  • How Resident Evil 2 helped Keiji Inafune become the indie dev he is today

Back in the mid-90s, now acclaimed Japanese developer Shinji Mikami was passionately toiling away on the first game in a soon-to-be hit franchise: Resident Evil. It was to be published by Capcom, but the company had reservations about the new intellectual property -- so much so that it nearly canned the project outright. Ex-Capcom global head of production Keiji Inafune recalled his side of the story during an impassioned GDC 2012 speech yesterday.Inafune claims he watched from the outside as Capcom's support for Resident Evil faded, and while he worked on other titles within the same company. Mikami fought for the fledgling game, eventually getting it published for Sony's PlayStation. The rest, of course, is zombie-ridden history. When Capcom began work on a sequel, Inafune says he got himself involved in a production role. "While Mikami focused on the game, as the producer, it was my mission to sell this title to as many people around the world," he said to a room full of attendees. But with the massive success of the first RE title, Inafune's role as salesman was relegated to a cake walk. "With my previous title Mega Man Legends, it was pretty challenging to even book a round of press appointments. No one was interested in hearing about a new Mega Man title," Inafune said. "However, the scenario was completely different with RE2. Once we announced the project, the requests poured in."

  • Street Fighter X Tekken's Pac-Man and Mega Man hit PS3s on March 13

As we learned a few months ago, the PS3 and Vita versions of Street Fighter X Tekken will include the two best/worst characters ever to grace a fighting game: Original Box-Art Mega Man, and Mecha-Mokujin Pac Man.These characters won't be available out of the box, however; both hilarious callbacks will be released as free DLC on March 13, one week from SFxT's North American release on March 6, according to Capcom Unity. We're alright with this, because it means we'll at least get one week of fighting regular characters online. As soon as Mega/Pac-Man are available, we don't expect to see anyone else, ever again.

Keep your cool, Mega Man fans -- as previously announced, that version of Mega Man X above still isn't a new character in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Nope, it's just Zero dressed up in a Mega Man costume, one of the new looks seen in the "Weapon Expert" costume pack available now. Elsewhere in the pack, Devil May Cry's Trish gets a new costume for her "Gloria" look, Hawkeye gets a makeover from the time he spent in the Marvel Universe as "Ronin," and Taskmaster also gets a new look, from Udon Entertainment's comic art. Interested players (or anyone who just wants to pretend Mega Man is playable) can grab the pack right now for 320 Microsoft Points, or $3.99 on PSN.

You might be wondering why Capcom decided to go with an outlandish, embarrassing caricature of the Mega Man 1 box art Mega Man as a Street Fighter X Tekken bonus character for PS3 and Vita. According to a tweet from producer Yoshinori Ono, the decision was made with input from Capcom executive emeritus Keiji Inafune."I consulted with Mr.Megaman (his name is Mr.I...) about it 1 year ago," Ono said. This iteration was the "result" of that consultation. A previous Mega Man game developed under Inafune's command, the cancelled Mega Man Universe, also featured "Bad Box Art Mega Man." So maybe Inafune just thinks it's really funny. Now, as for why Mega Man and Pac-Man are Sony-exclusive characters despite not having anything to do with Sony or the PlayStation platforms ... we aren't sure who was consulted on that decision.[Thanks, Alex!]

The 2.0 update for Super Mario Bros. Crossover, coming in Q1 2012, gives the homemade blend-em-up a bit more flash and a wider spectrum of nostalgia. And the new SNES and Gameboy visuals don't detract from the game's real purpose, which is to destroy that aloof minion Lakitu in new and interesting ways.

  • Rumor: Mega Man X iOS hides 25th anniversary logo

According to Universal Gamer (translated), there's something of a surprise hidden in the iOS version of Mega Man X. Specifically, the site has uncovered a logo for the Blue Bomber's 25th Anniversary. Of course, just what Capcom plans to do for Mega Man's anniversary remains to be seen, with Capcom's Christian Svensson promising in October only that "things" are being planned. We can only hope the company will do a better job than it did with Mega Man's 24th anniversary last year. You know, when it cancelled development on every known Mega Man project.

It might be shortsighted to buy UMD-based PSP games so close to the launch of the PlayStation Vita, but these new deals from Capcom may still tempt you, especially if you're budget-conscious enough to wait on the Vita anyway. The publisher has bundled some of its most popular PSP games into $14.99 "dual packs," one containing Mega Man Maverick Hunter X and Mega Man Powered Up, and another containing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and Freedom 2. You'll have to brave entering a GameStop for these, as they're exclusive to that retailer. Well, we suppose you could "brave" its website from the relative safety of your home, too.

  • Frank West can be Proto Man in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

There's a surprise lurking in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record that is most decidedly not undead -- Proto Man! You can unlock Proto Man's outfit, shield and a working arm cannon through a series of steps so strangely complex that we're shocked anyone figured this easter egg out at all. Apparently you can snag the boots no problem, but to get the shield and blaster you have to beat the game with an S rank, medal in all 30 challenges, defeat Jack in a game of poker at the safe house, and then start that file again (not a new game), htka of GameFAQs posted. Or you can just watch the above video and pretend you're controlling Proto Frank West Man. You can even make your own sound effects. We won't tell anyone. If you'll remember, there was a similar unlock in Dead Rising, but it was bluer.

