. First and foremost, Capcom is developing a new game in the Mega Man series, but it's "not ready" to fully announce it just yet.Two more of the series' 8-bit classics are slated to hit the 3DS eShop in the next two months, with Mega Man 4 arriving April 25 and Mega Man 5 on May 16. Capcom will also be releasing a special light-up figure to commemorate Mega Man's 25th anniversary.Update: Capcom has clarified Elston's comments, saying that a new Mega Man game has not been confirmed. The company is having "ongoing discussions about Mega Man," but it "won't announce anything until something is ready."

It's been quite some time since we heard anything about Mega Man Online, which we first heard about in May 2010. Unfortunately for fans of the Blue Bomber, it looks as if we've now heard the last of it, as Korean website This Is Game has received confirmation from the game's developer, Neowiz, that the project was officially canned last November. The studio's representative stated, "Both companies have continually discussed to find agreeable points on quality, development time, communication and etc. Ultimately, both companies have agreed to stop the development of Rock Man [Mega Man's Japanese name] Online [early last] November." It's sad news for fans who were looking forward to going Maverick-hunting with some of their closest friends, but if the much-requested Mega Man Legends 3 can't even get through the pipeline, it shouldn't be too surprising that this didn't, either.

Joining Sega in the unlikely trend of video game-themed Japanese laptops, Capcom is looking to release a Mega Man special edition Ultrabook PC. And, like Capcom tends to do for Mega Man projects, it's polling fans to find the best design. As this inscrutable practice takes off, we feel the need to document it.A poll is up for the Ultrabook, with users allowed to vote once per day to select whether a generic "Rockman" design, tiled Dr. Wily and Robot Masters (the correct choice), overwrought NES box art-style Mega Man, or a pile of various Rolls will emblazon the laptop. So if you want to spend a few minutes voting on the look of a computer you very likely won't be able to buy, and probably shouldn't – sweet Mega Man art is not the recommended metric for choosing a computer – you're free to do so.

Street Fighter X Mega Man's superb chiptune soundtrack is now available on Bandcamp, complimenting yesterday's release of the game. Composed by San Francisco-based electronic music producer A_Rival, the 22-track album fuses Mega Man's sonic sensibilities with classic pieces of orchestration from Street Fighter's past. The soundtrack, which includes character themes and scores from the game's various menus, is being sold through Bandcamp's name-your-own-price model with a minimum price of $0.00. So, hypothetically, this could either be the cheapest or most expensive piece of music you've ever purchased. Regardless of which end of that spectrum you feel is most appropriate, at least do yourself the favor of downloading these sweet, chippy jams.

Mega Man fans know how to be patient when waiting for a new game, of course, so we know you'll be able to get it eventually. In other exciting Mega Man news, Capcom plans to release all six NES games on the 3DS Virtual Console in North America and Europe, starting with Mega Man on December 27, followed by Mega Man 2 on Feb. 7. • Mega Man creator's JJ Rockets hits Android in Japan, stars US president

JJ Rockets, a side-scrolling action game from Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, comes to Android in Japan today. More importantly, as Siliconera reports, it looks brilliantly bizarre.First off, you play as the President of the United States - probably not specifically the big O. Then you transform into what looks like a futuristic superhero version of Evel Knievel, all to save humanity from a swarm of evil mutants. Each stage has a three-minute time limit, with the stage only complete once the final boss is defeated. A promotional image from the Google Play listing suggests a diverse arsenal to choose from, while one screenshot shows a Batman-like 'Bwoom!' and 'Kaboom!!In summary: Mega Man platforming action, US super-president, time-limits, comic book stylings, and lots of fun-looking weapons. This is why we're interested. We reached out to Marvelous AQL, who are publishing JJ Rockets in Japan, but the company declined to provide any further comment. We do know, though, the game is also releasing on iOS at some point. As it is, we wouldn't be surprised by a Western release of another Marvelous-published Inafune game.

With dozens of games and collections, Mega Man has had quite the prolific run as a console game, and NeoWiz has been working on turning Mega Man into a MMORPG called Rockman Online (after the Japanese name for Mega Man). However, although there is no official word it appears that the project may have been shelved after internal restructuring in the company. Environments artist Kang Dong Hwa blogged that his current project was dropped and he is looking for other work. He also posted various concept art pieces that he'd been working on for Rockman Online over the years, usually a no-no for games currently under development.

Capcom is working on a new Mega Man game, in which all the Mega Man universes cross over! It's ... for iOS, and it's a social game. Rockman Xover is a game in which players create their own Rockman character, a "production model" robot, and gather "battle memory" to increase its abilities.Despite the RPG elements, screenshots show what looks very much like a traditional side-scrolling Mega Man game. Considering the virtual controls, we don't know how much of a good thing that is.

Sonic's ever-expanding circle of friends is about to get even bigger, as a teaser image reveals plans to have Sonic meet Mega Man ... at least, in the world of comics.USA Today comics reporter Brian Truitt tweeted the above teaser image, which he received from Archie Comics. In addition to its slate of digest-sized books about indecisive time-lost teens, Archie has published Sonic the Hedgehog comics since 1993 (allowing plenty of time to build a unique and insane Sonic universe), and it began publishing Mega Man comics last year.Having this historic meeting take place in the world of comic books rather than video games doesn't make it any less bizarre, and we can't wait to see what happens. Will Mega Man destroy Sonic and steal his speed?Update: According to USA Today, the crossover will take place in twelve installments across Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, and Sonic Universe series.

Mega Man turns 25 this year, and to celebrate Capcom is amassing the music from the series' 10 main games into a single collection, which will be available for ¥14,700 ($183.56) on September 19, provided you're fluent enough to traverse the exceedingly Japanese wilds of E-Capcom.Yes, sadly there have been no announcements regarding a North American release of the collection, which contains the NES and PlayStation soundtracks for Mega Man 1 through 6, as well as the jams from Mega Man 7, 8, 9 and 10, which don't have alternate versions. Here's hoping there's some kind of support structure for those discs inside of that E-Tank canister.
