The sole Virtual Console release this week is a reminder of a very odd time: when Sega thought Alex Kidd was a viable character. The company took an in-progress Shinobi parody game called Shinobi Kid, and then added the Alex Kidd character. Someone at Sega was under the impression that a game would sell better with Alex Kidd in it. Also available: more Monkey Island, an expansion of one of Rubik's World's games, and Pallurikio, a cute platformer with a slingshot mechanic. And on DSiWare, it's ... a stripped-down version of Hell's Kitchen! Pallurikio (WiiWare, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points) Rubik's Puzzle Galaxy: RUSH (WiiWare, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points) Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 4 (WiiWare, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points) Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (Sega Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) PictureBook Games: The Royal Bluff (DSiWare, 1-4 players, 500 DSi Points) Hell's Kitchen Vs. (DSiWare, 1-2 players, 800 DSi Points)

Of course Nintendo of America didn't release Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth today. That would have been far too obvious. However, rather than disappointing us with this week's selections, Nintendo actually surprised us with a very welcome, seasonally appropriate Virtual Console classic! Knock on the post break and see what kind of downloadable candy Nintendo is shoving into our pillowcases. [Image credit]

We have a message to deliver to our European friends from the distant past: don't buy Protöthea. We had pretty much forgotten about this shooter, released soon after the North American launch of WiiWare, until Ubisoft inexplicably dusted it off for European release. There were much better shmups on the Wii a year ago, and there are only more now. Happily, there are also more arcade games now, like the wonderful Shinobi! Shinobi (Arcade, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) PictureBook Games: Pop-Up Pursuit (WiiWare, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points) Protöthea (WiiWare, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points) A Little Bit of... Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training (DSiWare, 1 player, 800 DSi Points) Combat of Giants: Dragons - Bronze Edition (DSiWare, 1-4 players, 800 DSi Points) %Gallery-22560%

  • NintendoWare Weekly: Picturebook Games, Revenge of Shinobi

Today's highlight is no doubt Revenge of Shinobi, the first Shinobi game on the Sega Genesis. What's funny about this is that the third game in the series on that console, Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, was released on the Wii way back in 2007. Two-thousand-and-freaking-seven, people! How crazy is that? More after the break.

  • OFLC ratings suggest VC release for Pilotwings, Super Mario Kart

The OFLC website is back after being hacked, with the Australian ratings organization taking the opportunity to redesign it. Luckily, it's still revealing unannounced games! The database has two new listings for classic Nintendo franchises that, really, should already be on the Virtual Console: Pilotwings and Super Mario Kart. We've actually booted up the Wii Shop more than once hoping to buy Super Mario Kart after forgetting that only the N64 game is available on Virtual Console, not the original. Also of interest: Picturebook Games: A Pop-Up Adventure!, which must be Nintendo's original WiiWare board game adventure, Asoberu Ehon Tobida-Sugoroku!, and You, Me, and the Cubes, which is clearly Kenji Eno's WiiWare puzzler Kimi to Boku to Rittai.[Via GoNintendo]
