    For the longest time, it was weirdly difficult to play Solid Snake’s early outings on PC. The original Metal Gear was released for the MSX2 computer and then, a few years later, MS-DOS and Commodore 64. The first two Metal Gear Solid titles, meanwhile, were released on PC but never available through digital storefronts like Steam.

  • Report: Metal Gear fan remake featuring Hayter shut down

    A remake of the original Metal Gear - not Metal Gear Solid, for clarity - that reportedly featured David Hayter reprising his years-long role as Solid Snake has been shut down, according to Metal Gear Informer. The site reports that a producer on the game told them that "the guys over at Konami couldn't agree on a decision so [they] had no choice but to shut us down." Although fans of the 1987 MSX top-down stealth game won't get to relive Solid Snake's mission to take down Outer Heaven, they can still experience a sample of what the team had planned by checking out a recently-released trailer featuring David Hayter - or at least someone doing a spot-on impersonation of him.   • Metal Gear creator Kojima talks Snatcher, potential mobile adventures

    Though it's not likely that we'll see a Hideo Kojima game on mobile devices in the near future, it is a possibility that the Metal Gear Solid creator has put some thought into. In a interview broadcast via Twitch, Kojima sat down with Geoff Keighley to field questions from the public. When asked if he'd ever develop a game for the mobile platform, Kojima stated that he has no desire to create the short, replayable diversions that constitute most mobile games. Instead, he cites indie hit Papers, Please as a personal favorite and claims that he would eventually like to develop "a practical, easy to play adventure game that is quite deep." "[I have] no idea when I'll be able to do this, but I'll ask," Kojima added via translator. "[H]opefully someday in the future I will be able to develop one of those, but unfortunately, right now, my full time is devoted to The Phantom Pain." A later question centered on the future of Snatcher, Kojima's cult classic adventure game that, while highly regarded, has been overshadowed by Metal Gear Solid. While Kojima would like to see Snatcher return, he has no time to develop a sequel himself, but wouldn't be opposed to someone else reviving the sci fi epic. "If someone wants to adapt those games ... I would definitely support that person, I would help out that person, but I don't think there are too many people like that."

  • Metal Gear Rising PC owners report problems playing offline

    Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance made its Steam debut earlier today and players have already discovered a major flaw in the port, according to user reports on the Steam forums. "[W]henever I lauch [sic] the game while I'm connected to the internet, if my internet goes down (which is often because it's pretty bad) the game will just immediatly [sic] crash," writes Steam user "Howl," before asking other players to report any similar issues. The comments that follow are nearly unanimous: Losing your Internet connection while playing the PC version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance causes the game come to an abrupt end. Following this discovery a fan asked Platinum Games producer JP Kellams about the issue. Kellams seemed taken by surprise. "No idea. I'll ask first thing," he replied. While this is currently the biggest flaw in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, it isn't the game's only problem. Earlier we reported on an apparent region-lock issue preventing players from gifting the game to others living in certain parts of the world. We've attempted to reach Konami for more information on what the publisher is doing to fix this oversight, though we have yet to receive a response.

    It looks like exclusive Metal Gear Solid 5 content will be coming to Sony's platforms, assuming a side-long glance at a promotional poster tweeted by series creator Hideo Kojima is anything to go on. The image in question focuses on a new Metal Gear Solid 5 promotional poster. Next to the poster stands a cardboard plaque which contains words that are barely legible due to the size of the image in Kojima's original tweet. However, if you zoom in on the text, you're able to barely make out what the thing says: Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes Prologue to Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain Takes place in 1975 after Peacewalker and nine years before the phantom pain Multiple missions and central story and side-ops missions Exclusive content for PlayStation platform Spring 2014 Videogamer came up with roughly the same interpretation of the blurry text as we just did, though we invite you all to take a crack at it for yourselves, either by visiting Kojima's tweet, or going directly to a much larger version of the image. It is currently unknown what this PlayStation-exclusive content might be. We contacted Metal Gear publisher Konami for more information, but were met with a boilerplate "no comment."

