X3F TV -- XBLA in Brief: Inferno Pool, Rainbow Islands
Once again, a new week has brought two drastically different titles to Xbox Live Arcade. Inferno Pool allows gamers to play a fast, frenetic round of multiplayer pool (all in what appears to be a bar in Silent Hill). On the other side of the coin, we have Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure, which has players killing adorable enemies with rainbows. Both are available for 800 ($10) and you can see what they're all about in this week's XBLA in Brief. Enjoy. This Wednesday: Inferno Pool burns up XBLA with Rainbow Islands
This week's XBLA releases are ... well, they're games. The two downloadable titles sent to the fourth quarter slaughterhouse – a terrible place dominated by triple-A retail releases – are Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure! and Inferno Pool, both costing 800 ($10). We almost feel obligated to post The Charge of the Light Brigade after the break for each story about a downloadable game without a high profile beginning now until next year ... actually, next year isn't looking too open for downloadable games either, is it?
Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure ascends to XBLA next week
Taito has revealed that not only is the Xbox Live Arcade version of WiiWare's Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure! real, but it's coming out in Japan on October 28, which means it could be out worldwide at the same time. A Japanese press release contained a single screen (pictured above), confirming that the game looks pretty much just like the WiiWare version with bigger UI elements -- it's still kind of a mess, visually, and it still features those weirdly human-sized characters; instead of the adorably round Bub and Bob we grew up with. Towering Adventure also differs from the arcade classic by making the ascent up the game's tower a continuous pursuit, even during boss battles.[Thanks, sacra] Source (PDF link)
Rumor: Raystorm remake and Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure coming to XBLA
Taito's had a glut of classic-title remakes hit current-gen consoles as of late -- and if a recent rumor proves to be true, its streak shows no signs of stopping. NeoGAF user Shard recently posted some supposedly leaked images from the developer's next project -- an Xbox Live Arcade version of PS1 top-down shoot-em-up Raystorm (aptly titled Raystorm HD).Mr. Shard also supposedly dug up images of an XBLA version of Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure, a recent WiiWare release. That's great and all, but we're far more intrigued by the possibility of a renovated version of Taito's classic shooter, which features weaponized lightning. We've contacted Taito to see if they'll comment on the rumored screens. Stay tuned![Via GamerBytes]
VC Friday: Travel from Rainbow Islands to Fantasy Zone
If we really stretch, we can see a bit of a theme in this week's PAL downloadable releases. Both Fantasy Zone II and Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure are classic franchises known for being super-cute and brightly colored, and both titles feature locations (Islands, Zone) described by very cheery, but intangible, visions (rainbows, fantasies). We said it was a stretch. Okay, here's another, less tenuous connection: both series are totally great. There's also one of those Master of Illusion/Magic Made Fun tricks this week. Fantasy Zone II (Sega Master System, 1player, 500 Wii Points) Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure! (WiiWare, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) A Little Bit of ... Magic Made Fun: Deep Psyche (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) %Gallery-46292%
