Certainly not the first time we've seen the street art / graffiti culture get all entwined with our little high tech bubble, but it sounds like HDTV maker Proton got tired of making your average run of the mill smallish 1080p sets and LED backlit HDTVs, and decided to call a little more attention to themselves by enlisting a slew of artists to pimping their pieces. The event is called Intermix -- in conjunction with Freshness -- and Proton be showing the results of what happens when you give a bunch of artists an LCD HDTV canvas late this month in the Eslite Bookstore gallery in Taipei; no word on whether you can buy any of these things, but we hope that if you can they'll at least give the proceeds to a good cause.

Proton is showing off what seems to be the first production LED based LCD at Computex '06. They have plans to produce a 32 and 42-inch LCD in the third quarter of this year - and let us tell you, we can't wait to see 'em. These displays are impressive with the 42-inch have a 1080p resolution with a contrast ratio of 1,200:1. The little brother sports a resolution of 1,366x768 and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1. These are rather nice looking HDTVs but to be honest we are kind of afraid of what the price is going to be. Whenever we find out though, we will let you know.

We could've envisioned a more glamorous pair of displays to be the first LCD TVs with LED backlights to go into production (as far as we know). But for what the Proton TVs lack in style or brand name, they make up for with specs: the 42-incher has a 1080p resolution, 1,200:1 contrast ratio, 6.5ms response time and 500 nits brightness. The 32-incher doesn't fare as well, with a mere 1,366 x 768 resolution, 8ms response time, 1,000:1 contrast and 550 nits, but it's still hard to complain with those LEDs running the show. No word on price, but we should be seeing these around Q3 this year.[Via HD Beat]