Now, we don't really have room for this sort of stuff in our tiny, hopeless apartments, but we'd be lying if we said we haven't already priced out Ikea display cases for some of this loot. But for the folks out there with ample shelf space and a proclivity for placing plastic personnel on pedestals, take note: You want some Metal Gear?     This week's free PS Plus game is Zombie Tycoon 2, launching tomorrow as a PSN download on PS3 and PS Vita. Zombie Tycoon 2 is the sequel to Frima Studios' real-time strategy game pitting two mad scientists against one another, each with an army of zombies at his beck and call, as they try to invade the town of Finkleville.In addition to the free game, the usual discount trumpeting will take place tomorrow. Spring Fever concludes with arguably its best week yet, offering up discounts themed around PlayStation All-Stars ($20 for PS Plus members) and its featured combatants. Many notable series are on sale, including entries in Metal Gear, Sly Cooper, BioShock, LittleBigPlanet, Devil May Cry, God of War, Infamous, Ratchet & Clank and Twisted Metal.     Update: A press release confirms Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.Update 2: Contrary to what Kojima said during the GDC panel today, Konami has confirmed with Joystiq that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain are indeed separate games.As many suspected, The Phantom Pain is in fact a new Metal Gear game. It is Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, Kojima Productions head Hideo Kojima revealed during a GDC panel today. Kojima told the audience that Metal Gear Solid 5 is made up of both Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, and the influences of both could clearly be seen in the trailer.The game stars a Snake who has been in a coma for 9 years. Its opening section will be familiar to anyone who's seen the Phantom Pain trailer, as Snake wakes up in a hospital and must escape an unknown enemy. He's accompanied by a man with a bandaged face and a voice that sounds very much like Kiefer Sutherland. Naturally, it's pretty hard for Snake to stand up after 9 years of lying down, so most of his escape (and the GDC demonstration) is spent crawling on the floor.Hallucinations seem to play a role in the game, as Snake spies a woman with a resemblance to Psycho Mantis mystically floating up an empty elevator shaft. The hallway is then engulfed in flame, and Snake and his new friend are accosted by a huge, intimidating man ... who soon spontaneously combusts and disappears. Whether these scenes are real or merely hallucination isn't quite clear.The hospital section serves as a tutorial, after which the game proper begins. Today's demonstration was running on PC.The Phantom Pain was revealed during the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards, with many immediately speculating that it was related to Metal Gear.

    Hideo Kojima's transition from game designer to game producer is one steeped in compromise, the Metal Gear mogul explained during a recent interview with IGN. Specifically, Kojima would have preferred that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance star series mainstay cyborg ninja Gray Fox, rather than Raiden."It was my staff in Kojima Productions that insisted on Raiden, and I respected their idea," Kojima said. "In my personal opinion, I wanted to go for Frank Jaegar or Gray Fox. But if we had gone with that, I would have had to write the script and then be really committed to creating the game."In the end, passing the torch of crafting Metal Gear's universe to the next generation of developers was of greater importance than ensuring Gray Fox as the star. "I want to pass game development to the younger generation in my team, and have been trying to do so for quite some time. Before I never could give complete responsibilities for other games, but for Revengeance, they are fully in control. Besides, if I had created the game and directed it, it wouldn't have been this game."

  • Kojima would 'really like' to make a Metal Gear Rising sequel with Platinum

    Speaking during the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary panel at this year's PAX in Seattle, Konami kingpin and Metal Gear mogul Hideo Kojima gave a bit of insight into the future of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance as a series, as well as his continuing relationship with Platinum Games."First of all, I'm not a huge fan of spin-offs," Kojima said. "But as far as Rising is concerned, if it works out well, I'd really like to work with Platinum again to make a sequel."Kojima also said that he'd "really love to make" a game with The Boss as a main character, but that it would be part of the main series if it were to ever happen, rather than a spun-off title like Rising. Kojima couldn't comment on whether Platinum Games would be involved with that game's hypothetical production, only that he's "really loving working with Platinum."

    Legendary game director Hideo Kojima – pictured top left, fondling an imaginary person during a Kinect-focused TGS 2010 panel – is taking his show on the road to PAX Prime 2012.Kojima will participate in a discussion dedicated to the past, present, and future of the Metal Gear franchise at the big Seattle-based fan event, at 1pm PST on Saturday, September 1, with GTTV host Geoff Keighley acting as moderator. PAX Prime runs from August 31 until September 2."The one hour introspective will focus on the history of the award winning franchise in celebration of Metal Gear's 25th anniversary this year," Konami says. Questions for Kojima will be decided by vote, via an upcoming poll on the official Metal Gear Solid Facebook page.The only question worth asking is obvious, though: "Metal Gear?!"

