Craigslist provides another bit of strange, gaming-related news, this time with EDP Casting sending out a casting call for Punch-Out!! lookalikes. The post is looking for New York natives to fill the boxing gloves of Piston Honda, King Hippo, Great Tiger and, of course, Little Mac. The listing doesn't specify what the casting call is for but we'd like to dream the entire classic NES title would be put to music and run on Broadway -- with the help of Andrew Lloyd Webber, of course. If you think you've got the chops to jump into Mac's pink sweatsuit, make sure to take note that EDP is looking for someone with "real fire" in their eyes. So, you really have to want the part ... or at least undergo some experimental surgery. [Via GoNintendo]

Super Punch-Out!! (SNES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)We say: download it!Super Punch-Out!! is one of the great classics to grace the SNES. There's really no excuse one can provide for not having this (outside of not owning a Wii, being dead, or hating everything that is good and decent), so scrounge up eight bucks and enjoy. Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks.

click to enlarge Little Mac is definitely back, and he brought Doc Louis with him. He's also hauling a heck of a lot more pixels this time around, and we're happy to report that Punch-Out!! is indeed still fun to play. The Nintendo booth (the largest and lone major gaming publisher on the show floor) was showing off Punch-Out!! on a few stations, although sadly without the Balance Board functionality that's coming to the game.It did show off four of the thirteen total fighters, including Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, King Hippo, and the newcomer, Disco Kid. He looks like what you'd get if you crossed Mike Tyson with Ric Flair, and pulled him through a Disney movie animation wringer. He likes to primp, check himself out in a mirror, and pose for the crowd. Little Mac learned the lesson about the dangers of vanity long ago, so there's no such worry. Head after the break and start training, Punch-Out!! comes out on the Wii this May.%Gallery-33783%

This ain't your dad's Punch-Out! No, with Balance Board support, it'll be your mom's Punch-Out!The Italian Nintendo site leaked details on the various control schemes found in the upcoming Wii-make of Nintendo's classic boxing game. The first two modes are as-expected: play with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck to recreate the physical motion of boxing, or play with the Remote on its side to play it NES-style. The third mode documented takes advantage of the Wii Fit Balance Board, allowing players to dodge attacks by shifting their weight. Coupled with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, this mode should provide quite a workout.[Via IGN]%Gallery-33783%

This week, he talks about Nintendo of Europe's one-two punch of Punch-Out!! news and what it means to him. The opinions expressed here belong to the author and don't necessarily reflect those of Joystiq, Weblogs Inc. or its affiliates.I actually had to change this week's column at the last second. I had this whole other column planned, then Nintendo of Europe had to go and drop a big old bomb on us earlier today. A press release went out that is almost ready to burst at the seams with all of the Punch-Out!! info it contains. First of all, the game will support up to 2 players through Head-to-Head mode, which is pretty self-explanatory. Mac's trainer Doc Louis has been confirmed to make a return, along with a few fighters, including Glass Joe, King Hippo, Don Flaminco, and Von Kaiser, with a total of 13 opponents making their way into the game. We also know the game will feature three different circuits: Minor, Major, and World, presumably each with their own boxers to challenge. Source - NoE product page for Punch-Out!! • Nintendo of Europe stealth-announces Another Code R, Space Invaders Extreme Remix, dates Q2 titles

Nintendo of Europe released a massive list of Q2 releases for DS and Wii today. Of special interest on the Wii: New Play Control! Pikmin 2 is coming April 24, followed by Punch-Out!! in May and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat in June. Also of interest: as Kotaku points out, the MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort are nowhere to be seen, just like in the North American schedule. But what's different from the North American schedule is the inclusion of Another Code R, Cing's Wii sequel to the DS adventure game Trace Memory/Another Code. The cel-shaded adventure game, previously rumored for European release, is now scheduled to hit stores in June.On the DS side, the biggest news is Square Enix's Space Invaders Extreme Remix on June 5. This is most likely Space Invaders Extreme 2, which has yet to be officially announced for anywhere other than Japan! Walk With Me has also been delayed to June. June is going to be crazy!%Gallery-33420%

  • Touch Ruminations: Mixing the old with the new

In Touch Ruminations, former DS and Wii Fanboy Lead David Hinkle talks about whatever he feels like. He's a jerk like that. This week, it's all about boys, blobs, and little Macs, and how mixing the old with the new is a good thing. The opinions expressed here belong to the author and don't necessarily reflect those of Joystiq, Weblogs Inc. or its affiliates. This week has been an exciting one for Wii owners. First and foremost, A Boy and His Blob is making a comeback! On top of that, Nintendo informed us that old-school controls will be included in Punch-Out!! for Wii. It's a wonderful mixture of old and new, and shows us that there is an incredible well of older titles that can be tapped for today's market in this manner. Nintendo has been doing that with the Virtual Console, presenting older, dated games via a new, easy-to-use interface, bringing them to a new audience. It's a wonderful mixture of classic and new sensibilities, and something I would like to see more of. Of course, A Boy and His Blob and Punch-Out!! could both be horrible, horrible games for all I know, so take that as you will.