We've all been there: The animation tells us that the Mega Buster is as charged as charged Mega Busters get, but that robotic abomination needs to die so much that we keep on chargin', sometimes for two or three whole minutes. It never works, mind you, but Dorkly knows what we're hoping for.

In addition to the Mega Man 9 and 10 DLC packs listed as discounted in this week's PSN update, you can also get ... Mega Man 9 and 10. And Mega Mans 1-3. Though they didn't show up on Sony's official list of updates, the entire Mega Man catalog on PS3 is on sale this week, half off. The PSOne Imports versions of Mega Man 1, 2, and 3 (based on the Japanese PlayStation re-releases) are now available for $2.99 each. Mega Man 9 and 10 sell for $4.99 each this week, with DLC bundles an extra $2.99. Given Capcom's recent attitude toward Mega Man, we'd love to see what happened if these discounts led to a massive sales boost.

We know the pre-Thanksgiving/Thanksgiving/Black Friday/Cyber Monday season is hard on wallets already thanks to a preponderance of unmissable deals, so we can only offer the following sincere words before dropping yet another set of deep discounts on you: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. It's true: we've become drunk from power, thanks to our ability to link to deals and make people buy things. Capcom has begun its Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale on its online store, offering discounts on not just games, but exclusive items like Mega Man Zero Collection t-shirts, Dead Rising 2 Bubble Budd toys, and ... Mega Man Kubricks and Be@rbricks?! Oh no, our diabolical plan has backfired. We're tempting ourselves. What kind of monster would do this to people?

  • Rumor: Marvel vs. Capcom 3 roster to include Mega Man, Frank West, and more

    by

    11.15.2010

A source shared what they claim to be the full roster for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, containing no fewer than 18 characters who have yet to be announced by Capcom, in addition to a new "War Machine" look for Iron Man. The list includes characters like the Red Arremer, Mega Man (in Battle Network and classic styles), and Frank West/Chuck Greene (probably as alternate versions of the same character) on the Capcom end, and Ultron, Squirrel Girl, and Thanos from Marvel. The most random character on the list is probably Victor Delacroix from 2003's Chaos Legion. Though, of course, all of this new information is unconfirmed, it's worth noting that She-Hulk and Zero, both appearing in the list from our source, were announced after we received it. In addition, some of the characters, like Frank West and Soki, are believable because they were featured in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (like Zero) and thus are probably relatively easy to update for MvC3. The Mega Man character is likely also similar to the Mega Man Legends-style version found in Tatsunoko. It's possible some of the new characters are even based on Tatsunoko movesets -- Delacroix makes more sense if he's taking the place of the sword-wielding Karas or Tekkaman Blade, for example. Hey, here's that new desktop background you desperately wanted, even if you didn't know it yet. It's a gargantuan spread featuring over 200 characters from video game franchises, new and old, redrawn in the style of Mega Man. • Japanese 3D Android phones pre-loaded with Capcom games

Not only is the 3DS no longer alone in the 3D, glasses-free handheld market -- it's not alone in having 3D, glasses-free, handheld Capcom games. The GALAPAGOS 003SH and 005SH, two new Android phones offered by Japan's Softbank mobile phone company, both have 3D screens, and Capcom has announced three games that will come pre-installed on the devices. 3D versions of the iPhone's Ghosts 'n Goblins: Gold Knights and Resident Evil: Degeneration are joined by a 3D-ified port of the first Mega Man. So it's not quite the same scale as Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition and the two Resident Evil games Capcom is producing for 3DS. [Image: iPhone version of Ghosts 'n Goblins]

I'm really happy to see that we're getting two new Mega Man games at long last. Mega Man Universe looks like it's going to be pretty awesome, even if it should really be taking cues from later installments, and Mega Man Legends 3 is a game that I've been waiting to see for... yeah, just about 10 years. Unfortunately, that does mean that I'm going to have to purchase another platform for the game, but that's all right by me. I already have a few dozen systems in my house; one more isn't going to hurt. But we're not here to talk about my pet causes -- we're here for the latest edition of Ask Massively. This week's questions were all about Chronicles of Spellborn and administrative details, so click on past the cut for our answers, and send your questions in to ask@massively.com! Or just leave them right here in the comments, makes no nevermind to us.

  • Mega Man Legends 3 invites fans to actively participate in game development

"It's been ten years since the last Mega Man Legends game," Inafune reminded the captive New York Comic Con audience, before unveiling a new teaser trailer for the upcoming Mega Man Legends 3 Project for Nintendo 3DS. Why the "Project" in the title? Inafune clarified that this "project" would be a collaborative experience -- but not in the Mega Man Universe kind of way. Instead, the community will be able to actively participate in the development of the game. The Capcom-Unity website will be updated with a "Dev Room," where fans will be able to submit their gameplay ideas, boss ideas, character ideas, and more. In the future, fans will be able to vie for a position in the game's voice cast. The first challenge for fans is to pick the next heroine in the Legends series. Nine different artists, including Inafune himself, are offering designs. The fan-driven vote will determine the female star of Legends 3. Keep an eye on the Dev Room for your chance to decide the future of the long-dormant Legends series. Update: Now with first video, after the break!%Gallery-104715%