  • ThreeA Toys unveils prototype Portal 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 statuettes

    Chinese design house/ridiculously detailed toy company ThreeA Toys had many different prototype products on display during its ReVenture event in Hong Kong this weekend, but the ones we're most interested in are the astonishingly accurate reproductions of Portal 2's Altus and P-Body and Metal Gear Solid 2's Metal Gear RAY.All three statues are prototypes and as such there's no information regarding availability, pricing, how articulated they might be or what they'll even look like once they've been painted. It's also difficult to tell whether this RAY model is the manned version created by the Marines, or the unmanned mass-produced model designed by the Patriots. Either way, we desperately want these things adorning our various fireplace mantels as soon as humanly possible.     The Metal Gear franchise has done remarkably well for itself since its introduction 25 years ago. Including every single Metal Gear release, from the original Metal Gear on the MSX2 through Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for the 360 and PS3, Hideo Kojima's groundbreaking masterclass in theatrics and stealth has amassed 31.1 million units sold, as of December 31, 2011.To put that in perspective via a completely arbitrary and meaningless number crunch, that's 3.8 Metal Gear games sold for every person living in New York City. Put another way, if you took every Metal Gear game ever sold and laid them all end to end, the resulting line of cartridges, discs and boxes would stretch all the way from San Francisco to somewhere else.

  • Nintendo to release Circle Pad Pro to US through Gamestop: February 7th for $20

    That extra analog stick and three shoulder buttons -- they make all the difference and net you additional street cred in the process. Following up on its Japanese release of the Circle Pad Pro over the weekend, Nintendo has stated that it will release the accessory to the US exclusively through Gamestop on February 7th with a retail price of $20. Though still relatively unknown in American gaming circles, the Circle Pad Pro is cited as running for 480 hours on one AAA battery, which is nothing to sneeze at. Nintendo has stated that upcoming games will need to be optimized for the device but suggest that it can bring tighter controls to titles such as Resident Evil: Revelations and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.     Having relaunched Metal Gear Rising as a full-on action game under the supervision of Platinum Games, Konami has taken the opportunity to freshen up its Metal Gear Solid series website. In addition to a bunch of media for each game, and, of course, purchase links, the new site offers an interactive timeline of highlights from the games, along with real-world events that are referenced in their labyrinthine, impenetrable plots. A quick warning: all the old Metal Gear Solid: Rising media is still on the site, now labeled with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance's title. If you're watching a trailer and there are watermelons or "Zan-Datsu" ... that's the old game.

    Konami's Metal Gear Solid: Rising is now Platinum Game's Metal Gear Rising: Reveangeance, just as we were lead to believe by the trailer that leaked earlier today. Raiden, apparently channeling his unstoppable child soldier roots, has gone fully cyborg ninja in order to hack, slash and grotesquely dismember every single thing that exists. We're not going to lie, the idea of taking a RAY model Metal Gear head on with a robotic lightning sword makes us tingle in very specific, covert places.

  • Kojima's 'Project Ogre' will be different, but not anytime soon

    There's an unusually high concentration of Metal Gear(?!) buzzing around the industry right now: Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is upscaling its way through living rooms the world over, while Metal Gear Solid Rising's production continues, once again under the watchful eye of series progenitor Hideo Kojima. Metal Gear Solid 5 is even closer to being a thing now, but what about Kojima's other other baby, Project Ogre? "I can't really say too much about that project yet, but it's a very subdued experience," Kojima said during an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine UK. "It's a little bit different to what I've done up until now. On the surface it will look similar, but once you get into it, it will be a different experience." Announcements like this always get our blood pumping. Metal Gear set in medieval times? Zone of the Ogres? Whatever Project Ogre is, we at least know that it's a long way off: "The Ogre project is going to take a lot of time, so I want to produce some other things on the side, like I'm doing with Rising." Oh! Dude. Policenaogres. Think about it, Kojima.

    Konami has announced a European release date for the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, an enhanced assembly of Hideo Kojima's playful, odd and utterly Byzantine stealth saga. (Well, most of it.) It'll be in shops for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 3, 2012. We've contacted Konami via uncompressed codec to confirm the HD collection's North American release date, which most retailers and rental outlets still list as November 8th, 2011. [Update: Konami has confirmed that date.] A Limited Edition packing a 450-page 250-page art book will also be available, as will this repeated reminder of what you're getting in the box: Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The Subsistence edition of MGS3 also includes Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. The nested novelty of playing an MSX game inside a PS3 port of a PS2 game sounds too good to resist!