  • Punch-Out!! doesn't force motion control

    03.04.2009

Nintendo sent out just a bit of info about the upcoming Punch-Out!! that finally (partially) answers the biggest question we had about Next Level Games' delightful-looking refresh of the NES game: how do the controls work? Are we to use motions to simulate punching King Hippo in his gelatinous core, or will it hew more closely to the classic control scheme of the NES game? Both! Here's how the control schemes work, according to Nintendo's press site: "Punch-Out!! uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to simulate throwing punches. Use the Nunchuk to throw a left punch and the Wii Remote to throw a right punch." And for people who care too much to throw their hands in the air, "Fans of the NES version and core gamers will be excited to see Nintendo has also included the option to play Punch-Out!! using the classic layout from the original NES controller. Use the 1 and 2 buttons along with the cross pad to throw hooks and jabs or to dodge." Unsurprisingly, it sounds like the whole game will be closely modeled on the NES Punch-Out!! The press site describes the ability to earn "Star Punches" that, when used, take more health away from the opposing boxer. And trainer Doc Louis is back! Get out your pink sweatsuit!%Gallery-33381%

Nintendo just announced a May 18 release date for Punch-Out!!, giving Little Mac plenty of time to find a pair of diminutive gloves just his size before he waggles back into the ring this Summer. The game is among the more hotly-anticipated efforts in Nintendo's coming lineup, promising a return to form as everyone's favorite underdog throws down against the likes of Soda Popinski and King Hippo. According to sources, both are downing crates of Jolt and cheeseburgers on their road to get back into fighting shape.

Readying Soda Popinski for battle with everyone's favorite underdog, Little Mac, takes time, folks. Today though, It seems that Nintendo may be getting closer to releasing the next iteration in the now aging series, Punch-Out!!, with the ESRB having officially rated the game as "Everyone 10+."Though we've yet to get our hands into Nintendo's punching gloves and see if the game's any good, based on screenshots and the little video we've seen we can wholeheartedly say (tongue fully in cheek) OMG PUNCH-OUT KING HIPPO AHHHH!1!11! Considering that the game's set for a "first half 2009" release window in Europe and the U.S., it has to be coming soon, right?Sorry to say this 9-year-olds, but it's time to suck it up and be patient. You'll hit the double digits soon! In the meantime, we'll be over here playing NES Punch-Out!! on your Wii. Without you.[Via PureNintendo]%Gallery-33381%

It's no secret that 2009 is going to be full of awesome game experiences for us Wii owners. What we were wondering, though, is what the next big game on the horizon is for yourself? Are you pumped for titles due for release in Q1, such as MadWorld, Dead Rising, and The Conduit? Or, are you looking forward to something due a bit later, like Sin & Punishment 2 or Punch-Out!!?

Boxing manufacturer Everlast has revealed that it will be joining the burgeoning Wiimote/Nunchuk add-on market, starting with these $30 synthetic leather boxing gloves. Why? Because it's the end times, that's why.Still, The New York Times seems impressed. "The gloves give you some sense of being in the ring," lies the once-respected newspaper. Obviously, we don't have to tell Wii Fanboy readers that this is tat, but, y'know, inform your relatives/friends or something, before you find yourself wearing these Christmas morning.%Gallery-33381%[Via Go Nintendo]

Well, we would think, given that there are a bunch of really unique and fun-looking games coming down the pipe next year. MadWorld, Sin & Punishment 2, The Conduit, and Punch-Out!! are just a few of the games that the core are likely excited for. "I think that next year you're going to see the tide turn a little bit, in terms of people realizing that the Wii can have something of interest for everybody," said Cammie Dunaway in a MTV Multiplayer interview. "So, yeah, I think next year is going to be a pretty good year in terms of the breadth of offerings that are going to be out there for a bunch of folks."The full interview with Cammie hasn't been published yet, but we'll let you know when it does. Frankly, we're interested in hearing more from her on these games, because, well, we're as excited for them as you are![Via CVG]

  • Punch-Out!! developer making WiiWare card game as well

    11.03.2008

Next Level Games, the Canadian developer behind the Super Mario Strikers series, is currently at work on an extremely high-profile game: the Wii update to the classic Punch-Out!! series. According to an OFLC listing spotted by Spencer from Siliconera, they've decided to work on something else while they've got the Wii devkits out: something called Jungle Speed. Rather than a Donkey Kong-themed racing game (which has been tried on the Wii to little success), Jungle Speed is most likely a Wii version of a card game of the same name, in which players must get rid of all their cards while racing to take possession of a totem. We suspect that this title will end up on WiiWare: Jungle Speed also has a rating on the American ESRB, which lists its publisher as Playful Entertainment. Playful states on their website that they have "multiple, unannounced titles" planned for WiiWare. In bonus OFLC news, Mercs, Enduro Racer, and M.U.S.H.A. have also been rated! Awesome games from Sega consoles incoming![Via Siliconera]

There's a lot to be excited about from Nintendo's latest press conference. One of the things we've been extremely excited about is a new Punch-Out!! game. We can tell the game will include a couple of classic enemies, including King Hippo, Von Kaiser and Glass Joe. We were wondering, though, who you'd like to take on in the upcoming game.
